Highly recomended for the home canner,

Ive seen alot of negative reviews on these particular brand of jars, myself however, I love them for their style, durability, and most of all price. I have purchased 3 cases of these jars and despite a few flaws here n there as posted in one of my earlier comments, Ive had no problems at all. I was shocked to see that when I lost grip while lifting them out of the canner, the rack was tilted sideways w/the jars still on the rack but, despite this, not a single one of them cracked, and they all sealed. Im very pleased with these jars and will continue use of them for as long as their available, or as long as I can. **One advice tip that comes to mind to my fellow canners, always thoroughly inspect the jars prior to washing/using them. I always "pre-heat" them for an added test prior to adding any product in them.

Jars are a good value, but...

I have bought about a dozen cases of these jars for my canning needs. I DO NOT like the lids that come with them. I use a pressure canner and the lids bow up almost time. They do ok if you are not using a pressure canner. I give the lids to people to use for craft projects, they make great Christmas tree ornaments when you let the kids glue pictures on them or draw their own. I buy the high quality lids to replace the ones that come with these jars.

    Don't Buy These

As a first time canner, these are NOT the jars that you want to invest in or at all. Our local Walmart was out of Ball canning cars, so I settled on these jars. I liked the idea that they were cheaper, so I figured that was a plus to not getting the jars that I wanted in the first place. My grandma has been canning for 30+ years, and she guided me through the whole canning process. My finished product's lids would not seal at first. It took 10 or more hours until 9 out of 12 jars sealed and one of the 9 that did seal had a warped lid. My grandma did her own batch of 12 with Ball canning products and all of of her 12 sealed within 10 minutes. The next day, I bought Ball jars from a different store, and all of my jars sealed within 10 minutes. I was so disappointed in Mainstay's product, and I thought the problem was user error. That was not the case, because I've read all the other reviews here. Everyone had the same problem as me!

    Do Not Buy These Jars!

I have canned for over 35 years using two All American 930s as well as traditional water bath methods. I provide enough organically raised canned meats, vegetables, fruits, soups, pie fillings, etc for 2 families consumption over an entire year. I have had 2 cans lid failures in all of that time. I was in WalMart and noted these jars at a lower price and bought 6 cases to give them a try. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO UPSET! I filled one canner with 14 quarts of Polish Kapusta and another with non-acidified jalapenos. The lids buckled and failed on over 85% of my jars. I immediately went and bought some Ball jars and re-canned everything. Not a failure on any of these. However I now have 12 cans of mushy Kapusta (yes, it shrank on reworking AND darkened) and 13 cans of jalapeno "sauce". I will stick with my Ball and Kerr American made jars from now on. What a total waste of money!

    worked as exspected

We bought 6 cases last January for canning all different types of food, other than a couple of bent bands the jars sealed and are still sealed a year later. But I always inspected all parts of my jars and clean them and inspect them once again, so to only have a couple of bands bent, well I've had that same problem in the Ball and Kerr products as well. And my jars seem to always pop as I'm pulling them out of the canner or just as I am setting them on the table. But I also can mine outside with my propane burner cause I have a glass top stove. So for me they have always been a great investment and I will continue to use them. I hope this review helps and I hope that Walmart continues to sell them. Because if things keep going up in price because people want prefect product then cost wise it wont even be worth canning anymore, it would be just as cheap to buy it. Unless your doing it for prepping!

You get what you pay for.

I bought several cases of these jars and I'm not too impressed with the results. For starters, I like that these have a smooth surface. It makes it much easier to apply labels. It's also convenient to have the lids come in a separate package, making it much quicker to sterilize and fill the jars. However, there are several things I dislike. Many of the lids were bent and dinged, so I had to use replacement lids by Ball. Several of the jars didn't seal properly, forcing me to discard about a dozen jars of a very expensive sauce I had prepared. I have canned THOUSANDS of jars, so it's not a matter of inexperience. Tonight, one jar had some spillage and leaked right through the seams as I removed it from the pot. As a personal gripe, these jars are a little shorter and wider than their Ball counterparts, allowing only 18 jars to fit in my Presto pressure cooker rather than the 20 Ball jars I'm accustomed to boiling per batch. It may not seem like a big deal, but it's incredibly annoying having to wait an extra hour to boil 2 jars simply because they didn't fit with the rest of the batch. You can't beat the price for the Mainstays brand and if I didn't have another choice, I would use these jars again. However, going forward, given the choice, I'd rather spend the extra dollar on Ball, which has never failed me. Also, as an added bonus, they're made in the USA. ;)

    DO NOT PURCHASE!

Do not purchase this product! I purchased a box two days ago for my home canned salsa. I now have pints and pints of unsealed salsa that I will have to give away before it ruins. The jar lids buckled and did not seal correctly. I normally use Ball lids and rings, but Walmart did not have any in stock when I was there. I had a bad feeling about them when I bought them, but I had tomatoes that had to be canned. I should have known better! I have been using the same recipe for years and have never had a problem with the Ball lids. However, the Mainstays lids and rings are JUNK! Do not waste your money on this product. Anyone who cans at home knows how much time and energy is spend growing, harvesting, and preparing produce for canning. I do not recommend wasting the effort with these jars, lids, and rings. It's simply not worth it. Go with your gut and buy the good stuff (Ball).
The jars appear to be okay. But, I suggest you throw away the lids and rings immediately and don't bother using them at all!! I had my lids and rings in a pan of warm water and within about 20 minutes, they already had rust on them. Buy the Ball, Kerr or Better Homes and Gardens brand lids and rings and trash all Mainstay lids and rings!!.

    The lids are no good

I have canned veggies since I was a kid and I've never had problems untill we started using the Mainstays line of economicly friendly jars. We canned 14 quarts of green beans and only 5 sealed, removed the Mainstays lids and replaced with the Ball brand lids and they sealed right up. To me, a jar is a jar, but the lids is what counts. I wouldn't recomend anyone to use the lids that come with these jars due to the poor quality.

    lids don't seal

we like the jars because they are smooth and we can stick labels on them for craft shows but none of the lids sealed.
