Looks Great But Lacks Quality Control And Support
by -
Qualifications: I’m 64. Over many years I’ve built lots of build-it-yourself (BIY) furniture, from full blown entertainment centers, to multi-piece office suites, to microwave carts. I’ve worked mostly with Sauder/O’Sullivan, or brands of similar or better quality. Sometimes I’ve purchased a BIY furniture brand that didn’t quite cut the mustard…this is one of those brands. I gave this Space Saver two ratings: 5-stars for the top (the cabinet); 0-stars (that’s ZERO) for the bottom (the legs). The average is 2.5-stars, but I did not give it the benefit of the doubt because of the overall quality of assembly parts (specifically part #17, cams and cam bolts). I admit, it looks very nice in the standing position (albeit it’s being held upright mostly with glued part #19 dowels, eight part #18 bolts, and my toilet’s tank). The phone number included in the assembly instructions, “for assistance or missing parts”, (201) 931-0883, is answered by the recording, “We’re sorry, your call cannot be connected as dialed…”. Good luck with requesting assistance or parts. PROS: --Looks good in online photos and in real life, very appealing contemporary design. --Easily accommodates the taller comfort height toilet tanks (clearance from floor to bottom of the front horizontal support beam is 41¼ inches). --The product is packed very well; all parts are adequately protected from damage. CONS: --Probably my biggest beef is with part #17, the cams and cam bolts. First the bolts...the bolts are threaded at one end and have a ball (for connecting to the cam hitch) at the other end. The threaded end screws into a plastic (sort of) nut that’s preinstalled into the Space Saver. Several of the plastic nuts (one in the cabinet, several in the legs) started turning inside their emplacements before the cam bolts were fully inserted (and trust me, I was not cross threading). Once the plastic nut starts turning with the bolt, it’s over. Why? The bolt must be fully inserted into the nut in order for the cam to turn completely and lock the parts solidly together. Trying to improvise methods to stop the plastic nut from turning, while screwing in the bolt, proved to be a nightmare of frustration. In addition, the cams in the bottom section (the legs) seemed to disintegrate (as if made from plastic) when I tried to lock the bolts. In all my years of dealing with cams and cam bolts in BIY furniture, I’ve NEVER experienced this phenomenon. As a result, the bottom section of my Space Saver is held to the horizontal support beams with glued (part #25) dowels (part #19). --99.9% of the assembly instructions are pictorial. Obviously, pieces must be oriented as pictured. However, in this case a picture may not be worth a thousand words. When I got to Step D, I had to undo parts of Step B and C in order to reorient part #14 (and this is not my first rodeo). --All the parts had nice clear identification label stickers. However, when the labels were removed, the glue more often than not stayed behind (on a few pieces the label and glue came off clean). I could have used my citrus glue remover solution but that leaves behind an oily residue that must also be cleaned off. After a few attempts at removing sticker glue, a time consuming effort at best, I decided to leave all glue residue that was not visible on the outside of the Space Saver. --There are four cams installed under the cabinet just above the exterior shelf. This area is darkened (I believe intentionally) in the online photo at walmart.com. These silver cams stick out like shiny nickels against the dark coffee finish of the Space Saver. Color coordinated covers for external cams have been provided for all BIY furniture I’ve ever assembled, except this piece. This speaks directly to product quality. I took a dark brown marker designed for BIY furniture touchup and colored the silver cams. It’s not perfect, but it helps. --There is no adjustment to the cabinet doors. As a result, my right door is slightly lower than my left door…guess the manufacturer felt this added character to the Space Saver. --The rear lower horizontal leg support beam has no height adjustment. It installs about seven to eight inches above the floor. If this is where your toilet bowl is closest to the back wall with less than three-quarter inch of space, improvising may be in order. (For instance, holes can be drilled higher up on the legs to accommodate the support beam.)
