Electrode, Comp-447757757, DC-prod-dfw8, ENV-prod-a, PROF-PROD, VER-26.20.0, SHA-38e78de46db1a394393656b0979b8716e9fdfcf0, CID-f8370a4b-d9c-1670e03f4905e7,f8370a4b-d9c-1670e03f490e51,f8370a4b-d9c-1670e03f490e51

Personnel: Charlie Byrd, Romero Lubambo (guitar); Maucha Adnet (vocals); Scott Hamilton (tenor saxophone); Chuck Redd (vibraphone); Nilson Matta (bass); Duduka Da Fonseca (drums).
Recorded at Sound On Sound, New York, New York from May 12-14, 1998. Includes liner notes by Mark Holston.
Classically-trained jazz acoustic guitarist Byrd has crafted a gem of a tribute to one of the most popular and influential forms of music to come out of Brazil: the bossa nova. It's a music that conjures warm, sultry, romantic nights in one of the most diverse countries in South America and the world. Byrd was one of the first American jazz players to popularize bossa nova in America in the early 1960s--yet this album is very special.
For the first time, Byrd has recorded with an all-Brazilian band, with his usual drummer Redd playing the vibraphone, and a special guest: Scott Hamilton, whose warm, breathy style recalls Ben Webster and Stan Getz (who recorded JAZZ SAMBA with Byrd). On a few songs, the band is joined by the lovely Sade-like voice of Maucha Adnet. The program consists of songs by two of Brazil's best-known songwriters, Luis Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as traditional melodies and a couple of originals. Exquisite!
