I love this but was a little dismayed when my large thread spool just flew off the stand, so I got an idea while sipping on a straw: I cut a clean drinking straw to about a 3" length and put it on the spool aperature and slipped the thread spool over it, and lo and behold, now I can use ALL my threads without worrying that the thread spool will shoot across the room again! The straw slips off and stores inside the lid when I take the case with me. As for bobbins, I have used different types of bobbins before, although currently I have two Brother machines that use the "L" style bobbins. I used to have an old Singer Touch and sew with the Futura bobbins and those style bobbins would probably not work in this winder as it is made for the bobbins with a center hole that is larger than 3 toothpicks together but smaller than a standard pencil. If I recall correctly, those bobbins from the 70's had no center hole. I use this daily with a straw!

This is the best thing since sliced bread. Yes you do have to keep an eye on it but I had the same problem with the thread getting wrapped around the bobbin holder on my sewing machine so this isn't a big deal for me. Plus it doesn't happen often. You have to make sure your thread is wrapped correctly on the bobbin and there is a slight tension on the thread and the bobbin will fill with no problems. I love the fact that I don't have to stop in the middle of my sewing project and refill the bobbin on my machine. What a time saver. Plus if you have a large project coming up you can fill all your bobbins at one time with all the thread colors you will be needing and you can do it anywhere since it has batteries and adapter cord. Love this product.!

After reading some of the other reviews I wasn't expecting too much but thought I would check it out. I'm so glad I did and wish I had one of these years ago when I first started sewing. I just got it and took it out of the box to try one bobbin to see how hard it was. It was so quick and easy that I ended up filling 26 bobbins. Here are a few suggestions that will help with the issues others have mentioned: 1. Make sure to pull the spool holder all the way up so it will be tall enough to hold the spools in place. If you don't they will jump off when it starts spinning. 2. There is no speed control and this machine is FAST so you have to be able to watch the bobbin wind to catch any problems quickly because it is done in a few seconds. Set it where you can get eye level with it - you can't tell what's going on by looking down on it. 3. It can tend to wind unevenly sometimes but is easily controllable if you keep your finger by the bobbin while it is winding and nudge the winding thread up or down when needed. 4. Before putting your bobbin on the machine, pull the thread through the little hole on top of it. Then push it onto the machine. While holding onto the thread, turn the bobbin about 5 times in the direction of the arrow on the machine to get the thread tight on the bobbin. Now pull the bobbin sensor forward and push the power button. 5. There is no off button. To stop - push the bobbin sensor back. It will also stop automatically when the bobbin is full. The directions that come with the machine are very brief so I hope what I have added will help those of you that purchase this. It is very inexpensive and I can't imagine that a more costly product would do a better job if used properly. I definately recommend this helpful little machine.

I use my sewing machine mainly for mending. The bobbin wind on my machine is no longer functional, and the cost of repair a bit steep for an old machine. A friend suggested the SideWinder; knowing that I would not need to use the bobbin winding frequently. My friend does sew a great deal. For herself, she purchased a higher priced, but more substantially made winder. I have used the SideWinder. It is simple to use and filled the bobbins quickly. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase.

I disagree with an earlier review. I have two Brother sewing machines, and both use plastic bobbins, and this product works great with them.

  • A. I have a brother sewing machine also & this works fine for winding my bobbins with NO adapting. My brother sewing machine is about 4 years old & uses clear platic bobbins. I have had no problems with winding my bobbins & they work fine when I sew.

  • A. I have a Brothers also and this Bobbin winder works like a charm! It will not however wind plastic bobbins only metal. It is a great product and time saver, you will be amazed at how much time you will save with extra bobbins on hand when you need them!

  • A. The SideWinder box lists only two brands of sewing machines bobbins with which it is incompatible. Brother is not one of those. So it should work for you. I think you will like it.

  • A. Yes, it will definitely work for loading bobbins for a Brother, at least for the VX780, anyway. I have a Brother VX780. That is what I bought the winder for, and it works fine with the Brother bobbins.
