My favorite wood putty
I am refinishing a pair of old previously painted exterior wood doors. Besides filling holes, I needed to replace the old caulk in the crevices of the panels. This is the only stainable wood filler that didn't crack horribly. It was also easy to apply extra and sand down easily because it dries soft and saw-dusty. In this case that's a very good thing. I tested several fillers and this is absolutely the...least bad! It's not perfect but definitely head and shoulders better than anything else in the category. I disguised the lighter color of the filler by using oil paint to paint wood grain over the spots and, where I could, letting the colored oil varnish settle extra thick on those places.

It was not stainable!
I used this product tonight and not only did it not accept the stain it completely repelled it. Now my stairs are left with white splotches everywhere that I applied the wood filler. I did sand the wood filler and wipe the step down before staining. It looks horrible!

I used Minwax Stainable Wood Filler to fill seams on pine. The filler was difficult to get into the seams and dose not absorb stain well at all.

NOT STAINABLE!!!

I bought this product a few days ago and used it on a hand made picnic table I was given when I was 3 yrs old, I am now 32 and have a young son who is going to use it and it's still in really great shape (they dont make things like they used too) but there were a few splinter spots, and natural knots in the wood that I sanded before buying the stain and weather protector. While at the store I seen this product and thought it would be good to maybe help hold the table together another 30 years. So I used it in a few spots and to my VERY unpleasant surprise, when I stained the table, it now looks worse then before, as you can see, the spots where i used the "stainable" wood filler did NOT stain. This product RUINED an amazing piece of hand made work!

Very upset nostalgic mother!

Hello, We are sorry to hear that you did not achieve satisfactory results from our Stainable Wood Filler. It accepts stain, though sometimes at a different rate from the surrounding wood. This is often due to the natural porosity, age, or moisture content of the wood. Please try these suggestions, based on lab tests for the Minwax Stainable Wood Filler, to get a closer match to the surrounding stained wood: 1.) Lightly sand filler before applying stain (no finer than 100 grit.) Over-sanding or using a finer grit tends to close pores. 2.) Stain as soon a possible after filler hardens, following label instructions for the stain. The longer the filler cures, the harder and less porous it will be, and therefore the less stain it will absorb. 3.) If the first coat of stain is not as dark as desired, in a sample area use a piece of 100-grit sandpaper and dampen the sandpaper with the stain you are using. Use this paper to wet sand the Stainable Wood Filler. I would recommend rubbing out the area with light pressure in the same direction as the wood grain. Increase your rubbing/sanding pressure as needed. You should notice that the combination of the stain and sandpaper is blending the Wood Filler compound with the surrounding stained wood. Here again, practice your technique in a test area or inconspicuous spot. 4.) If the spots are so small that the wet sanding technique is not practical (finish nail holes), you may have to use a topical stain, such as Minwax Gel Stain, in a matching color, and using an artist's brush, paint the stain lightly on the spots. Rather than wiping, allow the stain to dry on the surface, which may take up to 48 hours. If desired, to achieve more of a wood grain effect, 5 minutes after applying the stain, use a dry brush to drag through the stain in the direction of the wood grain, then let dry. These techniques will help blend the filler with the surrounding stained wood. . Horrible

Does not absorb stain as advertised! Looks worse than before! Very disappointing.

Not Stainable

I recently used this filler on my deck. After 20 minutes, I lightly sanded down with 60 grit sand paper. I then tried staining the spots, but had little success as they remained whiter than the surrounding wood. I have not yet tried the manufacturer's suggestion of wet-sanding with 100 grit paper. Hopefully that will make a difference. This product is disappointing to those of us who trusted the "stainable" claim made by the manufacturer.

NOT stainable!

Wish I would have read the reviews before I purchased this product (which I usually do?). Finishing my beautiful butcher block countertops, but had a few places to fill in. Filled with this 'stainable' wood filler by Minwax -and it has totally ruined my project. I even thoroughly sanded where the filler was applied. It will not accept any stain. Boo Minwax!!

Not stainable, but rather stain resistant

Working on a home bar with oak top and arm rails. The reason I bought this stuff was to fill a seam in between some oak ply panels and the seams where I cut the arm rests to the proper 67.5deg angles. Everything was just great. The bar top is perfect. All my cuts were true. Then I used this wood filler...... Now I have a beautifully stained bar top with a lighter (nearly unstained) seam right in the center of my "L" shaped bar top. Also, all the joints where the arm rail pcs meet are discolored as well. Very disappointing.

I have to fill seems/stain the foot rests which I made from oak as well. I think the way I'm going to handle this is two coats of stain, then wood filler, then stain the seams using a Q Tip. Hindsight being 20/20 (but not knowing of this issue) I should have taped off the surrounding wood so only the seams receive the wood filler and not the adjacent wood. But who would have thought... if something is called "stainable", it should accept stain, right?

This product was the one source of frustration on my entire bar build!

this wood filler SUCKS.

Heed the prior reviews..I wish I would have read them before I used this on my antique table I just refinished. It does sand easily, but who cares when it absolutely does NOT take stain. False advertising for sure. I use Minwax stains and they are pretty good, but this product will ruin your project. That you can count on.

repels stain

I agree with all the other negative reviews. The wood trim around my new door now has blotches where I filled in the nail holes and carefully followed sanding directions. I don't want the same standard response everyone else got. That just tells what I might have done differently to begin with. I (and, I presume, all these other unhappy customers) need specific advice going forward. Should I use a stripper to take off all layers of stain and the pre-conditioner, trying to get back to bare wood so I can start all over? Is there another suggestion?

Hello, We are sorry to hear that you are unsatisfied with our Stainable Wood Filler. In several of our responses to feedback regarding this product, we have provided in-depth application recommendations. To remove our product, sanding or a stain and seal remover would work best. 1. This is a wood filler, to be accurate, it is best used in direct contact with wood, any voids, holes should contain only the filler and full contact with wood throughout. Epoxy presents a problem when it comes to adherence and may eventually cause the filler to pop out.
