Lodge Double Dutch -- Love It!
I've had my cast iron dutch for a few years now. Two pans in one -- love it! I use the lid ALL the time for just about everything; browning meats, cooking bacon, burgers, chicken, frying, it even fits a chicken pot pie using pre-made pie crusts perfectly. Though this comes pre-seasoned, I would still recommend re-seasoning the pot a few times or at least cooking some naturally greasy meats in it at first, such as hamburger or bacon. I made the mistake of preparing a pork tenderloin in a red wine sauce in my new dutch, first use. Bad idea! I wasn't thinking.... the acid from the wine stripped that pre-seasoned coating and my meal was ruined. I then had to re-season the pot a few times to repair it. So be careful with acids at first (wine, tomatoes, etc). Once you build up a better seasoned coating, those food items should no longer be a problem, however I now choose to cook acidic meals in an enameled pot instead. Same prep plan for the lid, do some burgers and bacon in it at first. After some uses, the surface smooths out and becomes non-stick (develops a patina). It is then that it performs beautifully. Make sure you know how to care for your cast iron, VERY important: hand wash, hot water, scrubby sponge is fine (or nylon scraper if necessary), no soaking, hand dry, place on the stove to thoroughly dry it (low-med heat), then oiled paper towel to rub on a new thin coat to the inside, leave on heat a few more mins, then turn off and leave it to cool. I do the oil step probably every third use, you'll notice it looking dry when it needs this. Overall, this product is a great price, an exceptional value, provides outstanding performance, and... it's made in the USA!

Not buying it from Walmart
I ordered the Oven three time from online Walmart. Each one had a hole on either the body or the skillet. I returned them. I do not know why they still sell their products with holes. I suggest that you buy this oven from other stores.

Bread Baking Magic

Perfect size for baking large, round, crusty country loaves. You preheat in the oven with the frying pan top on the bottom, and the dutch oven on the top. Carefully remove top, drop in the shaped loaf, score, and put the dutch oven bottom back on as a top. The steam from the loaf inside the pot creates a great oven spring. After 20 minutes, remove top to let the crust brown until loaf is done.

Great dutch oven for baking gluten-free bread!

Purchased this dutch oven because it is made in USA, is cast iron and is very reasonably priced as compared to the colorful enamel coated ones that currently sell for about $250.00. Purchased specifically for baking bread in the oven. Performed very well and I bake gluten-free breads which are the most challenging of all baking projects. Bread had nice crust and soft flexible texture. Best gluten-free bread I have ever eaten.

Great Dutch Oven with skillet lid

I have many enameled cast iron dutch ovens & cook exclusively in them or in Lodge cast iron. Cannot beat the taste, performance and peace of mind that chemicals are not leaching into your food. Very convenient to go from stove to oven or even the grill or campfire. A few years ago I was intimidated to use real cast iron. It's easy, lodge provides the directions, just follow them. Also satisfied with Wal Mart for fast shipping and products were packaged well to prevent damage.

None Better! Perfect in every way!

Cast Iron cooks everything much better, Period! and this Dutch Oven is no exception. I use it for everything. I deep fry in it, make stew and chili in it, boil potatoes and make rice in it, and to top it off, I use the lid as a fantastic no stick frying pan. I make pancakes, eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, and even steamed broccoli in it. You name it, you can cook it in this sweet Double Dutch Oven and Lid. It heats perfectly and makes food taste so much better. So even if your new to cast iron, you will love it. Keep it seasoned, use no soap, and you will have a set that will last forever. PS Use very little oil when re-seasoning your cast iron, it's the reason so many new users have problems. Put on, wipe off, heat 1 hr in oven at 350 degrees. Easy.

i love cast iron for cooking!!!

i especially like that the lid doubles as a skillet or baking dish!!!...i made chili in the pot and bacon+swiss cheese cornbread in the lid...one thing i learned from the food network channel >>> preheat the lid in the oven before adding cornbread mixture as it creates a more delicious crust !!!...also. care for cast iron properly and it will last for generations!!!

Great cooking tool for just about everything

I have only owned cast iron pans and prefer them over any other. Wanted a Dutch Oven for baking bread and cooking just about anything else. This pot has a lid that can be used as a frying pan which increases the utility dramatically. It comes pre-seasoned, but everyone STRONGLY suggests seasoning it before using as I have done. If you have never used cast iron cookware, you are missing out. They are INDESTRUCTIBLE! You can learn anything you need to know on the internet for recipes for stews, roasts, breads and just about anything you can conceive of wanting to cook in this pot.

Great choice-Great price

I had never had a cast iron pan before but found a no-knead bread recipe that needed a pan that could take a temp of 450 in the oven and recommended a cast iron pan. I was always worried that I wouldn't know how to pre-treat and/or wash the pan, afraid I would end up with a rusty bucket. How wrong I was. Lodge cast iron cookware comes pre-treated and ready to go. Lots of info is included on its care and storage. I chose this particular item for its versatility. The top is also a frying pan. Now I am making yummy, crusty bread. And the best part? Lodge items are MADE IN AMERICA.

Two in one pan love it!

I absolutely love my pans!! I get two for the price of one because the lid is a pan also!!They are preseasoned and easy to care for. This is the best product I have gotten in a long time! Seasoning them after every use is as easy as wiping them dry. This is a product I know I will have for a lifetime!!

LODGE Double Dutch Oven is great concept

Have used lid as skillet to cook hashbrowns with great results, did not stick & cleaning was easy. Plan to make artisan bread soon which is main reason I bought this pot/lid. It is quite heavy, but retains heat very well. I picked this up @ the store to save shipping costs & it arrived in good condition tho only in box from manufacturer. According to some reviews, handles were broken or pot was cracked, so I inspected before leaving pick up desk, all was in good condition. I did wash with hot water & oiled with spray before use. So far I am pleased with this purchase.

1. No
by PAULHENRI
2. No, you only season it when it's scratched up or when you've used soap in it and you stripped off the pre seasoning (the oil). If your pot is starting to rust or it doesn't have that sheen anymore, then you have to season it.
by SweetBoA22
3. Just wash in hot water, set back on stove top on medium heat, and let the water "cook off." Then either spray with cooking spay or drizzle some cooking oil in pan while the pan is warm and wipe excess with a paper towel. Store in a dry, airy place. Very easy once you get the hang of it. Cleaning is easy since virtually nonstick. I don't waste paper towels on drying, or blacken dish towels. Just let the stove dry it for a few minutes while doing something else--just don't forget it though and then touch it with bare hands!
by CookwareFiend
4. No - You need to clean it with hot water, dry and, when cool, coat with cooking oil. Instructions come with product.
by nicke
5. I only put a light coat of oil after every time I washed and dried it completely. Looks like it is OK.
by Spring2011
6. No, after you use it, you just clean it with hot water, and make sure it is perfectly dry. Then you wipe VERY LITTLE oil or butter or whatever you use, on it, and then WIPE OFF AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, then, if you have a lid, you do the same, and place a paper towel or dish towel between the two and store in a nice dry place. This keeps you from having to re-season it. Many doen't bother with the towel, but it does keep moisture off. if you need that.
by Mystore6325
7. No; this product comes pre-seasoned. Just make sure that you do the following before/after each use. ** Before each time cooking, prepare the cooking surface by wiping it down with vegetable oil ** After each time cooking, clean with a stiff brush under hot water with no soap and towel dry ** After it is dry and while still warm, wipe all surfaces down with oil ** Allow the oven to cool and then store in a cool dry place, do not store with the lid on top http://whatscookingamerica.net/Information/DutchOven/DutchOvenCooking.htm
by CampingDude8675309
8. No way thats a waste of time and energy. This is what I do. 1 Put some veg oil in a oil dispenser and set beside stove. 2 Wash with hot water and a rag. 3 Dry with towel. 4 Slash with oil take paper towel and rub in. 5 Store with lid off 'if lids on put paper towel in to get out moisture'. 6 No need to season it comes preseasoned from Lodge. Every time you cook you are seasoning it.
by WallysBestFriend
9. No, you 'may' re-season it when new but it's truly not necessary. I washed the new DO in hot water and wiped with a small amount of vegetable oil after drying it. After every use, wash in hot water, dry completely and wipe with a small amount of vegetable oil while still warm from washing. Store away with a paper towel inside until next time. Wipe again with fresh oil before beginning next use.
by JGinLSL
10. No. It comes pre seasoned. Keep it oiled after cleaning so it doesn't rust.
by APBT
11. No. Only re-season if it rusts, or food sticks way too much. Avoid really acidic foods. Avoid soap if you can. To be safe, you can heat it after cleaning, until the steam has escaped, and wipe with a paper towel with a little oil.
by onthelev
12. No. Just wash in hot water without dishwashing liquid and no more seasoning thereafter.

2. As with the rest of the Lodge Cast Iron Skillets and Dutch Ovens, there is a very shallow ring engraved all the way around the bottom, set in approximately 1" from the edge. The Lodge logo is also engraved in the center. The Dutch Oven sits flat and performs well on a glass top range. Just remember to pick it up when you move it as sliding it may scratch your stovetop.
