Shakespeare and Goethe were literary gods to Hector Berlioz, and like other romantic composers, he was obsessed with Goethe's FAUST. The French composer's setting of Goethe's drama stands as one of his finest compositions. The work contains all the elements that makes Berlioz's music so compelling. There is a superb sense of drama throughout, and Berlioz's music is ideally suited to each character. Berlioz was a superb orchestrator: 'La Damnation de Faust' features a number of orchestral set pieces that are justly famous.
This recording is taken from a live 1962 performance led by one of the greatest interpreters of French music, Pierre Monteux. Monteux also had a cast of young, fresh-voiced singers that included Andrᅢᄅ Turp as Faust, Michel Roux as Mᅢᄅphistophᅢᄅlᅢᄄs, and the superb Rᅢᄅgine Crespin as Marguerite. Crespin all but steals the show with her brilliantly vocalized arias in the work's third part. Monteux and the London Symphony make the most of the famous orchestral passages, playing with delicacy and gossamer string tone in the "Dance of the Sylphs." This is simply the finest recording of the work available.
