This is the story of legendary movie star Joan Crawford as she struggles for her career and battles the inner demons of her private life. This torment was manifested in her relationships with her adopted children Christina and Christopher. The public Crawford was a strong-willed glamorous object of admiration but Mommie Dearest reveals the private Crawford desperate to be a mother adopting her children when she was single and trying to survive in a devastating industry that swallows careers thoughtlessly. The terrifying descent into alcoholism and child abuse are graphically and unforgettably depicted in this film.

I bought this movie at the Walmart store--I bought 3 movies-Mommie Dearest was the best and worst of the three.I read the book years ago--I remember ladies and a few gentlemen arguing about whether or not Christina Crawford was telling the truth or was completely "EVIL!"--like her adopted mommie maybe??? I've read a couple books about Joan Crawford and it's no secret that she WAS publicity crazed--she believed "they" (her fans) made her famous and "they" could (also) kick her out the 'A' party.I would not be surprised if she adopted kid's for the cameos posing with orphans and nuns. The movie is a very chopped version of the book but I don't think anyone could actually film the book without doing a mini-series type of event. Everyone in Mommie Dearest overacts----if they were on stage people in the rafters could hear them. Faye Dunaway acts and looks like she's channeling the drunken spirit of Crawford's 'sharpie brows' and shoulder pads. The very first Christina (as a baby) is the best actress --she gurgled and drooled. But, Mommie Dearest is like that horrible cliche' no one wants to admit-I would never compare the movie to an accident-but it's the 'looky loo' syndrome. Ya just gotta watch! Joan does dozens of vile things the least of which include vodka tossing and raw meat recycling. For some reason (probably because the movie is 'seriously' stupid ) I didn't feel sorry for anyone! EXCEPT the tree, some cleaning products and the designer duds that were ripped, chopped and dropped in a rot gut rage -s. If anything I loved the fashion through (Hollywood) decades and beautiful sets--everything was over the top including some hats and tourniquet style ankle straps. The movie is all big musical style color--glorious. I'm glad I bought Mommie Dearest--it's unedited and by golly it should have been---edited. I'll watch it on Mother's Day if my kid's forget me--with a sterling silver flask and a fanciful hat! Thanks.
