I like Leviton 6602 and Lutron D-600R better

I like light dimmers, and my favorite design is the old school rotary dimmer with the round knob. For 3-way applications, push on/off is required. However, for single-pole dimmers, I like the rotate on/off version. I like rotate on/off better because starting off at the dimmest setting prevents being blinded by bright light at night, and it is faster to get the desired light level since twisting on and setting the brightness is done all with one quick motion. Unfortunately, the rotate on/off dimmers are hard to find. The big hardware stores in my area do not carry them. I tried 3 rotary dimmers to pick the one I like best. Important features to me include the following: 1. Feel of turning knob: The dimmer knob should have some friction so that it does not feel loose when turned. 2. On/off click: It should have a solid “click” when the knob turns to the on/off position. 3. Distance from knob to wall plate: The knob should be close to the wall plate. Push on/off dimmers must stick out to allow travel. They generally stick out about 5/16” (.31”). It is easier to distinguish a rotate on/off dimmer if it is close to the wall plate. 4. Mounting depth: Electric boxes tend to be full of inflexible wires, so reduced depth needed in the electric box is an advantage. 5. Price: An average house can have 5-10 dimmers, so the cost can add up. These are the 3 dimmers I tried. Leviton 6602 Feel of turning knob: Good On/off click: Excellent Distance from knob to wall plate: 2/32” (.06”) Depth needed for space in electric box: 7/8” (.88”) Indicator pointer on knob: No Comments: I recommend. This dimmer would be perfect if it had a little more turning friction. Lutron D-600R-WH (white) -IV (ivory) Feel of turning knob: Excellent On/off click: Excellent Distance from knob to wall plate: 3/32” (.09”) Depth needed for space in electric box: 1+3/8” (1.38”) Indicator pointer on knob: Yes Comments: I recommend. This dimmer would be perfect if it required a little less mounting depth. Morris 82711 (white) 82710 (ivory) Feel of turning knob: Very good On/off click: Good, but a little too much travel required for on/off click. Distance from knob to wall plate: 1/32” (.03”), actually a little too close; it could rub. Depth needed for space in electric box: 1+3/16" (1.19”) Indicator pointer on knob: Yes Comments: Not as good as the others due to the travel required for the on/off click, the closeness of the knob to the wall plate, the mounting depth required, and the higher price.
