Space travel. Theft. T...

Space travel. Theft. Telling your Overlord tyrant of a father where to stuff it. Rebels, Overlord soldiers, Bounty Hunters and one hell of a cash reward for Tess Bailey, dead or alive (preferably alive). The show down at the end of the book promises to continue into the next book.

Original! Amazing!

I can honestly say I've never read a book like this one before. This is so sci-fi but with romance and written in such a way that I was totally absorbed into the story from the first page. There is plenty of adventure, drama and action as well as a wonderful chemistry between the hero and heroine. I worried what type of decision Shade was going to make and how Tess would respond to his actions. It was the perfect amount of angst to keep the romance part of the story moving even while Tess is leading a group of rebels and keeping some pretty deep secrets to herself. Tess is a strong, independent heroine with a deep drive to protect those that she considers family. I loved her character in every way possible. Shade was protective and alpha enough to keep an eye on her but smart enough to know she led her own life and he couldn't dictate to her. This is a lengthier book but it never felt bogged down or wordy. The secondary characters are awesome and the twists had me reading wide-eyed and transfixed. The steam factor didn't even register to me because it was all about Tess, Shade and their gang and the danger that hovered dangerously close to them. The ending is a cliffhanger but it has a happy for now quality to it even as the future for these characters is uncertain. And now the wait for book 2…

Evil is evil! [......

' "Evil is evil!" [... not] "a perspective".' Ok I'm totally sold on Nightchaser! The characters are feisty, heroic, damaged and easily identified with. A fast paced romantic space opera with Bouchet's particular brand of panache. I can well see why she claims Robin Hood and Star Wars as her muses, referring to "these characters and their epic struggle" as strong influences. I'm also seeing shades of Elizabeth Moon's Vatta series. Captain Tess Bailey and her crew, escapees from an horrendous prison are committed to righting wrongs against a harsh and intractable dictator, the conquering Overlord. With the opening sequence, Tess and crew find themselves in an unwinnable situation. And this is just the beginning! Tess' soliloquies on the place of novels in this totalitarian world are a window into Bouchet's soul. "Because novels stir feelings, wishes, and the heart," [Tess] said. "Not all ideas and thoughts need to be proven, or even can be, and the Overseer is only interested in-no, only allows-what can be measured and quantified and put in a neat little box." And again Tess' (Bouchet's) magical thoughts on "kindred spirits". "For some reason, it made [Tess] think of a huge web connecting everyone who fought the oppressive regime in whatever way they could, big or small. The image morphed into stars, bright spots of hope and courage winking all over the Dark-one giant constellation, spread out, but strong. Stronger than the Overseer thought." I'm in love with the enticing Shade Ganavan (drool!) who manages to both complicate and simplify his and Tess' situation. Shade himself is pulled between his own long term plans and his unexpected feelings for Tess. The chemistry between them goes nova! I'll also be fascinated to find out what the Big Guy's story is and where other characters will develop. Ahh! So many questions that only future parts of the series will reveal. I can hardly wait! I must say that I ende...

I must say that I ended up enjoying this book quite a bit. It did take me a while to really get into the story but once I did I had a lot of fun with it. I was really eager to read this book since I really liked her books from the Kingmaker Chronicles trilogy. This is the first book in a brand new series that blends science fiction with romance and I think it worked really well. Tess Bailey and her crew start out this story in a bit of trouble. They have a stolen lab attached to their ship and are about to be caught. They take a chance on a risky maneuver to escape and then need to put the pieces back together. Their ship needs a lot of work and they are wanted by the authorities. Tess runs into Shade who happens to have the skills to put her ship back together. I did like the characters in this story quite a bit. Tess was a bit of a mystery especially as the story started but I liked her more an more as we learned more about her past. She considers her crew to be her best friends but she has kept her past hidden from even them. Tess was smart, loyal, and kind, but unsure when it came to Shade. Shade has been through some things and has made some big mistakes. I must say that I liked him right away. He seemed incredibly confident and observant. He does have a pretty big conflict of interest to contend with and I did enjoy getting the chance to peer into his head as he tried to figure out what he wanted to do. I really did like Shade and Tess together even though it seemed to take a long time for things to start happening. I thought that they had great chemistry and their personalities seemed to mesh very nicely together. I really enjoyed the fact that they had some rather heartwarming scenes, some steamy scenes, some were filled with humor, and some with action. No matter what kind of scene they were in, it seemed that their characters just made it better because they were working together. I also really liked seeing the relationships that Tess had with her crew, who were really more like her family than anything. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys romance blended with some lighter science fiction. I think that this book is a solid first entry in what I expect will be an exciting series. I cannot wait to read more from Amanda Bouchet! I received a digital review copy of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via Edelweiss.

Nightchaser is the fir...

Nightchaser is the first book in a new series by Amanda Bouchet and I was drawn in immediately as the story started with action! Tess and her crew, fugitives from the law who took from the haves to give to the have-nots, were being hunted after their last heist had taken a bad turn. The plucky captain manages to get their ship docked for much needed repairs and while hiding out and deciding what their next move is Tess meets Shade, a man who seems to give moody a whole new meaning. I liked Tess, she was a spunky character who had a huge heart that kept her going into dangerous situations time and time again. Despite knowing the dangers, she continues to always do the right thing. I really liked that about her. I also thought that the Author developed a wonderful platonic relationship between Tess and her partner Jax. They had a history built upon difficult situations and I could feel that history between them but their relationship was clearly defined and convincing as a friendship. I am usually a huge fan of romance and alpha males, call it a guilty pleasure, but I just wasn't all that into what developed between Tess and Shade. Outside of sexual chemistry there was no real explanation for what one saw in the other. I also didn't understand just what it was about him that made Tess trust him so immediately. She was a wanted fugitive, why was she not more suspicious of him?! Everything he did seemed suspicious to me. I just had a hard time with Shade's character as a convincing romantic interest. Don't get me wrong, he was likable and swoony, but he just didn't feel right in the role to me. He felt more like he should have had a leading role in a contemporary romance not a science fiction action story. The time spent developing the romance between Shade and Tess felt quite stagnant and limited the excitement and action of the story. I wanted to feel the tension in the story. Much could have been done to give me a sense of impending danger but I never felt that way, which was surprising. Given the situation that Tess and her crew were in, I would have thought that they would have been more cautious but they really came across like they had very little cares beyond the servicing of the ship. Where was the dread that maybe someone wasn't fooled by their ruse and that they could be found out at any moment?! I wish that more time had been spent developing the other characters. There were a couple of bounty hunters who, if given a larger role, could have had been used to increase the tension for the crew over being discovered. There were also characters from Tess's and Shade's pasts included in this story that I would have like to know more about and could have been used to help convince me about what was developing between Shade and Tess. It was a missed opportunity. What I did love about Nightchaser was the action, when it was there, it was thrilling! There was a real sense of adventure mixed in with impending doom, there was no guarantees that anyone was making it out alive. I liked the setting, that there were villains worth despising, and that there was a good versus evil vibe. I also liked that Tess and her crew were motivated to make a difference and I want to continue with this series because the overarching plot was quite intriguing! This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Edelweiss+. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
