Gloria Swanson gives a career-defining performance as faded silent screen star Norma Desmond in Director Billy Wilder's dark and masterful film classic, "Sunset Boulevard". William Holden is Joe Gillis, the young, down-on-his-luck screenwriter whom Norma drafts to help provide her with a workable script for her planned "return" to the modern-day screen. Erich von Stroheim is Max von Mayerling, Norma's devoted servant, who harbors a few personal revelations of his own. Hollywood has never taken a more ominous, compelling or electrifying look at Hollywood than in this brilliant, Oscar(R)-winning tour de force that still mesmerizes with its witty, sardonic script, unforgettable cast, and provocative storyline.

I'd heard that this movie was a classic. I watched it and thought it was pretty good. It's just that many times so called classics aren't just totally extraordinary to me. The movie had an intriguing message about aging and defining oneself by one's career. Gloria Swanson's portrayal was very melodramatic but I guess it fits with the character she portrays. I wish the movie would have delved deeper into Norma Desmond's downward spiral instead of picking up when she was already off the deep end. Overall, it was a good movie but not the best I've ever seen.

I won't get into the details of the movie as you can find these plenty of places. Its a good story with good acting. Except, the exceptional portrayal by Gloria Swanson of Norma Desmond the former silent screen star as she descends into insanity. She's so compelling, you just have to watch her all the way to her final scene where she looks maniacally into the camera and says "Tell Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my closeup" Quite chilling.
