Oil filled radiator heaters

As far as WE'RE concerned, these little heaters are a "BEST KEPT SECRET" ! ! ! Met and EXCEEDED any expectations we had ! We have electric heat in our apartment and drove our electric bill OUTA SIGHT. These little heaters are nothin less than AWESOME. We have 2 and will buy one more ! We put a small fan behind each one to distribute the heat throughout the room and that helps a lot. We use them day and night with NO WORRIES. We love them ! For those that have one that don't work or don't work properly.....return it. There is something wrong with YOURS. Be fair with your rating. It is ALWAYS possible to get a "lemon" no matter what you buy. That doesn't make them ALL bad. With the WalMart return policy.....how can you go wrong ? ? ?

I have two old panel oil-filled radiators which are vertical flat-panels of heavy steel which are no longer made, so I searched for current offerings in the 'finned' radiator design and chose the Optimus, based on reported performance, price and the fact that I knew of the brand before living in America. Double-box packaging meant there was no damage in transit and assembly of the castors was dead-easy. As is the way of many produced items these days, the metal is very thin and the quality was not a patch on the older panel units and the whole radiator seemed rather lightweight but a quick glance at the instructions and I plugged it in and switched on. We have cathedral ceilings of some 14' tall so even though with a high BTU, it was never going to completely warm the main room but it was bought just to help maintain a warm ambient temperature, so that the oil-fired boiler isn't cycling every fifteen minutes to achieve the 65F minimum setting for the main rooms. On the basis for which it was bought, the Optimus Electric Portable Oil-Filled Convection Radiator Heater, HEOP6010, achieves the objective and being so (relatively) inexpensive to run, it is left on a low setting all the time currently but I expect once the freezing cold weather arrives, it will be on high, along with an open-fire in the evenings.

Money Saving Heater!

I bought 2 of these heaters last year and they were amazing. I monitored the electric bill over the winter as well as the propane gas bills. We were able to save $600 on propane with only an increase of $35-40 on the electric bill for the 4 to 5 months of usage. The varied temperature settings are convenient. This year I bought myself another one, as well as one for my brother and my mother!

Great Space Heater So Far

I read all the reviews about the Optimus Electric Portable Oil-Filled Convection Radiator Heater and felt that despite the reported occasional lemon, this space heater was a good option for my home--especially considering the price. I decided that if I did in fact get a lemon, I'd just return it. So I bought two of these and have had no problems whatsoever so far. I use them in my kids' bedroom and my bedroom. It keeps the kids bedroom (approx. 12x10') nice and toasty with the door cracked an inch. Their room is typically very cold in the winter even with the heat on, so I am relieved that I no longer have to worry about them freezing all night long. My bedroom is bigger and the same space heater does a great job. I haven't used it to roast, per say, but simply to raise the temperature to a level where I don't mind getting out of bed on cold winter mornings. (We keep the house fairly cool to save money.) Our energy bills seem fairly low so far with these heaters--certainly less than if we were using our HVAC to heat our entire house to the temperature that we're using these puppies for. Considering the risk of a lemon, and knowing that I would just return one, I am pleased with the performance of this space heater and would even consider buying another one for our guest bedroom. Also, to address the reviews of poor castor wheels, they don't bother me in the slightest. The unit is small enough that I can easily pick it up to move it around, although I do roll it, too. I will admit that I'm never moving it more than five feet at a time, but for me the wheels haven't been an issue.

This heater is exceptional for medium closed spaces like a bedroom or den. I use it in my master bedroom and it heats nicely. I like the adjustable thermostat with 3 settings, and when room reaches temp, I can set it to low to conserve energy. I just began using it so cannot compare electrical costs yet, but I have owned a similar one before and my heating costs were very reasonable compared to running my central heat during cold months. I would not try to warm up a large or combined open space (e.g., living room, dining room) if trying to reduce electricity costs.

My heating oil tank ran dry last winter so we rushed to Walmart and decided on this heater to get us by until the next day when the oil truck arrived. With our bedroom door closed, our room was toasty warm all night long. We found when temperatures are in the upper 30's, we can run this heater in our first floor hallway and its enough to keep the furnace from running in our small house. This year I am going to pay close attention to the electric bills. If its reasonable, I'm going to buy a 2nd unit to reduce the amount of heating oil we use.

Bought 2 and they look ok. They work so far. Definitely lower quality than Delonghi or Pelonis (had both for 2 years). Got these for supplemental heat, since we have no other heat source. Phoenix winters are mild, so space heaters are all we need in 2000 sqft ranch home. Got by with 2, but this winter is a bit cooler, and don't want to be stuck if the others die. Optimus heaters are flimsier and don't roll as well (wheels are cheap and don't rotate well.) But they are substantially less expensive, too. If you want a really well made, quality heater; get Delonghi or Pelonis. If you want to save a few bucks, get this one.

This heater is nice and quiet and does a great job on a small room or bathroom for extra heat when it gets really very cold in the 30's. We use it in our camper and have had great luck and being quiet we don't your sleep interrupted with any noise.

How long is the cord? How much room is needed around it for spacing?
by DeskWalker 12/15/2011
6 answers
  • A. I'm sure the instructions will say not to put anything within six inches beside or 12 inches above. Personally, I don't worry much about spacing around my radiator, except to allow un-restricted flow of cold air around the base... they just don't get that hot. They get hot enough to melt plastic wrap all over everything, but not catch it on fire, and pretty much ruin any heavier plastic. Something sitting an inch away from it isn't about to burst into flames or anything. Just don't lay anything on top of it. However, they work best if there is some clearance around them due to their need to draw air up from the floor and shoot it out the top. The fins heat air on the floor, which rises through the fins and comes out hot at the top. So easy airflow around the bottom translates to more warm air rising from the top. If you lay a tee-shirt on top of it all night, that will probably ruin the tee-shirt, because it will trap heat, and have several hours to trap a lot of it. So that might start a fire, and would certainly reduce heating capability since it would trap hot air in the fins, instead of letting it flow up, sucking cold air in after it at the bottom.

  • A. The cord is six feet long, and you would need 3 feet spacing from wall and other objects if used on low to med. setting. More than 3 feet spacing if used on the high (1500 watt setting), for maximum safety.

  • A. The cord is about 6 feet. The unit does get pretty hot. As long as you put it in a corner you should be ok.
