Sex And The City Soundtrack
You've seen the TV show. You've caught the movie. Now you just have to buy the soundtrack. If you thought the movie was ultra chic, you know the music probably had more than a little to do with it. There's a blend of originals and covers here that serve the Sex And The City spirit perfectly -- but even if you took away the SATC brand, this would still be a formidable stand-alone album. It's thematic but has variety, combines established stars with relative newcomers, and mixes romantic numbers with party starters.
Wondergirl Fergie warms up the groove with "Labels Or Love," a pop-rap mix that's light and fun and very danceworthy. It bumps and flows and sets the overall tone perfectly. Her album-mates don't let her down. Take India.Arie and "The Heart Of The Matter" -- it's the perfect romantic soul-pop ballad (with just a dash of gospel in the backing vocals).
A delightful "quirk" of the disc is the appearance of two Bee Gees' songs covered by different artists: "How Deep Is Your Love" by The Bird & The Bee and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" by Al Green and featuring Joss Stone. The former, from the Bee Gees' famous disco era, was always a gentle ballad, but here it is positively ethereal. Meanwhile, "Broken Heart" is one of the trio's older standards (from 1971) and it gets the silky smooth Al Green treatment. Embellished with light strings and Stone's delicate fills and harmonies, it's as pretty as a song gets.
Jennifer Hudson pops in for a stylishly retro-disco number called "All Dressed In Love." Hudson has amazing vocal power and hits some incredible high notes. Stunning stuff. Also worthy of note is "New York Girls" by Morningwood, with its '80s pop-rock stylings, and "All This Beauty" by The Weepies, which sounds like the child of the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" and the bright-and-light work of Sixpence None The Richer.
Here's a soundtrack album with plenty of musicality, lashings of romance, the occasional flexing of rock muscle, and melodies that will get you singing. This one will definitely make you feel good. It's time to head to the city!
