I honestly don't know how this thing gets as many good reviews as it does. Capacity was less than expected, but it was acceptable. The real problem was the smell and the fact it broke in less than 6 months. It might work for a little while for newborns, but for babies 6 months old or older the baking soda just didn't absorb the odor to any noticeable degree. In fact, I thought the odor was worse as every time we opened even a half full pail to put in a new diaper we got a blast of stink. Adding insult to injury, beyond being fairly ineffective at containing the odor, the latch on the lid somehow broke to where the pail would no longer close properly. Unfortunately, this occured 5 months after purchase, so it could no longer be returned. Fortunately, my youngest is just about ready to start potty training, so I hope to avoid getting another pail of any brand...though if I did get another, it would not be Arm & Hammer's diaper pail. I much preferred the Diaper Genie II.
