I got this Popcorn maker for an early Christmas present and was extremely excited to get it. I had wanted a popcorn machine for awhile now due to how much healthier they are versus microwave popcorn, and honestly I think it tastes better. I followed the directions carefully for my first couple of uses. Using the top to measure out my kernels and what not. The first time I used it, it worked really well! Then the second time I made it... It decided it didn't want to push out the air needed to pop the kernels. Though in a couple of seconds it came on and popped just fine leaving a couple of the popcorn burned, and left behind a little bit of smoke. Though the third time I tried to make popcorn, I turned it on... and immediatly it started to smoke twice as much as the last time. Then it just turned off with a puff of smoke and wont turn back on. I am extremely disappointed with this product being as I used it twice in a week and it wont work.

Many negative reviewers here on this product perhaps have missed the boat by not reading the manufacturer's directions supplied with the Rival. If you put the right amount of corn in the hopper, as directed, you will have a decent amount of popcorn with very few kernals unpopped. This unit is designed to work with a properly filled hopper of kernals not just a few teaspoons. I popped my first batch by filling the measuring cup almost to the brim. After consuming most of the corn, I counted 14 kernals that were unpopped in the bowl and 9 unpopped remaining in the hopper. I'd say this is pretty good for a first pop in any machine air or wet. Certainly better than the wet method. Super easy clean-up, the popcorn produced is heathier and to me taste better than I thought. Pop time was about 1.5 minutes to completion. Can you buy a better machine? Possibly, but this one works just fine for -$.

I disagree with most of the reviews on here. It's just a basic popcorn maker and it works FINE! All you need is a scoop and a half with the lil scooper (butter melter) on top a large bowl and your good to go! Very few unpopped kernels. I do not know what some of the reviewers were expecting, it's just popcorn lol. I use it at least once a week!

I only got this popper today after returning a disappointing one I bought last week. This one was less than $1 more but at least it actually works as expected, meaning it pops the corn instead of spitting it out all over the place. The main thing I would suggest is that you use a very big bowl the first couple of times you use this popper. I filled it to the max level inside the popper and ended up with popcorn all over the place, but at least it was POPPED popcorn and not hot kernels. I filled up a good sized bowl from my stand mixer and another slightly smaller bowl and my dog still got the treat of all the popcorn that landed on the floor. It is more popcorn than I really wanted to make but that's what large zipper bags are for!

plastic insides make this a bad choice

very saddened to see that within 1 month, something that is plastic has broken off inside. The unit had a permanent spot on the bar and did offer good popcorn for the extremely short time I got to use it. I went to turn it on this time and it wasn't sounding right and then it started puffing smoke so I turned it off, dumped the corn and looked for what could have been causing the unusual sound. I finally opened it up to find a piece of plastic broken off inside the unit. While I used this on a somewhat regular basis, still as I had only purchased it a month ago we are talking a total of 8 times maybe. Consequently I don't believe that to be anything but a poor value, I also rated Durability at poor however would have rated it extremely poor if that had been an option. It had not been dropped or even barely moved really as I said it had a permanent spot on my bar because it was something I used regularly. While it met my expectation for a very short time as far as the popcorn it made, I had to rate it poor since it did not even make a month of usage.

When I needed to replace our old air popper I bought this one as it was the only one in stock at my store. Initially, I was very pleased with the popper. It was smaller than any of my previous ones so it takes up less counter/ cupboard space and it had an on/off switch. After using it a number of times however, I decided to return it for two reasons: 1. There was a chemical smell every time I used the popper. I thought it would go away as I used the popper, but it was still there even the last time I popped corn with it. I think the chemical smell was because it got too hot. 2. The top started to melt and deform about the 10th time I used it I have used hot air poppers for over 25 years and didn't change the way I make popcorn when I got my new popper. I tried changing my style, turning it off a little earlier in the popping sequence, and continued using if for another 5 or 6 times. The top continued to deform and turning it off sooner resulted in more unpopped kernels. I have purchased another corn popper from WalMart and hope that it works better than the Rival. I had it shipped site to store and returned the Rival at the same time I picked up the Presto. It is larger, lacks an on/off switch and cost a dollar more. It appears to be the same as the one I was replacing. That one was a free gift the bank gave my father-in-law in the late eighties, we had used over 5 years and sent it to another state for our kids to use at college.

Pros 1) Quick (3 minutes from on to off) 2) Convenient (Simple instructions, barely any clean-up, small enough to keep on counter at all times) 3) Makes tasty popcorn (Though that may be the popcorn brand itself) 4) Healthy alternative to microwave popcorn (No grease/oils that comes with all microwave popcorn) Cons 1) Loud (Dont use if anybody is sleeping) 2) Slow to cool (It needs to cool off before it's put away and that takes some time) 3 Heads up (Some unpopped kernels may pop in the bowl flinging some pieces across the counter) 4 Salt wont stick (But I think that goes for all air-popped popcorn)

I like the machine, the only problem is that you have to make a TON. according to the directions you have to use at least one cup of kernals, one cup of kernals makes 2 huge bowls of popcorn. So its good if you need alot made at once. Other then that it cooks it nicely, you get a few kernals jumping out but not to many.

  • A. There is a marker inside that shows how much it will handle. But generally it handles 1/3 to 1/2 cup of popcorn.

  • A. there is a measuring cup attached for measuring out the unpopped popcorn and it is 1/2 cup. While the directions suggest not to use any more than 1/2 cup at a time, I believe you can use a smaller amount to pop a smaller amount of popcorn.

  • A. It can handle up to 1.5 scoops of popcorn kernels, which is around 1/2 cup I think. That will make a large bowl full of popcorn.

Is it possible to get a replacement part for this product? I've only had it a few months. The cover where the hole is has warped and I can't use it anymore. Thanks

  • A. I believe you can find a part, see below, a copy and paste from online Rival Appliances Parts, the last part see an 800 number. Worth a try; if no luck online look in shops like Goodwill, might get lucky and find the item. Where to Find Replacement Parts Rival doesn't offer many solutions for purchasing replacement parts on the company website other than a few items like deep fryer filter replacements, mixing paddles, ingredient scoops and other parts for their popular snow cone maker. They also don't list a phone number on their website where you can call for support or service. However, Rival is a division of Jarden Consumer Solutions. On the Jarden website, the number listed for contacting Rival's support is 1-800-557-4825 and the site also features its own replacement part section for Rival appliances with the same items available on the Rival website. There are also a number of websites devoted to small kitchen appliance parts, many of which offer a range of replacement parts for Rival appliances. A few sites to visit when searching for options for Rival replacement parts include: Amazon.com Parts Town Pronto.com
