I wasn't expecting much from yet another mini or flat antenna. I've tried most of them over the years at almost any price, & my old fashioned Rabbit Ears antenna beat them all by a lot. Although many channels moved to the UHF TV band with the change over to digital, in many areas, some channels still broadcast the old VHF TV band. Those flat & mini antennas are UHF only antennas that are not designed to pick up the VHF TV band. Some of them will pick up some VHF anyway, if you live close to the station & the signal is very strong. You need a larger dipole antenna with each pole extended at least 15-18 inches to pick up VHF TV signals good. A set of rabbit ears set in a V shape configuration seems to work best indoors in most locations. In my town. Channel 67, who carries 4 sub-channels with great old movies & shows, actually broadcasts on the VHF band on old channel 7. My rabbit ears were the only antenna that ever picked it up, until now. The reasonably priced Monoprice antenna actually picked up the weak VHF channel. But it took some playing around & moving around to find a sweet spot to pick it up & still pick up all the other channels. It was good on the stove, but can't leave it there. It was good next to a chimney, but that area is occupied by the rabbit ears, & interfered with it's reception. Some say a window is best - - not really. If you have a metal screen in the window, reception may be worse than a wall. But metal nails & other metal that may be in walls or siding, may make it worse than near a chimney. There's not much metal in most chimneys. I remembered my air conditioned back room's window is not fully blocked by a metal screen. Putting a longer cable on it, I ran it to the back room, & duct taped it on top of the air conditioner in the window. Perfect! It gets all the local channels back there... 30 of them with their sub-channels. I noticed if I move the cable around, I'd loose the VHF channel or one of the weaker UHF channels. I don't know if it's designed that way, or by accident, but the cable itself acts as an antenna too. Where you place the cable, & moving it around changes the reception. So find a spot where it works best, then move the cable around to get more channels or make it better. This has a light plastic screw-down base. If will not stand up by itself. So for indoor use, if you're not willing to screw it down to your furniture or ruin your modern vinyl or metal window sill, you have to tie, glue, or duct tape it to something to hold it up. Living on an upper floor of a converted mansion, I got no better reception placing it outside the window than I did inside. I duct taped it to the top of the AC unit & window for now. I may glue the base to a heavy magnet or rock later. It might do good as an attic antenna too if you can find a sweet spot up there. Just a foot or so this way or that way will make a difference in reception. Some pictures of this show it wall mounted. Can't do that. It's a vertical base for a window sill or attic beam. It does not function well on its side, only upright or upside down. The back window is closer to my other TV, so I'll be using it for that TV, & keeping the rabbit ears for the main TV.

I cut the cord on cable about 5 years ago, there was some separation anxiety for the first month but after that I really didn't miss it and I still don't. I went through 5 different antenna's before I settled on one that seemed to work alright. I still have trouble during storms or even on a blustery day I'll drop the signal. I was eager to try this antenna out and see if it might do a better job. I don't know if size matters when it comes to antennas but the Monoprice 4730 HD antenna is small, it's only about 8" long and 4" wide and it's really really lightweight. The picture shows that it has an L shaped bracket so you can attach it to a wall or pole, the bracket I received is straight so if I mounted it, it would have to mounted horizontally which doesn't seem like it would be as affective in that position. I tried to stand it up on the stand but it's so light weight it won't stand up on it's own, the weight of the cable pulls it down. and I'm not about to mount it to a piece of furniture. I live in an apartment so outside mounting isn't an option for me. I tried this antenna all over my living room, facing all different directions pointing against the wall and even in front of the window. There was not one position where I could get all of my TV stations in. I could put it in once position and get 5 stations and another position where I could get 6 stations and there was one station that would not come in no matter which way I pointed this antenna. It was really frustrating trying to set this up and use it. I couldn't even get it to lay in the right position because of the mounting bracket being on the back of the antenna. If they'd put the bracket on the bottom at least I'd have a flat surface to lay it on so maybe I could have gotten it to stay in 1 position. I just think the design of this antenna is really poor and the reception is not much better. If they had put some weight into it so it would be more stable I might not hate it so much. I tried it out for 3 days but in every scenario it performed much worse than my rectangular plate type antenna which is heavier and easy to place. I can't recommend this antenna, the performance is just too poor. Just to let you know, I live about 30 miles from the local TV broadcast towers and I don't live in the middle of the woods or anything.

In an effort to save money I came up with the brilliant idea of cancelling cable and watching TV with the beautiful use of antennas. I have three TV’s that have digital capabilities so picking up digital channels through the air waves, shouldn’t be a problem… or so I thought. This is supposed to be an antenna that can be used indoors and outdoors. I got this model because it gives you the option to mount it outside which I initially thought was pretty cool. It claims to be waterproof and suitable for harsh weather, and has hardware for mounting it on different surfaces. However, after fussing with this, I have made the decision to stick with cable and call it a day. The instructions were fairly easy to understand and connecting the cables was super smooth. In the room that I wanted to hook this one up in there’s only one window. I put it in different places all around this window. The most channels I received were 5 when I connected the antenna without using the AC adapter. The most channels I picked up were 21 using the AC adapter. Not too terrible, I guess. But, as I turned the channels to test their quality I also lost the channels. Maybe it was the wind, maybe it was because I moved it and was unable to find that sweet spot again. I found this to be incredibly frustrating. I’ve used basic antenna bunny ears in the past and have gotten similar but more reliable reception. Maybe it’s just my room. I don’t know. But, I’m sticking with cable. Yes, I could have mounted this outside of the window but I would have had to buy a longer cable cord (the one it comes with it is about 5-1/2 feet) and I just didn’t want to fuss with that at midnight. I’m sure this works but just not for me in this particular room. These seem like they might be a blessing to people who live in apartment complexes because you can connect it to your balcony or near a patio or window and not feel pressured to get cable because regular bunny ears won’t get good reception due to the cinderblock walls.

We recently moved to a rural town in Kansas, the Internet is controlled by the municipal. they only deliver DSL and it would cost us around $125-$165 a month for 12 mbps. Our only other option would be satellite tv or satellite Internet. So me and my wife decided to go with an antenna. I picked up a this outdoor flat antenna and mounted it about 15 feet above our roof line and it works great ! The antenna is amplified and we went from 3 channels with a indoor leafe antenna to 11 channels with this outdoor monoprice antenna. Which is really good for our area because after talking to our new neighbors even with the old school roof mount the average is three or four channels in our area. I really like the modern flat aero dynamic design of the antenna, here in the Kansas flat lands we get some crazy winds and storms that come through. and this antenna has already made it through the first storm. with the flat design wind will run around it rather that through it, like the older designs which are known for getting ripped apart around here. If you live in the flat lands I definitely recommend this design over the others.
