Assembly takes a little know how: On the upper socket (3-way socket for ceiling lamp), you need to remove the knob, remove the plastic retainer that holds the shade, and remove the plastic retainer that holds the metal socket in place. Then screw the 3-way section onto the reading lamp section. Turn the upper section, not the reading lamp section, and make sure the upper 3-way socket does NOT turn as you assemble the two sections. If you don't do this, the wiring between the upper 3-way socket and the reading lamp will become twisted, putting extreme stress on the 3-way socket. (Instead of disassebling the socket so it can turn, you could turn the upper section in the opposite direction about 6 or 7 turns to twist the wiring. When the upper section is then screwed onto the reading lamp section, it would untwist the wiring.)
After you assemble those first two sections, you can put the upper 3-way socket and knob back together without any stress.
You need two pairs of pliers to tighten the sections. If you don't, the lamp will be wobbly. I used two small pieces of rubber hose, slit so they would slip over the pole sections. The rubber protected the pole sections from being scratched by the pliers.
The knob on the upper 3-way socket is a little difficult to turn. It is a small diameter metal rod, so it takes a firm grip to turn it. This would be a problem for some people. To make it easy to turn, I slipped a short piece of rubber hose on it.
The 3-way CFL bulb is much taller than an incandescent bulb. If you are more than 4 feet tall, you will see the top of the CFL bulb, which I don't like. Many floor lamps have this problem, so this is not a surprise.
The plastic shades look very nice, as if they were glass. Plastic shades are OK for CFL bulbs. I BELIEVE the heat from incandescent bulbs would eventually ruin the shades, especially on the reading lamp.
I give it 4 stars due to the unforeseen difficulty of assembly, the need for tools, and the difficulty of the small knob on the 3-way socket.
It looks nice, and is sturdy enough. It is well packaged, so it is unlikely to get damaged in shipping. I like it, and bought another one.
