This was a good preque...

This was a good prequel to the Witchlands series. I enjoyed all the history and it helps readers to understand the magic system a lot better. I also liked how everything was laid out in here with pictures and journal entries. The story is good, but very short. We hear from three POVs throughout. The book is half from a couple years before the Witchlands series starts and half from 1000 years before that. The portion of the book from the recent past alternates between Tanzi (Ryber's best friend) and Ryber's POV. The other half of the book occurs in the far past (1000 years ago) and is told from Eridysi Gochienka's POV. The two different settings (near past and far past) alternate throughout the book. Overall it's a good story and provides some nice background on the history of this world and how magic works. I would recommend to fans of the series. I wouldn't really recommend as a stand alone; there just wasn't enough story here to allow this to stand alone well.

Sightwitch is a novell...

Sightwitch is a novella in The Witchlands by Susan Dennard. It is the back story for Ryber Fortiza, a side character from the main series. The story is told as a series of journal entries primarily by Ryber, with the occasional entry by her threadsister Tanzi and historical entries by the famous Sightwitch Sister Eridysi Gochienka. I find this style of storytelling hit or miss and this one ended up working for me better than I expected. One of the neat things is all the art included as part of the journal. I'm very glad I read this as a physical copy as the drawings may have been shrunk too small on my Kindle. I enjoyed the story. Ryber's portion focuses on her life in the Sitewitch Sisters Convent about a year before the start of the main series and her original meeting with Kullen. It explains nicely what it means to be a Sightwitch and is a decent, if short, adventure story. More interesting were the historical flashbacks provided by Eridysi's journal entries. These added another layer to the world building of the Witchlands that I found fascinating. I wish there had been more of them. Without going into too many details for fear of spoilers, I'm excited to see how this will tie back to the main series with Bloodwitch.

Sightwitch is the preq...

Sightwitch is the prequel to all that takes place in The Witchlands series books one and two and it is also is supposed to serve as a set up for the upcoming series installment of Bloodwitch. The characters in this story, Ryber Fortiza and Kullen Ikray, are minor characters in The Witchlands series so far, but they are memorable characters. Kullen is the threadbrother to Merick and is his second in command in the series with Ryber having her own role. Although, this story is really about Ryber and the role that she thought she was destined for. Ryber's journey of self-discovery was not an easy one and I really appreciated that there was explanation of the sightwitchs and the history that they represented. The story is told in present tense through Ryber's and her threadsister, Tanzi's, voice with past transitions from the voice of Eridysi Gochienka, a sightwitch who shared something in common with Ryber, only Ryber had to discover what that was for herself. This story is told in an epistolary format through journal entries and drawings from the different characters. I loved that and did not know that it was going to be in this format, which I found most enjoyable. I also liked Ryber's voice, she was a strong character who was fierce in her determination to find her threadsister despite her own fears and doubts. Sightwitch was a quick read and definitely had me going back to the other books in this series in order see what I may have missed about Ryber and Kullen. They are definitely going to have a larger role in book to come and I find that I am looking forward to it.

This novella was interesting and added some great lore to the Witchlands world, but it felt too long, and dragged a bit. I'm interested to see how Rybar is integrated into the larger story!
