Bought this less than 1 week ago on 1/28/19. Good picture. Good sound. Put in a clean like-new blu-ray disc and unit went to a screen with only the background. After 60 seconds (literally) it went to a blank screen. No response to the remote. No response to the front panel buttons. Waited 5 minutes, same status. Unplugged/removed power for 10 seconds.Reconnected power. Unit did the non-nonsensical boot up then powered off. I powered it on and then it read the blu-ray.
This should not happen. It is brand new. I do not like the fact that you cannot operated the drawer if you are connected to a streaming service. I don't want to interupt what I am watching just to retrieve the disc. This was the same as the older model that I replaced this one with. The old one would lock up too, but not when it was brand new.
I can live with these issues, but I should not have to. I bought the warrantee, through a major retailer that covers everything except theft. I did not buy this unit to keep me busy shipping it to them every time it has a problem. I doubt Sony will respond with anything substantial. It is shame, I used to really back them.
When the unit doesn't glitch, it works great, the sound and picture are vastly improved from previous models, and that is why it still gets a 3 star rating. It is just a shame that there weren't any fixes, for what is being reported, by myself and others. Usability tests by real users over 7-14 days might have bought out the inconvenience of not being able to retrieve the disk while connected to an internet service or even just putting in a disk and automatically going to disc play mode. I did not buy this to "control me". It should do what I want within reasonable parameters for its intended use, when I want it to, without inconveniencing me.
I am not recommending this or any other blu ray player built by Sony. I have tolerated them hoping for quality change in an upward direction, but have been misled by my own product/manu loyalty.
