There's only one big compartment on the inside, big enough for a large laptop and a notebook or two before it's too unmanageable. There's tiny little slots for pens and pencils, but if you don't like using those or are used to using a small zipped area in any other bag, get a pencil pouch.
The colored area on the front is a little pouch, but you can't put much there without it being bulky or making the bag hard to carry. The straps aren't padded or anything, so if you have an old heavy laptop, I kinda suggest you use a laptop backpack or a big bookbag because you can probably get scoliosis or shoulder pain easily carrying something so heavy without much "support" on your shoulders like that.
Overall, it's good for the price, especially because the more expensive, fancy, leathery laptop messenger bags can't hold much, and sometimes you need more space than you need style and comfort unless you use two bookbags altogether (which is counterintuitive :( ).
