Amzing lens

This lens can produce amazing low light images as well as great portraits. I'm using it for headshot portraits in studio and outdoors and works fantastic. I do the zooming with my feet and the quality of the images is superb. I also purchased this lens for food photography in natural light (using daylight through windows and diffusers) and it opens up nicely to capture great shallow depth of field and sharpness. Its been on my D90 camera for 2 weeks straight and loving it. I use D90 primarily and D3000 as back up. This lens will work with the D3000 but only using manual focus. Also, the nice thing about using this prime lens versus a 18-55mm at full 55mm is that you don't get that barrel effect.

Diaomond at a price of pebble

Pro's: 1. Low-light capability (its obvious @ 1.8) 2. Super cheap (at this price other than this you'll probably get add-on filters) 3. Sharp beyond ~f/2.5 4. Light weight (1st time I saw it, it seemed a toy lens to me :-P) 5. Great for portraits, street photography, indoor photography. 6. Auto-focus is there except for the beginner DSLR Bodies (D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200 etc). 7. Manual focus is easy though takes practice. 8. Aperture ring is there (its a D-type) - helpful in many cases e.g., in movie recording or if you want macro-photography using lens reversing rings. 9. Though the body is plastic, mount is metal. 10. Doesn't rotate during auto-focusing, a relief for those who uses polariser. 11. FX (full frame) compatible, DX owners get the best portion of the lens. 12. Extremely low distortion. Con's 1. Cannot auto-focus on the beginner DSLR Bodies (D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200 etc), manual focus is the only option on this bodies. 2. At f/1.8 its not sharp, you have to step down to f/2 for acceptable sharpness, beyond f/2.5 its sharp though. 3. Shallow depth (obvious) at higher aperture. 4. A bit noisy focus-operation. 5. Quality of bokeh is horrible at max aperture - you can see the effect of straight blades - Heptagonal shaped bokeh is visible. Stopping down a bit will help. 6. If you are used to zoom lenses and using prime lenses 1st time, a reminder - you will need to position yourself with respect to your subject for the right composition.

Amazing addition to the AW1 with FT1 adaptor !

This prime lens turned my AW1 into a beast. Sharpness, wonderfull low light caption and control over focusing via the manual focus ring. You just set and lock aperture at 22 on the aperture ring and the AW1 controls aperture via the FT1 mount. The focus only works on manual though, but it's no big problem. The lens is still amazing and fun to use. Maybe an upcomming firmware update might add autofocus ability ? Who knows. This is still the best bang for the buck i've had !

Great available light lens

One evening I left a meeting and walked home via the Inner Harbor. I took photos of the water front and the boats without flash and I had a collection of fantastic photos. When I flew back home from St. Louis last year in Detroit the pilot pointed out a beautiful skyline and I photographed it and the people on the plane were amazed. As a result of owning this lens, I am looking to purchase the 35mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/1.8 either later this year or next year.

Great Lens for a reasonable price.

I still consider myself a beginner in Photography... I think that prime lenses are a great tool to teach yourself how to frame a picture if you are as bad as I was in the very beginning. This specific lens is simple and light and remains one of my favorite go to lens. It is versatile and can be used for portraits, close-ups and is great in low light and interior settings. At this price, it is a no brainer...

Cheaply priced to take superb pictures. Highly recommended.

I only have two lenses to carry on, a 2.8, 70-200mm Nikkor and this. This lens shows it's superiority in portraits creating nice bokeh. Might feel made out of cheap materials but light enough to travel around with my Nikon D7000, a real good match. Uses it for a D40 (of course manual only, but that's where your skills comes in) once in a while with the same good results. Can't ask for more. Great prime lens.

Best Lens I have ever used

Holy Cow.........The Other Reviews were Right On....From the first picture during the day to the last pictures at twilight WOW....I still cannot believe the Clarity and Color....I was going to buy the Nikon D 3100 and sell my D70 , this lens saved me $550.00 and I can't say enough about the sharpness and contrast.......It's worth more then the MSRP

Great Lens

This lens works great! I wanted a fixed lens but I had never used one and didn't want to jump into an expensive lens before I knew if I liked using them. This lens makes my images extremely sharp, and really helps the depth of field. The lens works great in really low light situations as well. The price is great and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great Prime Lens for the money

I was in the market for a good prime lens but didn't want to spend too much for my first one so I decided to go with this one. At first, I was skeptical as it was cheap, not a AF-S lens, material seems light and cheap, and didn't seem very durable. It wasn't till I started using it and realized its potential. This is a great lens. Shoots very crisp images with a nice blur effect in the background which helps bring your attention to the subject of the picture. It helps bring out the atmosphere of the subject matter in your photos without losing much of the image and color. It's a great lens during events, especially in a low-light environment and also a great lens for portraits and landscape. With a wide range of F-stops from 1.8 to 22, you have a wide variety of aperture to choose from to adapt to your surroundings. I now mostly use this lens for events and portraits. The only con I have with this lens is that it's a AF lens and is not compatible with the new D3100/D5100, as well as the D3000 and D5000. I wouldn't recommend this to beginners who are using these new bodies since you have to manually focus your images. I use it on my D3100 and it takes several shots for you to get the focus right. It's also quite noisy when it auto-focuses on a compatible body such as the D90/D7000 and up. I would recommend the new 50mm 1.8G Lens for beginners since that is a AF-S lens and is very quiet when focusing. It's also compatible with all Nikon DSLRs. Other than those cons, this is a great lens for beginners and professionals alike. I would highly recommend you to pick this up since it's quite affordable and takes excellent pictures. All of my sample pictures were taken with a D3100 body.

Great lens!

This lens has an amazing quality of image. I've bought it by its price to use with a D5100, so I can't autofocus with it. Even in manual focus I can make some great pictures. It's perfect to close portraits creating a perfect bokeh effect with is largest apperture values....
