I just returned from Costa Rica where I had the opportunity to really try my D7100 under different types of environment. Well, I took over 3k pics where in many instances I had to push the ISO to 3200 due to poor light conditions. This camera performed flawless coupled with the 18-300mm lens. Used the camera mainly in A and S modes which are my favorites. There were instances where I pushed the EV to +2 without any problems. Used just about every focus mode combination the camera offers. I was very lucky that I own the D7000 which helped me greatly to handle my new D7100 that I received the week before departure. I did not get to use the crop feature but I am getting ready to use it this coming week while visiting the Everglades. This time it will be coupled with my 70-200mm. I feel that this is a superb camera and as I continue to learn about its new features, my pictures will improve dramatically.

No way would I recommend this
I bought this online, and got it in the mail. I took it to my daughter's birthday party and what I got were a combo of actual color and yellow tinted photographs. I brought it home and tested it by adjusting all settings, etc but it still had yellow tint in the photos. I'm a professional photographer, so if you tell yourself, he may have not adjusted the setting a correctly....not true. I ended up returning it and got a full refund. I turned around and ended up buying the Nikon D800 which I LOVE!

Professional features for a 'prosumer' price.

The D7100 is *almost* perfect for my needs. Burst mode is, well... meh. I shoot RAW almost 100% of the time and the buffer/processing times are a little sluggish, but for the price, I really can't complain. If you're a 'spray-n-pray' photographer that needs high FPS, especially one who shoots RAW, you may want to consider stepping up to a FX-body. For 99% of serious amateurs and semi-pro's, though, the D7100 will work wonders. I'm also not too thrilled with the locking mechanisms for both the mode and drive mode dials, but I'll get over that, too. Neither of my complaints necessitate giving this camera 4 stars instead of 5, though. The construction feels firm and sturdy and not 'plasic-y', which gives me the confidence that I can take it out for a long day of shooting in places where it's bound to get bumped, and not fret over it. An extra level of confidence is added knowing that Nikon sealed the body from moisture and dust the same way they did for some of their higher end full-frame cameras. The AF system is extremely responsive and quick, especially with quality glass adorning it. IQ is fantastic, though I'm struggling to see how much difference not having an OLPF really makes to an image when using good lenses. I haven't done any side-by-side tests with it yet, so the difference may be more apparent when I do. Still, regardless of the difference it makes, I have not been disappointed with the quality of images I've taken so far. The D7100 definitely stands out in low light situations with the new AF system. It is a crop sensor, obviously, so don't expect miracles once the ISO really starts shooting through the roof, but I've found some images still usable at ISO 6400 even without post-processing. That, in itself, is pretty impressive considering the sensor. There are more than enough reviews online if you want a real in-depth review on the D7100, I'm only listing a few features that have stood out to me. There are many, many more features available, and plenty of which I haven't even sampled yet, so I'll refrain from reviewing something I haven't personally tested. All in all, the D7100 offers photographers, from the beginner to the most advanced, a LOT of features for the price with very few cons, in my opinion. Get one. Shoot it. You'll probably love it!

Really fast, beautiful photos!

I moved up to this camera from the D5100. I was ready to move on to a more advanced body, and the D7100 was perfect! What I noticed first was the how quickly the auto focus locked in. You can go from having the camera off to snapping a perfectly focused shot in about a second. Everything this camera does is fast. The images have come out looking gorgeous! I do mostly nature and landscape photography, but also like to takes pictures of my kids, and the D7100 does a fantastic job of getting those shots of the kids running and playing. If you can't afford to step up to the full frame bodies, as well as having to buy all new lenses, then this camera is perfect. Whether you are using a prime lens, or a zoom, this camera will take photos you can really be proud of.

Love it!

The Nikon D7100 is my first DSLR camera. My initial plan was to go with the Nikon D3200 - but everyone I spoke with (shooting with one) tried to sell me their setups, eager to upgrade to the 7100. I wanted a camera that I could grow into-- and I am confident I picked the right one! There is definitely a learning curve coming from a point-and-shoot, some of the controls are unintuitive/ very hidden. That being said- I never sat down with my manual, I just jumped right in and started playing around. Overall, I am so glad I chose this camera as my entry into the photography world. It has been a pleasure learning on. I am happy with the pictures I am taking- they just keep getting better and better. I love this camera and I know I am going to continue to love it for years to come. Still much to learn, but I feel like I am off to a great start, and excited to see what else I can do with it! I would definitely recommend the Nikon D7100 to others just starting off with photography (currently trying to talk my dad into buying one).

An excellent camera that delivers

I already owned a D7000 and have really gotten some great pictures with it. I bought a Nikkor 70-300mm VR and started taking wildlife pictures. I was loving life…. Then I decided it was time to move up and get a zoom lens with a longer reach and couple it with a teleconverter since the top of the line zooms are out of my price range. After doing some research, the auto focus on some of these lenses will not work unless the camera supports auto focus at F8. The D7100 does support auto focus at F8, so I made the decision to forego the new zoom for now and get a camera that will work with the lens I am looking at. I ordered it, received it on Friday and had the opportunity to go to a wildlife refuge over the weekend. The weather was not the best although it did cooperate long enough to get some shoots in. When I got home and downloaded the pictures I was amazed. I am not sure if it is the new focusing system with the 15 cross-type sensors, the removal of the OLPF filter or the extra megapixels in the sensor but it gives you the ability to zoom in and crop a photo that still has high definition and sharpness like nothing I have dealt with before. I have attached and original photo and a severely cropped version for an example. I got the original and the cropped version printed out in 12x18 and the cropped version shows no signs of pixeling. I can't wait to get back out and get some more photos and in a few months when I can afford the larger zoom and teleconverter I am positive I will absolutely love what I get with this camera.

A fine camera indeed

I have owned this body for several months now and have shot several thousand photographs. I shoot macro, landscapes, and birds predominately. I have never had the camera fail to write to the Sandisk Extreme Pro 32gb card, nor have I experienced garbled images. Just returned from a workshop at Rancho Laguna Seca photographing birds. After deleting the obvious clunkers I had about 1,500 images. Because of poor light they were shot at ISOs of 400 to 1200 and with wide apertures to get the necessary shutter speed. I used the Nikon 500 f4 and the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4 tele extender as well as the Nikon SB 900 Flash set for high speed. I experienced no overheating. The focusing accuracy was so good and the images so sharp you can count the barbels on the birds feathers. My only minor complaint is that I wish the buffer was larger especially when shooting birds in flight.

Whats not to like?

I received this camera last week. I'm still learning all the buttons, knobs, switches, and dials....there are many. This is my first DSLR so I am behind the curve and not too familiar with Nikon DSLR bodies. The menu system is great and intuitive. The camera takes great pictures and is, in my opinion, an excellent low light camera for being a DX camera, albeit not nearly as well as a full frame. But if you compare price/performance I think its above par against any other APS-C camera. I really have no complaints about this camera other than the buffer size. Continuous shooting max of 6 or 7 shots is a bit low when shooting RAW. If you don't use RAW and just shoot JPEG this number dramatically increases. I like the 14 bit RAW option over the industry standard 12 bit. I can't speak for write speeds of the SD Cards. I tried a 32GB class 10 card against the dual 32GB X400 cards I bought for this camera. I didn't notice too much of a speed difference, probably because of the limited buffer size. I really like the option to have the RAW files saved to one card and the JPEG to the other card.

Excellent Upgrade!!

This DSLR is way more than I was expected, I have only had it about 2 weeks but I have already shot close to 1000 images or more. the sharpness was what I was looking for, but not what I expected.. I upgraded from the D7000 , and dont get me wrong I loved my D7000, but wow.. I am planning to make this my last body until I upgrade to the full frame D-800 or whatever the equivalent is when im ready.. So if your ready to upgrade but not ready to take the FX plunge this is your final stop

Excellent all around camera and lens

The D7100 is my first new Nikon in ten years. Previously used D70. Bought the two lens package. Simply love the 18 - 140 lens. Looking forward to using the 70- 300 for baseball season. The quality of the camera and the photos are outstanding. Still learning the features. Very happy with the camera and lenses so far.

A great enthusiast-targeted camera body

I've been shooting with this camera body and a Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 lens for around a year now and am very pleased with its performance. I was a bit hesitant to get this body at first because Nikon decided to omit the optical low-pass filter and I had read that there was a potential for moiré-induced artifacts when shooting stills of objects with fine patterned detail. Well I have not run into that problem yet. The photos I've taken with this camera have been great. In my opinion this is the next camera body you want to upgrade to if your not quite ready to spend the money on a pro body.
