I bought this trickle charger to keep my riding mower charged and also my wife's CR-V which doesn't get a lot of exercise since we home school and she only goes out on short trips. The battery just wasn't getting fully charged. I hooked up this charger and overnight the battery was fully charged; the same with the riding mower. When the charger is first attached the bottom indicator light turns yellow to indicate it is charging. By morning it was green indicating the battery was fully charged. This is NOT a quick charge unit, but a trickle charge. I like to leave it attached overnight and my AM... it's done. It can also be left attached. It uses I think it says 15W and the built in sensor moderates the units standby so you can have peace of mind attaching it and leaving it on as long as you want. On a side note, it is less than half price of others I found online. It is very small and light so it working as well as it does is very surprising. This thing is great and I highly recommend.

Phenominal little charger

The Schumacher XM1-5 is a phenomenal value when used for it's intended purpose of charging small lead-acid batteries, up to lawn tractor or motorcycle batteries. It also works great as a float charger or maintainer for larger car or marine/deep cycle batteries. The charger is idiot-proof, automatically selecting 6 or 12V mode, and has protection against accidental reverse hookup and short circuits. It will also flag faulty batteries that won't take a charge. In addition to normal alligator clamps, it also includes a lead with ring terminals, which can be permanently attached to the battery and easily connected via a quick connector. Using this connector, the XM1-5 makes a great, inexpensive alternative to a Battery Tender for a motorcycle, lawn tractor, RV or other seasonally used vehicles. I use mine primarily to recharge Power Wheels batteries, a task it is supremely well suited to. By cannibalizing the ring terminal lead, it can be wired up to a Power Wheels battery connector. In this role it is world's better than the stock "dumb" charger that comes with Power Wheels.

Does not overcharge the troublesome Miata gel cell battery, and seems to maintain its charge for a long period of time. Other brands of battery maintainers have ruined many of my Miata batteries, at high cost to the management.

Bought this Schumacher XM1-5 Battery Maintainer as a cheap alternative to the big name product, (Battery Tender Jr). 2/3 the price. Was pleased to find it easy to use and that it had the plug lead included, the one that permanently wires to the battery. My use is as a trickle charger/ maintainer for my motorcycle when not riding. Ever price a motorcycle battery? Also using it to maintain my riding mower battery with the battery clip attachment, also included. Highly Recommend for anybody needing this type of automatic charger - trickle charger / battery maintainer.

I had considered the purchase of a "Battery Tender" brand maintainer for quite some time. I found this unit at my local store, and read the previous reviews after returning home. At roughly half the price, I decided to give it a try, and haven't regretted it. The pigtails make using it easy, and my motorcycle is always ready to go when I am. Just unplug and go! Anyone who owns a motorcycle, boat, tractor, collector vehicle, etc. should have one. I only wish I had gotten it years ago.

  • A. Electric scooters (all) use two 12 volt batteries, in series, for an end result of 24 volts. The Schumacher XM1-5, will only charge one 12 volt battery at a time. For a replacement charger, to charge both batteries at the same time, look into a Soneil (makes most OEM) 24volt chargers. Secondly, the biggest problem with electric scooter battery maintenance is, the owners fail to provide a sufficient charging time to accomplish a full charge. To charge 2x 35aH batteries takes about 14 to 16 hour charging time, on a typical 24v, 4aH charger/maintainer. The typical overnight (8 hour) hook up, leaves the batteries undercharged, and sulfating results, causing shorter battery life. --- Using a single 1.5aH charger on a single 35aH battery will probably take about 15 hours, for a full charge. Best results: Mount your charger (24v, 4aH) in the basket or somewhere on the scooter, and whenever parked or your not using your scooter, plug it in at every opportunity. The more you can keep your batteries at a high state of charge, the longer they will last, typically will double the life of the battery. Although the Schumacher XM1-5 is an excellent automatic single 12 volt battery charger/maintainer, it is not suited to your 24 volt nor higher amp hour battery scooter needs. Only way to use in your situation, is to unplug and charge each battery separately.

  • A. No, it will not by itself. Your Rascal Scooter has two 12v Batteries wired in series for 24v total. You would have to connect 2 chargers one for each battery. Plus it would take a couple days to charge the u1 batteries due to their size. Not cost effective compared to the other 24v chargers with xlr plug you can find on ebay from $25 and up.

1. How long are all connection cables for Schumacher XM1-5 Maintainer, 1.5-Amp? 2. Does this unite gets warm or hot when in operation? Thank you for your help. Yuri
by toynaper 4/6/2013

  • A. The free user manual is available for download, on the Schumacher.com site for detailed answers, should you wish. Cables and Accessories: The Schumacher XM1-5 uses a standard plug connector, same used by: Battery Tender, Black & Decker, Hopkins, KeyLine Chargers, MotoBat, Extreme Max, CES, and NOCO. Accessories, (splitters, extensions, eye-lets, clamps, ETC) are simple, straightforward and reasonably priced and available. Operating temperature: Although the bottom of the charger can get warm under heavy load, I would not consider it to run hot, but to keep on the safe side, I set mine on a 4x6 inch ceramic tile (for wall or floor), from Home Depot, for peace of mind.

Will it take like a month or a couple of days?
by roland 1/16/2014

  • A. Charge your battery at 10% of its capacity, on an automatic charger for 12-15 hours. Example: a 100aH battery, charged at 10 amps. Can be lower aH charge, but will take longer. Afterwards, hook up this battery maintainer float charger, and it will automatically maintain the battery at full charge, for as long as it remains connected. Always store an unused battery, or battery installed, connected to a float (not trickle) charger for longer battery life.

  • A. Various reviews of the 27DC-6 say it's either a 109 or 115 ampere-hour battery. 115 ampere-hours / 1.5 ampere peak output = 76 hours just by the math- YMMV

  • A. It is not made for charging large batteries such as marine deep cycle batteries. Do not make the mistake I made when I did not read the whole manual. It says, "if you use the battery charger to charge a large battery, such as a marine deep cycle battery, that was not fully charged, you may lose some of the battery’s capacity. This would cause the large battery to be unable to hold a charge and become useless." Now I need to buy a new marine battery. Works great on my car battery though.
