    Find a better desk

I bought this desk a year ago, and it came with blemishes on the top. Additionally, the door to the top part didn't line up. I sent in pictures of the three bad things about this desk, and I received a whopping $5 back from Walmart. I moved with the desk three months after purchasing it, and it fell completely apart. Too late to return anything, so it was money thrown away.

You get what you pay for.

So the first thing I want to establish with this desk is that no one out there is giving out good deals just from the bottom of their hearts, and this desk is a perfect example of that. I mistakenly bought this desk assuming that a good solid desk wasn't all that expensive, and that I just hadn't found a good deal yet. I know now this wasn't true. See, this desk is a nice LOOKING desk. Especially for the price. You're paying $100 ($90 when I bought it) for a good amount of space, good looking finish, L-shaped desk. What you aren't getting is structure, which I now know. The upper shelves hold no more than ten pounds of weight each, which is written specifically in the manual. The desk itself holds 100lbs, which is decent, but still not strong. The keyboard tray says it holds 30, however this isn't necessarily true if you ask me. My keyboard tray had nothing on it but my keyboard. Nothing at all. And it collapsed and fell to the ground on the first day without me even using it. As you can see in the attached photos, the weight on the keyboard tray pulled holes through the wood, and thus caused the keyboard and tray to collapse to the ground. Not only this, but a screw meant to support the tray also went through the wood of the desk. That's because the wood is not a solid strong wood. This also explains why much of the desk shelves cannot support high amounts of weight. Obviously after having my keyboard crash to the ground, I was upset and angry and felt as though I'd been cheated. I paid $90 for this?! But the issue is that $90, and a $90 desk are two very different things. The reason other desks of this one's likeness are so much higher priced is because this desk is not meant to be an incredibly strong and good deal desk. It isn't perfect. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. The desk fills a niche market. It gives you something "good" (and I use that term in quotes for a reason) for a price that is affordable. And to do that, some quality had to be sacrificed. I am now using the desk exactly the same, just putting my keyboard on the desk instead of using the tray, and everything seems to be fine. So my closing statement to any of those considering buying this desk, think about what you want. If you value lower price more, then I think this desk is one of your better options. But if you're looking for something solid that'll actually serve you well, I think you need to opt for something more expensive. And in the long run, it'll likely be more worth it.
So I purchase this item at a local walmart because i needed something like this for graduate school. While assembling the item, one of the part broke. I, then, contacted the manufacteur and they were nice enough to send me another desk free of charge. As far as the item itself, i would rank it as a 10/10. It's exactly what i wanted.

    Just what I wanted

I absolutely loved it! Yes the material is not the best, but its still good enough for me. Putting it together was not what I expected it was really easy everything was labeled perfectly to make things easier. And it did yes I would recommend

    Decent for the price

This desk suits my needs well, but it has its flaws. I had read the review that stated the desk fell apart upon standing it upright and thought surely that won’t happen to me, but it did. Off I went to Home Depot for some brackets to make things better. Assembly instructions were great with all parts easily identifiable and the steps clear. However, it took me 5 hours (including trip to HD) to assemble alone. Cabinet door does not line up properly—good thing I’m quirky and think that adds character—and keyboard shelf doesn’t stay attached, but I wasn’t planning on using it anyway. For $89 I am very happy with this purchase despite a few issues.

    Great desk. Worth it

Great desk. Perfectly fits computer monitors and has plenty of room to work on. Only problem is the door, isn’t the best door and hard to put together so it doesn’t scrape.

Liked it so much, I bought TWO !

Nice looking L-Shaped desk. Sure it's not the most stable thing in the world but realize what you're buying, an L-shaped desk with hutch for less than one hundred dollars. It's all particle board construction and the assembly does take a few hours. The only thing I had to do was drill a hole in the top and buy a 3 dollar grommet for passing cables through the desktop surface. As for longevity, it will probably age pretty quickly. The desktop surface in particular scratches easily so minus one star for that. Otherwise good packaging, some minimal damage to the pieces but generally okay and hardware had the correct screw count on both desks so A+ for hardware.

    Great desk for the price

If your looking for a simple cheaper desk this is defiantly the desk for you. I got it in the rustic oak color and it arrived in a week (I did in store pickup it ended up being cheaper) It took me about two hours to put the whole thing together (by myself and, I am a female) So I defiantly think anyone can put it together. The manual is very straight forward and easy to follow all the pieces and hardware came numbered and lettered and it was in excellent condition. It looks just like the picture, and it does look very elegant for the price. I would recommend this to anyone!

I haven't actually purchased this. It looks like it would work but I am wondering if the side the hutch is on can be switched. It is on the wrong side for what I would need. I really don't want to buy it till I know I can make it work for the space. The information doesn't say anything about whether or not this can be accomplished or if it can be purchased in the opposite configuration.
Hello student, the Mainstays L-Shaped Desk with Hutch is intended to be assembled with the hutch as shown.
This is my second time purchasing this desk but now different color. Pros: Its affordable and looks great. Cons: The parts where the screw goes into the holes are easily breakable when moving the top of desk to the feet of the desk. So, be extra careful. Takes 2-4hours to assemble.
