The Best Just Got better
NBA 2K19 is a substantial improvement from last year! This years' version builds upon its strong game-play, fascinating presentation, and includes better graphics and important game-play refinements. Defensive improvements make dribble-drives more difficult and the emphasis on ball control encourages you to learn each players' style of play. There's a learning curve but once you get used to it, you realize it feels more realistic than ever. I love that player ratings are fine-tuned and shooting feels true to the players actual shot. The only thing I wish was a quick-game mode that skips through half-time. This game is a great holiday gift for any basketball fan and I couldn't be more excited to play online with friends. I wrote this review as part of a contest but I stayed true to my opinions and really do love playing NBA 2K19!
My daugther loved the game thanks
Another Good Year for 2k
I never give any video game 5 stars. There is no truly perfect game out there...especially with sports games. Technically, I'd give this a 4.5 star rating. The half star deduction is the requirement for Playstation Plus to play part of the game. I also hate in-game purchases. If I'm going to spend a chunk of money on the game, it should open the entire game up to me. but the MyCareer mode is really cool. I like working my way up the ranks, dealing with what the pros deal with like social media screw-ups, sponsors, agents, dealing with the press, etc.. Nice touch.
A few negatives though. I wasn't able to get the PS4 camera to map my own face (total failure on 2K's part). When you pick your player's speaking voice, there are only two options...and neither sound remotely like me (I'm the typical white dude!). So on-screen, when my character speaks, it is awkward to say the least. Loading times a also quite long, and the 2K TV feature is something I'd really like to turn off (weekly/monthly video segments of little value).
I haven't tried franchise mode yet, and I have only played the MyLeague option a little. There's quite a bit to do. If only they could get away from the in-game purchase model and just make me earn my strips as in the old days, that would make me happy (or at least turn off the option to view them).
I was pretty disappointed. My expectations may have been too high, I guess. I had the first installment of the game "NBA2K" a million years ago for the Dreamcast (back when you could buy NFL games other than the same Madden that has been released annually since 2009). I haven't owned an NBA 2K game in probably 5-ish years. Somehow, the thought of 2K19 taking me back to that first 2K purchase gave me some warm and fuzzies. Then I played it. First the good: there are a lot of game modes. It takes a lot of time to explore them all. The appearance of the game is pretty nice. Everything "flows" nicely, not a lot of "glitchy" lookin stuff goin on. The graphics are pretty realistic. The bad: the "cut scenes" in the story modes are kind of ridiculous. I felt like I was watching a several hours long movie with a 30 second break every now and again to play a basketball video game. On top of that... they're not very entertaining. They sound like they were written by 3rd graders, and portrayed by community theater actors. I gave them a shot, but ended up just skipping almost all of them after the first couple of hours of playing. I figured the GM/Franchise mode was just more up my alley. So I tried it. Navigating the menus has a clumsy feel. Not to mention it takes a bit of time to figure out what the features do. With all the tutorials in these games... you would think a brief explanation of menu items wouldn't be too much to ask. Finally... gameplay... you know... the reason we supposedly buy these things. Where to begin? I couldn't find a camera angle that I liked. I mean... seriously... it was like watching a movie with a massive production budget, but they hired some drunk off the corner to operate the camera. The in-game controls are nothing less than frustrating. And AI catch-up logic is oddly cheesy. Like NES era cheesy. If the defense isn't smothering you with their hands in your pockets, fear not- your teammates will just start standing in your way. They will run away from picks, ignore your call for the ball while open, and then randomly pass to you when you're triple covered... and blame you for the turnover, or just literally stand between you and the basket when you drive, like a defender should, lol. It's actually kind of funny. But next time I want to laugh, I'll buy a stand-up comedy blu-ray instead of a 2K video game. They're less expensive. Somehow there are a lot of 5-star reviews... so maybe I'm just gettin old.
Spend your money on something actually valuable.
Not too much was improved. Still a game you need to spend more than the already overpriced $60 to buy essentially the same game every year. Have you ever looked upon instant replay? When your player gets "Blocked" you actually are getting fouled extremely hard. The A.I.'s hand/arm will go through your players body which in reality is just physically impossible. Clipping is still an issue, obviously. I am glad to see that shooting has improved (slightly). I wouldn't let your little brother play this, it's a joke. I as a 20 year old that games regularly find many of this games' antics flustering and all around quite annoying. Dont even get me starting on my gm, my career, or etc. Exact same gimmick every year just a tad bit better graphics to warrant a new title and more yearly income.
