    • A. Yes. This is a modem and a wireless router. However, it only has one wired connection output. So, if you have multiple devices that need a wired connection, simply get a small wired router. About $15-$25. But, def worth it for this product.

Approx 300+ feet wireless indoors, 1300+/- feet outdoors. I have full bars throughout my house, and some signal well past the end of my 250 yard driveway.

But if you are getting new service from comcast they will try to tell you it wont work cause they want you to lease theirs. Make them install the modem with install disc and it will work. Motorola SBG901 Wireless modem

I've been extremely happy with this product and the online price was too good to pass up!! The setup was fairly easy, although the downloaded manual was not always helpful to me, a computer "non-techi". The modem's performance is great. I don't have any problems getting a strong signal anywhere in my bi-level home even though the modem is located at the end of the house. The wireless works for both of my computers and also my all-in-one wireless printer/copier/scanner.

Just what the Doctor ordered (so to say)

Just what the doctor ordered, this product is amazing. I've never set up any kind of network before, and had all four of my family's laptops and my Desk computer up and running in under two (2) hours. It can't possibly get any easier than this. Just hook your PC to the modem via the phone cable looking wire, install the provided cd software, (Follow what the install software step by step), unhook the network wire, reboot, and mine wireless worked. I have a 250 yard driveway, a metal single-wide trailer, and my signal is good for the driveway, and another 200 yards up the road before it drops out. Good job Motorola A+++++. P.S. Don't forget, you do have to subscribe to a cable internet service provider, I've got Comcast (bottom tier, $24.95/mo) and my speeds are unbelievable. Also, you can share a hook-up with your TV, but the splitter must be the first thing on the incoming line, then one side of the splitter to your modem only, and the other side to your TV/VCR/DVD or whatever. Your service provider CANNOT see your modem if the VCR etc comes between the line in and your modem.

Best value cable modem & wifi router in one
    10/20/2011

    Customer review by orbitguy

    5.0 stars 10/20/2011 by orbitguy
    by orbitguy

This modem works well if you are looking for a cable modem and a wireless router. It's all in one small unit, so it doesn't take up as much room as a separate modem and router. It's also cheaper if you buy it online and pick it up rather than buy it off the shelf in the store. The one problem I had during setup is that it's difficult to set up the wireless part if the computer you have it connected to doesn't have any wireless devices on it. The user-friendly software that comes with it won't allow you to continue with the wi-fi setup if it can't detect any wireless devices. Fortunately, I was able to go to the Motorola website and get step-by-step instructions on how to set up the secure wi-fi feature. It now works well.

Convenience at the sacrifice of download speed
    1/2/2011

    by Kazuya

The modem was convenient to combine the modem and wireless router's functions together, but when attempted to download heavy files (ie. movie files, etc), the download speed was painfully slow at 200kb/s, while the old motorolla was exceeding over 2000 kb/s. So I had to return it for better choices.

I purchased this same modem about 1 1/2 years ago but Comcast didn't support it at the time so I returned it. I just purchased it again at a bargain price of $78 (online price). This unit works great (as expected) and I am now able to save $7 per month by not having a leased modem. Plus, I got to retire my older router and free up an outlet.

    Reliable gateway
    9/4/2010

I purchased this to replace a Linsys WCG200 that I was daily having to reset because it was locking up. No surprises there as many other users have reported the same problems with it. The Linksys also has a problem with not passing VPN, even though there's an option to select for it. Again, many other customers have complained about the same problem. The Motorola SBG901 gateway performed reasonably well, not locking up once, as had the Linksys. The one exception to excellent performance is that the wireless signal is a little weak and doesn't propagate well through a large two story home. I've read other customer review complaints about this same issue. It should suit your needs fine if your home is small-medium sized. The firewall and other security options work well and are more sophisticated than other gateways I've tried. VPN passthrough also works as advertised. My one complaint is that the documentation is weak. There are multiple options available for which little to nothing is mentioned in the documentation about. I returned the SBG901 to my local Walmart, not because of the wireless performance, but because Motorola came out with the SBG6580, which is DOCSIS 3 compatible, supporting much higher cable speeds. My ISP just introduced DOCSIS 3 and I want to upgrade to it soon. Unfortunately, the wireless performance of the SBG6580 is no better. The SBG6580 is my third Motorola gateway, and the third with disappointing wireless performance. That's surprising, given that Motorola built it's reputation on radio communications. My solution is to turn off the wireless in the Motorola and rely on a Netgear wireless gateway I have hooked up to the Motorola. Attempting to return the SBG901 to my local Walmart store proved to be a royal pain, even though I did everything the walmart.com site instructed me to do (print out the return receipt, take the merchandise and receipt to a local Walmart store, etc.). The store, including the store manager, didn't have a clue how process a walmart.com return, and their store system didn't allow them to accept the return. Their store system wouldn't scan the barcode on the return receipt (the manager said they've routinely had the same problem with walmart.com returns, even though it's supposed to be a simple process). After multiple failed attempts they were very apologetic and gave me a refund anyway. Walmart.com needs to resolve that issue with their local stores.

It is what it is. I am NOT a technical OR computer person. I got this because the RENTED modem/router (Same Surfboard brand) from Comc*st was getting too expensive, AND my 8 month old learning to crawl & teething baby was chewing on the cord. Had to go Wireless!!!!!! Pros: Easy to install. I was able to manage this. Good price Cons: seems to disconnect once or twice an evening. I can sit on my couch/chair and watch the lights go out. A friend suggested I might have gotten the wrong model... something about b, g, or n I believe! Not sure the "letters" I quoted are correct... the NOT a techy person thing. Overall it does what I want it to do.

This modem stopped working after a couple of days. I suspect it's got such good reviews because it's quite difficult to find a replacement.. i.e.: a modem that has a built-in wireless network. For what it's worth, it was very easy to setup when it did work.

Pros - Easy Setup Cons - 1) It works perfectly fine for few hours and then suddenly it disconnects. It gets disconnected for 15-20 minutes and than it starts working normally. Sometimes after it reconnect, wired internet starts working early but wireless take more 10 minutes to connect. So frustrating. Coomcast guys checked everything and confirmed that the internet connections are fine, just modem is not proper. Even I have splitter and TV cable works fine but internet does not...Planing to buy another one and throwing away this junk. ( Possibly only my model is defective, but this is the frustration I have ) 2) No extra Ethernet port 3) Slow speed Don't take risk and try something else...
