WHAT A BLAST!

Okay, so I finally went all-in and picked up the base set of Star Wars Villainous: Power of the Dark Side and, let's be honest, immediately snagged all the expansions too – Scum and Villainy and Revenge at Last. No regrets there, having a huge roster of villains to choose from is half the fun! Now, if you're new to the Villainous system, I'm not going to lie, there's a bit of a learning curve here. Each villain has their own unique objective, their own deck of cards filled with allies, items, and effects, and their own Fate deck packed with heroes and events designed to trip them up. Add in the Star Wars specific mechanics like Ambition, Vehicles, and Deep Space, and that first game (maybe even the second) can feel a little overwhelming. You're trying to figure out your own strategy while also keeping an eye on what everyone else is doing, and their goals are completely different from yours! BUT, and this is a big but, once you and your group push through those initial rounds and start to grasp how the different villains operate and how the Fate deck can absolutely wreck someone's best-laid plans (in the most delightfully villainous way, of course), it clicks. It becomes an absolute blast! The asymmetry, which initially contributes to the learning curve, is what gives the game so much replayability. Trying to master each villain's path to victory is a rewarding challenge, and the dynamic of players constantly interfering with each other using the Fate deck keeps things hilariously tense and unpredictable. Seriously, stick with it through that initial hump. Once everyone at the table has a few games under their belt, Star Wars Villainous transforms into a strategic, thematic, and incredibly fun race to the dark side. Having all the expansions just means the villainous possibilities are practically endless. Highly recommend diving in!

Fun game. If you enjoy board games and Star Wars, this is the game for you. Good for 10 and up, probably, though the game mechanics can get complex.
