    Great for what it is!

I read all the positive and negative reviews before I purchased this paddle. I was a bit worried, especially when I read about the reviewer's teenage daughter who broke the paddle her first time out. On the other hand, I didn't want to drop $40-70 for a new paddle I would only use a few times before winter. As an experienced kayaker, I suspect those who broke this paddle were doing something wrong. First of all, because the paddle breaks down to 5 sections, there are 6 plastic compression-type screw fittings. These fittings HAVE to remain tight for the paddle to maintain its integrity. This means checking them before launching and checking them every 30-60 minutes on the water. Also, whether it says adjustable or not, the 3 pieces of shaft MUST butt together inside the sleeves. DO NOT try to make the paddle longer by sliding the shaft sections away from each other in the sleeves. This will GREATLY increase your chance of breaking the paddle. Finally, you have to maintain proper form(i.e. Pull the boat through the water, not try to push the water behind the boat) and try to avoid hitting stumps, logs, etc. I would highly reccomend this to someone who wants to try kayaking w/o spending a fortune or someone who needs a semi-temporary paddle and/or spare paddle. By the way, I am a 6'3" 190lb male.

    Good Value

Assembly was quick and easy. You must be certain to set the pieces ALL the way into the plastic connectors and make sure you tighten the nuts carefully, but fully. It would be nice if there were index notches for the blades that would allow you to match them or make them perpendicular (depending on your paddling preference). You have to fiddle with them to get them to match or offset, but it is not a really big deal. Otherwise, they work well, are sturdy and seem to be durable without being bulky or heavy.

it's cheap, both in price and quality

I guess I shouldn't have expected much for the price. First, make sure you get it right. I almost had it fall apart on me while paddling. Second, it rubs on the hands while using it because the joints are designed to be joints, not hand grips. Third, something about the blade shape makes it very in efficient. This is a functional paddle, but it's not a fun to use paddle. It got me on the water, which is great, but I'll be in the market for a new paddle soon.

    Not made for a MAN

I purchased two of these oars one for me and one for my wife. Hers did fine and is still holding strong but mine snapped leaving me stranded in the middle of the lake. so if your a man thinking of buying this item think again just throw in that extra money and go get something not made of plastic

    Great price, great paddle.

I'm new to kayaking so I didn't want to spend a lot on paddles. These worked great for easy paddling. I'm sure you would need something stronger for whitewater. Easy to assemble and break down. Very happy with these paddles.
