Seems cool. How well does it work? Is this the kind of thing that you could use for commuting to alarm cars - like a substitute for a good loud horn? Let's face it, bells just don't cut it.

    • A. Definitely not even close to a loud horn, electric horn, or alert device. The only difference is rather than ringing the bell multiple times it will continually ring as the ringer is applied to the tire.

    • A. Such bells are really cool. A friend of mine had one 20 years ago and was envied by all kids. I got one for my boy today. If you can assemble the bell to the bike it will work fine for one or two rides, maybe. It is fun to get an endless ring while you ride, and it is pretty loud, too. The fasteners that came with the bell were stripped after I had installed the thing. The phillips head are too soft and the brackets are bending when you tighten the screws resulting in needing more tightening as the bell otherwise wiggles on the fork. The pull mechanism is the cheapest thing I have seen in a while and the lever not ergonimically positioned for a child. Unfortunately because of its lack of robustness and sturdiness the alignment of lever and bell will not stay in position and the bell stops working until you realign everything. If they had put a little bit more thought into the design and made it sturdier it would be a great product. This way, as it is, it will get returned tomorrow.

    • A. Best I can tell from the pic, the lever that attaches to you handlebars operates a cable which pulls the gerenator against your tire. You tire turns the generator wheel which then create a loud (probably mechanical) sound. Pros: the generator does not create drag on the wheel when not in use Cons: The metal attachments look cheap. It only works when wheel is spinning. Engaging and disengaging via cable seems cumbersome.

Cheap Bell not worth the money

I bough this bell through Walmart's website for my 6 year old boy. I had always wanted one of these bells but did not have the money when I was a kid. I picked the bell up at the store today and installed it. I should say and tried to install it. The fasteners, machine screws with a philips head are made form soft iron, which is obviously not hardened. The screwdriver I used damaged two of the heads and you can not apply enough torque to get a firm, tight grip of the clamp around the fork arm. There is another screw that positions the angle of the bell and the position of its wheel, which gets in contact with the tire. The metal bracket holding the bell is as soft as the screws and after you pull the bell 5 to 6 times its alignment has changed. The quality of the housing is not what it used to be 20 years ago as well, very cheaply made. I will return the bell as it is obvious it will not hold up to a boys bike rides.

The bell does not come with directions, so if you are not good at mechanical puzzles installation will take you a little time. The clamp for installation is very size selective, so make sure if you plan on attempting the install wrap it in electrical tape to protect your bike. The thumb trigger is slightly awkward to operate, but once the ringer is applied to the tire it is a continual ring. Not any louder than a regular bike bell though. The metals that make up the components is not a very strong composition, so don't force any movements without expecting failure.
