I know this does 12 cups but sometimes it is just 2 of us eating the popcorn so can you make just a couple of cups in this popper?
by sanborn61 12/14/2010

  • A. Yes. Just adjust time accordingly. I normally only put in 1/4 cup of raw popcorn for my wife and I. Usually takes about 3 1/2 minutes to pop. Just listen for the popping to stop then remove.

  • A. You can absolutely make less than 12cups @ time-just follow the directions on your popcorn package.

  • A. I have. Instead of using the 1/3 cup suggested, I have used 1/4 cup or even just a couple of tablespoons. But if you use the 1/3 cup and don't eat all of it, just put the left overs in a plastic container or zip loc bag.

Where can you purchase them? And aside from this, what else would you need to purchase separately? Thanks!!

  • A. Unless you want to use oil, you only need the kernals which you can purchase from any grocery store. The only thing I recommend is to maybe spend a few cents more per pound and get fresher popcorn (i.e. unfortunately, not the bin @ Whole Foods, etc). I buy yellow organic in a bag. Tastes great & works perfectly!

  • A. Yes, it doesn't come with any sample of popcorn. I use Orville Redenbacher's popcorn but you can use any brand. There is no special popcorn specifically for microwaves. Only other items you need to purchase would be toppings such as butter, salt, or whatever you like on your popcorn.

  • A. I bought orville redenbachers. The machine comes with filters you put on the bottom, Comes with 8 of them one is good for 24 uses if you dont use butter or oil in the maker otherwise each one is good for 12 uses.

  • A. Yes, you do have to purchase the popcorn kernels separately. I recommend the yellow kernels as they seem to be much lighter and larger. You can purchase from any grocer, Costco, etc.

  • A. Yes you have to buy the popcorn separately and I find the baged popcorn from Trader Joes works just as well as any of the expensive brands. Also the little consentrator discs are NOT neccesary it works just as well with out them and a little oil in the bottom.

How often do the concentrators need replacing and how much are they? Are they needed when popping with oil?
by an anonymous customer 7/28/2009

  • A. I'm on my 6th Presto Popper (the tops get brittle and break into pieces after about 2 years of heavy use) and have never found the "concentrators" to make enough of a difference (i.e., sparing me from unpopped seed waste) to justify their expense. By the way, I simply pour seeds in the bottom and nuke high four about 4.2 minutes. Yes, I get some unpopped seeds with every batch (you must stop nuking lest you burn what has already popped while trying to pop every last seed), but not a whole lot. Indeed, I have doubt whether the so-called "concentrator" makes a whit of difference. For that matter, I buy the 50 lb bag of seeds at Sam's Club (a LOT cheaper, per pound, than the 1 or 2 pound bags of seeds you can buy at the grocery store). So if out of that 50 pounds I lose a pound to unpopped seeds from not using concentrators, well hey, that's far less of a financial loss than the cost of the concentrators.

  • A. It is designed to help produce a higher heat where the UN-popped kernels lie. Each liner can be used multiple times(dozen or more) before needing replacement. Yes you can pop the corn without it but you will have more UN-popped kernels at the bottom if you do. No oil needed to pop. Feel free to add butter or oil as a topping along with any salt needed. Concentrators cost about $4 or $5 per package of 8.

  • A. It's hard to say how often, but you will know. I find I replace mine approx. every 6 to 10 times. I do not use oil with mine. If you use oil, you will have to change them more often. They are definitely necessary when popping popcorn whether you use oil or not.

  • A. The package says you should get 6 uses out of it if you are not using oil or butter (yes you do need to use them when using oil). I got 3 uses out of the first one. I have lost track of how many times I've used the second concentrator (at least 10 and probably more). I don't remember how many concentrator come in a pack, but there are several and I think they were $6 at my local store.

  • A. The directions are in the manual that came with the popper. With using oil you have to change them more frequently...also you can find them online at Presto and they cost $1.58 per 8. You have to use them no matter what-this is what pops the popcorn.

i've lately realized that i'm a huge popcorn fan and will go to the theater and see ANY movie just to get some popcorn :) was looking at microwaves today and snatched one of these babies up b/c i can't really purchase bagged popcorn anymore after transitioning to Veganism a year ago...soon as we got home i read all of the instructions which seemed very simple and popped the corn...i'm guessing that there might have been one or two unpopped kernels (so few that i didn't notice) and it was so good that the bowl didn't survive the first 15 minutes of the movie so i actually paused it to make another and it's not b/c there wasn't enough for me and my daughter (it's about the same amount as a bag of popped corn) but b/c it was THAT good...it only took 2 minutes and 15 seconds in our microwave and cleanup was easy...

I had my doubts and wanted to get this as a gift for someone. Our hot air popper had broken down and I could not find a suitable replacement. I decided to give this a try prior to buying for someone else and fell in love. It is now the standard gift with a movie and a bag of popcorn. It pops almost every kernel. I am talking light fluffy popcorn with maybe a kernel or two left over, just as good as air popped if not better. And just as quick too. I do not use oil and I also put in a separate bowl to eat so that the butter does not ruin the heating discs. I recommend buying a second package of discs to keep, but I know that we use them way longer than is listed on the directions and they work for a long time. If the popcorn starts burning easily then there may be a kernel stuck under the disc, remove it and clean out the bottom and then reinsert or put in a new disc. Love this product.

This is my second time to purchase this popcorn popper. I used the first one for years. I use it almost every day with with a small amount of olive oil so the salt will stick. Don't wash in the dishwasher though, it will warp. If I run out of the white bottom liner I just use it without it , And it works just as well. Wonderful for super quick low calorie snack.

I had this product for years, maybe over a decade,: Accidentally, I nuked it too long, so it was destroyed (becoming slightly melted), scorching popcorn and staining my microwave walls, perhaps irreparably. This was my own fault..... These don't require oil--oil would hurt the replaceable paper "concentrator" on the bottom. These inexpensive concentrators burn through fairly quickly, so occasional purchases of a package of a few is required. Sometimes, a slightly scorched taste came through--getting the timing just right can be difficult. Popped corn usually causes the lid to rise up slightly. I prefer air poppers over these--no scorching, no harmed microwaves. Either product offers healthier, far more economical popcorn than microwave bag popcorn....

I've had one of these for years now and I love the thing. Tried other poppers but this one is the greatest! Makes great popcorn. Much better and cheaper the the microwave bags. Simple to use. Can be used with or without oil. You can use any kind of popcorn you want. Does take paper concertrator cups but each one can be used more then once and it's still far cheaper then the bags although replacement concentrators can be hard to find in the store. (Just came from the store and they were out.# Anyone who say's this doesn't work has done something wrong when they used it. You do have to watch it just like you do the bags and when the popping slows to about 2 seconds between pops stop the microwave. #Any longer and the popcorn will scorch# Only takes about 2 1/2 min to pop and almost all kernels will pop. #Better brands of popcorn will pop better then the cheap brands) The bowl is a little small for family move night but for a nighttime snack it is great, fast and easy.
