Rockin' The Rhein With The Grateful Dead (3CD) (Remaster)

Too many new bands and styles of music to keep up with? Or are you all caught up on new releases, and simply feel the need to look back in time? Sometimes there's nothing like the good old Grateful Dead and this three-disc set recorded in 1972 showcases the doo-dah band at the height of their awesome '70s-power.

This is the full revue-style lineup of the Dead: Jerry Garcia (lead guitar, vocals), Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, vocals), Phil Lesh (bass, vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Donna Godchaux (vocals), Keith Godchaux (piano) and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (organ, harmonica, percussion and vocals).

Celebrating their first tour outside the States, the set starts with the classic, "Truckin'," the group's well-worn road anthem, heavy with Pigpen's organ-sound. Pigpen's contributions figure heavily throughout, from his traditional bluesy "Chinatown Shuffle," to the psychedelic ragtime of "Mr. Charlie."

Weir's rambling "Black-Throated Wind" is the prelude to "China Cat Sunflower," the first song in the set where the band begin to really stretch out and do "their Grateful Dead thing," chiefly, that is, letting Jerry play while the other members play around him.

The Dead were always highly original but it was traditional American music on which they based their basic country-psychedelic-blues sound. "I Know You Rider" ("Gonna miss me when I'm gone") is one of those traditional songs that the Dead absolutely turned into one of their own. In this performance, the guitars are lined up, the vocals are tuned up and the band takes a song as old as time into the space-age outer limits. Yea, baby!

The first disc closes out with the band's version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee," a song that had achieved No. 1 status the year before as performed by the Dead's contemporary, Janis Joplin. The band's turn at it is at once reverent and unique (and believe it or not, they do without the final jam).

Disc two's highlights are the band's big numbers, a 17-minute cut-loose treatment of the Young Rascals' hit, "Good Lovin'," (again, a song the Dead ended up with the patent on, if not the royalties), plus a laid-back "Casey Jones" and a straight-up tribute to Marty Robbins and Garcia's Latino roots with "El Paso."

The final disc boasts songs in which the Grateful Dead do exclusively what they really do best and that's jamming. There are two tremendous, elongated versions of "Dark Star" and the super-psychedelicized western stomp, "Me & My Uncle." Plus, there is the Robert Hunter/Garcia ballad, "Wharf Rat," followed by the Hunter/Weir dancing shoes classic, "Sugar Magnolia." The disc closes out with not one, but two, show-stopping versions of "Not Fade Away," the old Buddy Holly song that the Dead included in their set night after night.

The two bonus tracks included are "Turn on Your Lovelight" and "Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)" recorded at London's Lyceum the same year, marking Pigpen's final performances with the group.

And if that isn't enough Grateful Dead for you? Well, they have a gigantic catalog from which to choose. But for now, Rockin the Rhein ought to keep even the most dedicated Deadhead happy for hours.
