I have not sewn since high school home economics and have always wanted to but never started because I thought threading the needle and bobbin seemed like they could be intimidating at my age now. With this sewing machine, winding and loading the bobbin was so easy and even though I haven't mastered the automatic needle threader, threading the needle manually is easy as well. The quick start quick start guide and the instructions manual are very helpful. Very quickly able to trouble shoot what I'm doing wrong and fix the error. If you are a beginner such as myself, I recommend going to a thrift store and purchasing some clothing to re-purpose and practice on. Try different combinations of fabrics and switch to the appropriate needles. Just play around with it until you get the feel of how much pressure to apply for speed you are comfortable with. I hope to create many Simplicity outfits over the next few months and then move up to Burda patterns. Happy Sewing!

Singer is no longer the same dependable company it was many years ago. This machine is a piece of junk! The "SwiftSmart Threading System with automatic needle threader" is VERY hard to use; the manual's instructions look clear, until you try to follow them! The diagrams are actually incorrect! I worked for a whole day with the machine, trying to make it work right; setting the tension according to directions did not work properly either. Nor did the "OneTouch Stitch Selection" work properly. I guess you get what you pay for; don't expect a good machine at this price. Certainly don't depend on an electronic machine at a low price; you might have better luck with a mechanical-type machine. I am an experienced sewer [over 50 years], having used my mother's 1929 Singer, which STILL works fine! And my Viking Huskystar 224 works well also. So I "owned this product less than a week" and "never" use it, because it went right back to Walmart, which fortunately has a reasonable return policy.

I learned to sew on my grandmothers Singer sewing machine but was given a Sears Brand Sewing Machine that I have used all of my adult life. I wanted more stitch options and like the computerized stitch features on this model and loved the wide base and large sewing platform. I wasn't sure that I liked this machine when I got it, it was louder than my old machine and the light was not as bright. Since I sew a lot at night time when my kids are sleeping this worried me but I have gotten used to the noise and mostly used to the dimmer light. The machine does over stitch sometimes after I have released the pedal, it is just a little slower to react that my old machine. The self threading feature is nice I guess for those that are unable to thread the needle by hand, but it takes too many steps for me. It's quicker just to thread it myself and the bobbin feature doesn't really make a difference for me either. But if you want a wider base and different stitching patterns this is a great machine if you get a deal on the price!

No, it is far superior! I have heard that said about Singer for years. I decided to give one a try as a Bernina, Necchi and Janome were out of my price range. Singer "wowed" me with this sewing machine. As a seasoned seamstress and master quilter, having years of sewing experience, I wasn't expecting much. I am just so pleasantly surprised! This machine is not noisy, well, mine is not. It is heavy enough to not move while sewing (a problem I had with Janome). Yet, it is not so heavy that I am able to transport it with ease. The instructions far surpassed any I have encountered, in that all stitches come with pictures and examples of application. No guess work in what to use each one for. The needle threader is so well constructed that it is fool proof, although I do advise keeping your instructions close by when you first use it. No, it does not come with a hundred stitches, but it has all you need! It is a handsome, smooth, well running machine at an incredibly affordable price. I highly advise for all levels of sewing skills. If you can afford $$$$ for a Bernina and the name is more important to you, go for it. I can't say enough good about this machine. Happy sewing!!!

  • A. The work surface can be removed (along with the tool drawer) for "free-arm". As to an extension? Probably someone has made an acrylic table that will fit around it by now. Since I use the entire dining room table, I haven't found the need for a larger work surface (it's much larger than my older machine).

  • A. Yes it does have a free arm capability. Not sure on ordering a larger work surface, I'm sure you could check online maybe on the Singer website or Google.

  • A. First off - note that this is a larger work surface then most machine offered here at Walmart. It is 14" x 7" before the 'curves'. The work table does come off for free-arm work. There are many after-market tables out there that could be configured for this machine. You will have to work with the supplier of the table to confirm if it would fit on this machine.
