    It's bird proof too!

I got this "squirrel proof" bird feeder cause I got tired of fighting the squirrels. Little did I know that it would be bird proof also. The pirches are so short that the one or two bird's that have gone to it have to hover to get the food. I did however cut some coat hangers and add some pirch space and I am waiting to see if they hit on it. If they don't I'm afraid it's going back for a different one. If you'd like you can look at my photo and see what I did to try and help it's to the left. It's not a permanent fix but if they sit on them I'll be happy. If not they can easily be removed so I can return it. I'll post back and let everyone know if they worked! :)

Well, the price was terrific but the squirrels are able to hold onto it just fine though it is a deterrent. Large birds also have difficulty. See my picture of the squirrel eating his heart out!

I'm not sure what region of the world this feeder was designed for, but where I live squirrels have arms. It appears the designer of this product wasn't aware of this fact. If you look outside and notice that your squirrels, in your area, also have arms, do not buy this product.

We have a large flock of small finches and chickadees, and none of them used this feeder. It sat for over a month with no takers. Birds flapped but couldn't land. Even if they could land, there is not enough height between the perch and the hole, so most birds at 4.5-6.5" are too tall to be able to eat. The only birds that might be able to land are the clinging birds like chickadees and nuthatches, which might hang from the perches while feeding. My chickadees prefer my other tube and gazebo style feeders which have seed holes farther away from the perches. Squirrels can't reach my feeders thanks to cylinder shaped pole mounted baffles, so I can't comment on whether it's squirrel proof. If the birds can't land, it's a complete waste. Some positive notes... I really liked the aesthetic design, with the small hoods above each hole which deter frequent rain from spoiling seed. None of the seed fell out of the holes from wind blowing either.

    Best Bird Feeder I've Owned

I bought this bird/finch feeder a few months ago. Not only do I love it, but the goldfinches and house finches love it too! Every day, all day long, they are feeding from it...and most of the time I have finches sitting on the tree branches above, waiting for a vacancy to open up. I've even had family members comment on how I always have finches on my feeder. (I haven't seen a squirrel on or near my feeder yet.) I only use pure thistle seed. If you're having a problem with birds getting the seed out, try pure thistle seed. It works perfectly (perfect size for the openings). The only birds I ever see on my feeder are finches (and the perches are fine for finches to "perch" on). The doves and chickadees eat the seed that falls on the ground below the feeder. Also, I love this feeder because it's so easy to fill and it's well built. I like the metal feeder openings and the metal perches (very hard to find). I honestly don't understand the negative reviews because this feeder has exceeded all of my expectations.

I have had my Pennington Squirrel Proof bird feeder for about two years now & have loved it. I have had many birds that have fed from it and have not had problems with squirrels. It has puzzled me as in the past month I have not seen any birds feeding from it & the seed is nearly full in it. I have always used safflower seed & not changed the type of seed I use in it. I always add extra seed when it is at the halfway point so it has never been out of seed. What could be the problem on why birds are not coming to it now? Is there any maintenance I am supposed to do?

    • A. Is it possible you haven't been replacing the seed down by the ports? If you refill it at the halfway point without pouring out and replacing the seed at the bottom the old seed may have become unsavory for some reason. I would try cleaning it out and filling it with fresh seed.

    • A. The feeding ports are too deep on this feeder. I pryed the ports off the feeder and used a metal saw to cut back the bottom side of the port nearly flush with the edge. (Use a small screwdriver to fold the plastic tabs out of the way for removal). This gives the birds better access to the seeds. The larger birds will still have problems since the porch is likewise poorly designed -- but smaller birds can use it. You may have to make additional modifications to help larger birds such as cardinals.
