I am 4 weeks into owning the Legion Y540 and so far I am really enjoying it. It arrived at my house in less than a week! The main reason I went with Lenovo (other than watching every YouTube video and reading every website about Lenovo Y series) was because my previous laptop was a 2009 ThinkPad and it served me very well. The only thing that went bad on it was the battery but I still hung on to it until someone threw a pencil at the screen and it broke. That is when I decided it was time to upgrade. As an engineering student I decided to get a gaming laptop because the specs would allow me to run any program that I might need in the future (or so I told my parents), I also wanted a laptop that would last me a long time, and being as expensive as it was it better do so.
The laptop looks very nice with a sleek modern design, and the screen makes a nice clear picture (very life like). Near the touch pad it is a soft-touch plastic that shows a lot of smudges and finger prints. The keyboard is very nice to type on, however, it does take a little bit of getting use to. Likewise, the touch pad works well but also takes a little bit of getting use to. I am not a fan of the plastic clicker buttons on the bottom of the touch pad though. But in general, Lenovo did an amazing job on the design.
The main reason that I will be using this laptop is for school. However, I am only 4 weeks into owning it and school is not in session yet. Therefore, I mostly use it for browsing and I occasionally play CS-GO which is not a super large game. This brings me to the obvious flaws that this laptop has. The laptop runs the game beautifully, but the fans are pretty loud and the laptop does get hot (not uncomfortably hot though so I am assuming that all gaming laptops do this). The worst thing that most people will find with this laptop is the battery life. As stated in many reviews accost the internet, it is terrible (lasts only 3 to 4 hours depending on use). I knew that the battery was going to be bad when I bought it so it does not bother me at all, but do keep in mind that you will need to carry the charger with you. Also keep in mind that the charger is not small. The AC adapter is pretty large.
Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. I hope this laptop will last me at least 5 or 6 years, I did buy a warranty, but only time will tell. Most of what I wrote are negative reviews towards this laptop, but anything that I did not cover in my review means that I have no problem with it and am very happy with it. I am just pointing out the aspects of this machine that are hard to see unless you own it yourself. I would fully recommend this product. It is a great bang for your buck! Have a nice day and good luck shopping. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
