EPSON Pro 3880

On receiving my new 3880 I found that it was well packaged and easy to put together and setup. Instillation went smoothly. However I wasn't aware of the amount of ink it took to fully prime the system to the point where I called tech support to see if something was wrong. Joyce was great and spent all the time I needed walking me through the process. I was gobsmacked at the quality of the pictures I first printed. Everything about them are great. Color, gradient, detail, everything. However, I was not pleasantly surprised at the large amount of ink necessary changing from photo black to matte black so a word of warning, if you decide to purchase the 3880 plan you printing in batches I would suggest not swapping back and forth between gloss and matte as there is a large amount of ink wasted in purging the system going from one to the other. This is my only complaint. I don't understand why EPSON can't put a dedicated matte head and using a switch go from photo to matte without all the purging necessary.

The 3880 was easy to set up, but make sure you REALLY look for all of the tape locations, holding things together during shipment. The instructions list maybe half of them. So far, I've only used 8.5"x11" paper and about 33% of the time it's scewed and I have to reinsert it. This might be the way I'm placing the paper into the rear slot. The ink cartriges are ample. I've only printed B&W and haven't seen the ink levels change. The B&W prints are fabulous. I printed B&W test prints I downloaded from a few speciality sites and the grays, blacks and whites match their author's descriptions. I'm using Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster and Epson Exibition Fiber Paper with beautiful results. I have lager paper orderd and can't wait to make big prints. I bought the ColorMonki Display, but I'm exchanging it for the ColorMunki Photo Color Management to coordinate the printer to my monitor. Everyone who's seen the prints from this 3880 are truly impressed, as I am.

I have two R1800, one R2000 and now this. After printing several pics on 8x10 up to 17x25, the color is amazing and the resolution is impressive. The speed even with the settings maxed out for high defination prints is pretty darn good. Borderless up to 17x22 is great. Only wish it would do borderless up to 17x25. Ink usage is pretty good. I have printed about 30 17x25 pics plus about 40 13x19 pics and have not used as much as I anticipated. One thing about the colors is the blacks are really black. Many of the pics that I have done are from the Hubbel and the space scenes with the stars are fantastic. The R2000 was really good , but the varying dark levels in these pics are hard to get right and the Pro 3880 gets it right. The other colors also stand out in these pics and on several landscape scenes I printed, the colors are impressive. I have tried several brands of gloss and luster papers with success on all. Again IMPRESSIVE.

I have had the Epson 3880 for over a year and have found it to be an outstanding printer. I had an Epson 2200 for about twelve years before (two separate printers), and the 3880 has a much more accurate paper feed and finer color gradation in the prints. I use quite a lot of non-standard paper, uncoated art paper and custom sizes, and the 3880 has performed like a champ. I regularly print from Photoshop and InDesign and unlike the 2200, I have been able to register two-sided prints consistently for handmade books. This was the acid test for me. I also print award artwork on fine art paper that I then write on with calligraphy pens, so I very much appreciate the printer being able to take a variety of papers. I have high expectations, and this printer is the best I have used.

I have been an epson printer,Ink and paper user for 8 or 9 years. I started with a modest R320 and it served me well & it served me well until early 2012. i was without a printer until December 2012 & I decided to obtain the 3880. some super A 3 paper in ultra premium luster ( my usual paper ). well let me tell you the software is simple to operate. combined with lightroom 4.1 I have created large prints beyond anything I could have imagined. The color rendition and detail on my digital picture file is enhanced by the Epson printer. I am addicted I could print and reprint over and over again. Sheer joy is experienced to see how great a photo can be reproduced. at first I was concerned with the 6 month life of a cartridge. now i have no fear as I am sure to use up the ink well before the stated expiration date. I am at a loss for words other than simply expressing that the printer only makes my photography look better

Epson 3880

I have been using Epson printers for digital photgraphy since the Epson Sylus Pro 700 and Photo EX. Each succeeding generation has been a remarkable step up from the previous generation. I recently upgraded to the Epson 3880 and was amazed at the increase in quality from the prosumer line (2000P, 2200, 2400) of printers. The increase in clarity and color accuracy was astounding. Additionally the B&W capabilty directly out of the box was a real treat. There is no metemerism present under mutliple light sources, which was very apparent with the 2000P and 2200. It is even an improvement over the 2400. I also apprecaite the large size ink cartridges. They are more cost effective than the smaller sizes of the 13" printers. Additionally, the ability of this printer to print on heavier paper is superior to the earlier printers. The 3880 has a rear feed for single heavyweight papers and the take-up system works extremely well. I have had no feed failures so far with up t0 300gsm paper. The more I use the printer the more pleased I am with it. Thank you Epson!

The 3880 prints beautiful colors. It is ideal for paper media. That being said, I have spent a frustrating 12 hour day doing all I can think of to get a canvas print without success. My primary intention in buying this printer was to be able to print on canvas. The manual lists all of the media to be used with this machine which does not include canvas, however the manual is not available until the purchase is concluded. The specifications on the Epson website do not exclude canvas therefore it was assumed that canvas could be used. Yes, I am attempting to print on Epson Canvas, however every attempt results in an error message. Had I been aware of this lack of canvas capability, I would not have purchased this printer. The 4900 was a consideration, but it is a huge machine requiring space that I do not have and not having a roller feed was not a problem. I have seen on several forums that the 3800 prints on canvas and I was of the opinion that the 3800 was an upgrade. I have to conclude that my many months of research and consideration simply was not enough.

I've only had this printer for a few days so don't look for information on durability or longevity! I love what I've seen so far - the unit is compact, closes up to a sleek profile, is designed with a logical flow and seems like a good value. I have been using an older PS4000 and love the 3880 in comparison. It's not the fastest printer I've used but the output for photos is outstanding. I have used both matte and gloss papers, both BW and color output. All have been flawless. My only design beef with the 3880 is the inability to use roll paper. This is a small issue and one I knew fully going in so was not important enough to dissuade my purchase. For what it offers I would give the 3880 5 stars, but the option of a 3880 model with roller capability would be a great offering. Lastly, for a printer of this price, including even a 'cheap' protective dust cover for the unit would have been nice. I've just flipped over the plastic packing bag and use it, but it certainly isn't as impressive or professional a statement for Epson as it would be under a branded, fitted cover.

After over 40 years of working with film in large format (4x5/8x10) I have been banned from the wet darkroom due to health concerns. Moped around for a couple of weeks then sold my 4x5 equipment...was just gonna quit photography. Had a chance to play around with a high-end digital camera at my photography equipment pusher...I really liked it, bought it. Now, naturally, I have to have a printer so that I can maintain image control start to finish. Several of my aquaintances that have moved from large format to digital said (since I work primarily @ 16x20 prints) I should have a 3880; so I bought one of my very own about a month ago. It is a pleasure to use in every way: my b/w scans from 4x5 come out beautifully, I am captivated by the quality and brilliance of my (newly discovered) color work and I haven't had a single problem from opening the box to generating finished prints. I will say that my photoshop skills need work and that my "L" series Canon lenses like to work at about f11, but this is an exciting and productive learning time. Thank you Epson for helping this old timer keep working!
