Overall, this Blu-Ray player works as expected. Set up with an HDMI cable was painless and playback of Blu-Ray and DVD movies is flawless. I haven't experienced any of the new BD interactive features, so can not comment. Two slightly frustrating items: Samsung does not provide programming codes for my Vizio TV, so I can control the TV from the BD remote. Also, the player does not have a resume feature after powering off. This means if you stop the movie and shut off the player, when you turn the player back on, you have to go back through the previews and menus and select the scene you were at. My last three standard DVD players had that feature and I miss it, especially with kids around.

Great Blu-ray player

We found this player at are local Wal-Mart Supercenter# 1976. We have been looking at Blu-ray since it won the format war in the time between late 2007 to early 2008. Why, because of its clarity of both picture and sound. In that time since, we have first read and learned about player profiles, then learned quality and experience mater as well. For Blu-ray video there are three profiles: 1) BD Video or profile 1.0 Grace Period – Profile 1.0 means each player has 64k of internal memory; used to keep track of ware you are in a disk. In true 1.0 profile players there would be no option for local storage like a USB device or flash card port. Although, in many 1.0 profile players these ports are present and may allow you to upgrade the profile or firmware as needed. The following things are optional in profile 1.0 players and must be present in 1.1 profile players but many [not all] 1.0 profile players have these options. Picture in picture [PIP], this supports popup menus seen in profile 1.1 discs. Advanced audio or secondary audio decoders that support HD sound like 6.1 or 7.1 surround or true HD sound or richer sound from 5.1 systems. A “virtual file system” for better access to disk content. Additionally, there is NO internet connectivity; however, there might be an Ethernet or network port anyway. The manual usually says “for update only” when describing the Ethernet or network port. Meaning it is not integrated by the players programming for use during movies or other disc content yet. 2) Bonus View Final Standard - Profile 1.1 means the same as 1.0 profile; however, the following are now mandatory. Local storage capability such as more internal memory or external storage like USB or flash drive ports, the minimum local storage capacity is 256 MB; to store data from the user or updates for the player or for content for the player like photos from a camera card for a slide show. Picture in picture [PIP]; to view the movie and other content at the same time like popup menus. Advanced audio or secondary audio decoders that support HD sound like 6.1 or 7.1 surround or true HD sound or richer sound from 5.1 systems. A virtual file system for better access to disk content is. Optional, but present in better players, is an Ethernet port or network port for easer updates to the player programming and future internet connectivity. 3) BD-Live - Profile 2.0 is the same as bonus view 1.1 final standard with these changes a minimum of 1 GB local storage via internal memory, a USB drive or a flash card inserted in the port and now mandatory is the network connection [wired or wireless] AKA an Ethernet or network port or warless access point. For player updates to programming, content updates to a disc or special features from the web, for a disc. We saw four players at Wal-mart from Sony, Samsung, Magnavox and the PS3, also a Sony product, and did try the Magnavox first. At a lower price, the Magnavox seemed to be a profile 1.1 player; because it has all the optional items needed for profile 1.1 players. It only lacked an Ethernet or network port to make it a possible 2.0 player. Meaning that even without the network port, it could update to a true 1.1 profile player with an update from the manufacturer, via a flash card like an SD card and we would have been happy with that. However, there was no update available as yet to make it a true 1.1 profile player. Nor did it display or up-convert to 1080p full HD well on are full HD 1080p set. However, it did down-covert and display well at 720p but still had trouble switching from a Blu-ray DVD to a regular DVD and back again. It kept showing white bars and changing resolution to between 720p and 480i. That is why we exchanged it for the Samsung BD-P1500 player. It is from that experience we learned lower price dose not always mean better value, even from a respected name. We learned that the profile is important. At first we did not think so. It is not like regular DVD’s ware you put them in and play the movie. There is interactivity between you, the player and the disc content you do not have with regular DVD disc. If you use HDMI cables for best viewing results, you can add possible interaction between your TV and or home theater and the player via the HDMI cables. Profile 1.1 AKA “final standard” or “bonus view” will handle this interaction well in a quality player. We chose the Samsung BD-P1500, a product new to Wal-mart, but Samsung has been with Bu-ray almost from the start. That means that Samsung is established in Blu-ray technology and they have more experience than any new entrants would. Also we chose it because it was a true profile 1.1 already and had the hardware to become BD-live - profile 2.0, the term on the display was “BD-live ready” and add to that better set compatibility via Samsungs “AnyNet” feature and are new choice was not hard. All that is needed for BD-live” is an update from Samsung, and some kind of local storage like a USB flash drive or thumb drive, to act as an internet cache and file storage to view web content or get downloads along with a connection to the internet. In fact research has shown me that at least Sony has similar programming that allows best operation with same brand TV sets and same brand Blu-ray players. So keep that in mind for a best match. Setup was simple. I already had the HDMI cable [needed for720p or full HD 1080p resolution] and an optical audio cable to connect to my existing home theater [both sold separately]. I connected the HDMI cable to both the back of the player and the TV. Next, I connected the optical audio cable to both the home theater and the Blu-ray player. Lastly, 1 connected power to the player and turned everything on. Pressing the ‘TV input Sel’ button on the remote brought me directly to the Blu-ray screen. Using the manual I just selected the language of the player and setup the type of audio my home theater needed and setup was pretty much done. Performance is excellent it up-converts to 1080p and stays there. For a standard DVD from the store or that you rent, it plays most any newer recorded disk CD or photo disk but not all photo disk types. It plays audio CD’s from the store or burned on the computer The unit may not play certain CD-RW/CD-R and DVD-R due to the disc type or recording conditions for example if the disc is not finalized during the burn process. This unit dose better than most though. Playback of a Blu-ray title is excellent. The menus and other 1.1 profile content do display well and the movie is uninterrupted.

I recently purchased the Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray player. Upon setting the player up I was unable to view a movie. The player would start the movie then "freeze up". Upon doing this, the player wouldn't respond to any buttons pushed (menu, play etc.). I returned this player and replaced it with an identical unit. The second unit was set up and I was able to view a movie. When I attempted to view another movie I received an error statement stating that the disc inserted could not be viewed (or something to that affect). I attempted both Blu-ray and DVD disks. After contacting Samsung customer service I was advised that I would have to return the player for repair as it was unable to read any type of disk. Long story short, in a matter of four hours I received two Samsung Blu-ray players that malfunctioned straight out of the box. I have been impressed with most of Samsung's products. However, I'd think long and hard about purchasing another Samsung Blu-ray player.

I returned my Sony BDP-S350 for the Samsung BD-1500 and I could not have made a better choice! The Sony's sound quality was lacking(Had to turn my home theater system all the way up to hear it with optic input). This system has the most bang for the buck. It works perfectly with my Samsung TV (HPT4254X) and Samsung sound system (HT-TZ515T). The picture is what I would call standard among all Blu-Ray players (Which is incredible since Samsung was not one of the original makers of Blu-Ray). The menu is easy, but slight changes could be made to improve it. But thats the same with any Samsung product. The sound is extremely pure. I could not ask for better. There's not much more I could tell you about the system. Everything works as planned and performs exceptionally. This system has made improvements where other systems lacked. As I've stated before in previous reviews, I would only recommend you use Samsung products with other Samsung products. These pieces are made to function together as one. If you're going to buy one, buy all. Its completely worth it!

I purchased this blu-ray player after a long and exhaustive search during the black friday sale. I couldn't wait to get it home and try out my new toy. When I got home, I took it out of the box plugged it in, connected my hdmi hookup, and powered it on. When the home screen appeared, I pressed the open button on the player and it opened up....halfway. Then it closed by itself. Hmm, I thought. I pressed the open button again, and waited. And waited...and waited...nothing. Then the home screen on the tv turned pink, and the picture went black. "No connection" was the message I got, as if I had unplugged my cable. I tried and tried to get this thing working and the tray would never open back up and the message screen on the player itself was also frozen. All it would do was turn off and on. That's it. Frustrated, I took it back to the store and purchased the Sony 350 Blu-ray player- the one that retails for ($298) ($198 the day of the sale) and due to the sale, and a local competitor's add I purchased the Sony player for $179. Took it home, no problem whatsoever. I suppose maybe I originally bought a Dud...? Maybe so, but I won't be buying a samsung player ever again. I'll stick to Sony.

BD-Live 2.0...What/How/Where???

Excellent player, yes it loads Sloooooow, but as an earlier review said, it's worth it. Amazon has the screaming deal right now (buy 4 Blu-Ray DVD's from a select list and get $100 off, so net cost including the BD's was $174 with free shipping). Hooked it up to my wireless router and was able to download the latest firmware upgrade effortlessly through the set-up menu. Currently using 1080i resolution with my 720p 50" Panasonic plasma...seems fine; great picture, audio, etc. Kudo's to the manual for easily explaining the different settings and what they mean so that I can select the best for my configuration. So now I'm all intrigued about the BD-Live 2.0 but can't find any information anywhere as to what exactly it is and how I utilize/access. Says I need at least a 1GB thumb drive but that's about it. Any info would be appreciated.

Purchased this Samsung from another retailer (not Walmart). The unit played fine for 3 days, then when I tried loading a DVD into the unit, I end up getting a white, snowy screen, alternating with a black screen, after the Samsung logo shows up before loading the DVD. The unit was connected to a 720p LCD set via an HDMI cable. It worked still using the RCA cables, but only at 480p. On HDMI, I get the white screen despite trying several different DVD's. The white-screen problems started happening after I downloaded the latest upgrade from Samsung's website, via the ethernet port in the back and my Road Runner modem. Also, if you have burned movies on DVD+R, the Samsung won't play them. I ended up returning the Samsung to the retailer I bought it from, then went to Walmart and bought a Magnavox Blu-ray, which I'm happy with so far.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He likes to keep up with the technology. I'm an electronics neanderthal. But he got online and researched Blu-Ray players, and then "discreetly" left his top pick information lying next to my 'puter, so I got the hint. It was reasonably priced and very well thought of by reviewers, so I ordered it. He then went out and got a copy of the new Batman movie to watch on it. I admit I don't know squat about all this stuff, nor am I a Batman fan, but the experience was just like being in a movie theater! He's got a big Samsung LCDTV on a wall in the media room with surround sound and it was impressive. He was very happy, and so I am too! We obviously haven't had this device for long, but based on our experiences so far I would absolutely recommend the Samsung Bluray player.

Given the price of the BD-P1500, some may find it okay to use for a full year without any issues. As was the case for me. No issues what so ever, so you rate it 5 star after a couple of months in use. Turns out that new movies, like Public Enemy, comes with a code on them and you have no choice, but to update the firmware. In trying to do so my player goes to all the steps and freezes up as the last step every time. This lady in customer service told me that they will mail me a CD and that will be my only choice. I sense that her CD will freeze, just like mine did as the firmware was downloaded from the net. If that is the last course of action for a customer, then another brand that will last more 1year & 1/2 must be considered.

Overall, the player has been very good. The ethernet adapter is a great feature for keeping the player up to date with firmware updates. It looks great and does look obtrusive to any kind of set up. Great sleek design. The only problem I've had so far is with playing Iron Man. At first I thought it was a problem with the firmware, but I've found out that all that needs to be done is have a USB hooked up in the back when it is hooked up to the internet. The main disc would not play as it was looking for Blu-Ray Live information, which is only accessible with at least a 1 GB USB drive in the player. No problems with it not connected to the Internet, though. If you're not wanting to get a PS3, then this will definitely be a top choice for blu-ray player.
