I bought this laptop about three years ago and it has served me well. In addition to basic uses like browsing the web, Microsoft Office and downloading music, I use it to run engineering software like Autodesk Inventor, Microstation, and Matlab, and it handled them all reasonably well. I have also done some casual gaming, and while it really struggles with newer, more demanding games, I am able to play older games with no problem and even some new games with the graphics turned down. The video and sound quality are pretty bad but I knew this was not a high-end gaming or media laptop going in. This is a practical, functional laptop suitable for school and basic day-to-day use, so as long as you set your expectations accordingly you'll be pretty pleased. To be honest I did a pretty terrible job taking care of it; I rarely ran any cleanup programs or scans, even dropped it a few times and everything held up. Only thing that broke was the keyboard but that was because I spilled something on it, so you can't blame Lenovo. Fortunately I was able to get a Bluetooth keyboard and that has worked perfectly. Basically it did everything it was supposed to do and I pushed it to its absolute limits. It is starting to slow down quite a bit now, but considering how cheap this is I wouldn't expect it to last much longer than it has. Basically you are getting what you pay for with no real surprises.

4 months ago, decided to buy a Good computer, as my friend suggested, and I trust him, man knows the thing, I choose to get a Lenovo laptop. So that's what I did, went to local Argos and get one. It look good at the start, I liked a whole idea about it - color, keyboard , screen , everything was brilliant until I started to notice that something isn't going as was expected. Eventually I end up with totally new from look, never even dropped or damaged computer which I can not switch ON! Screen just stuck on black! It's interesting how different are companies and how they choose to sent their products to shops even if they aren't at the best condition! It's important to say that my previous experience wasn't that bad . Bought a TOCHIBA companies laptop from the same shop and it was going like new for more than a 2 years... Well , thanks Lenovo ;)

I LOVE this computer! It took a little time to get used to a new keyboard, but I have. This computer loads pages quickly!

After more than a few weeks of shopping and comparing I am writing this review on the G580 that I finally decided on. This is my first laptop and I was interested in getting a strong, basic computer that would fill my needs as a student. I could not be more pleased. The speed, graphics, camera, size, and ease of use has been more then I expected. The purchasing experience was also very professional. I stressed so hard over this purchase and I can't tell ya'll how relieved I am that this product has actually delivered more then my expectations. The only drawback so far has been the battery life but I knew it wasn't great going in. It doesn't last any shorter then was advertised but since everything else is so much better then I expected the battery life just stands out. This is a great computer so far and I highly recommend it.

I bought this laptop in 2011. Its overall performance is really excellent. Very limited shortcut keys. No hardware problems. Nice keyboard, enjoys typing on it. Drawbacks: 1. Very poor casing. Screen lid is not so tight and it waves just for fan speed. Not so tight when closing. Even after closing the lid it easily moves. 2. Very delicate casing. Screw holders will break easily. The plastic mesh near the cpu exhaust broke first within a year I bought the laptop. This drawback is common in this model laptop. I have seen 4 of my friends having the same laptop had the same problem. 3. When a charger was connected to the laptop (if there is no earthing), I sense power on the metal palm rest. Still Lenovo, a computer giant, has to improve their casing. To the budget and performance this is preferable.

Marketing Junkware and Windows 8 -- A Big No-NoD
12/4/2012

Customer review by Lindy

I bought this laptop to use for business and to be productive. Windows 8 is a disaster. Microsoft, Lenovo and every other vendor had put their marketing junkware on the computer. I restored it to its original state and uninstalled some of the junkware, but it is very difficult to tell what you have. If you are on the left side of the screen, then something pops out at you on the right side. I bought a Windows 8 book but things as simple as changing the date and time are impossible. When I do a search on either date or time, Windows 8 says no match. So much for search. So many of these marketing junkware programs do not provide an option for you to opt-out. I bought a Lenovo computer because I had used one several years ago and been impressed. Lenovo has disappointed me with all of the marketing junkware that they have allowed to be put on this computer. The amazing thing is that my 4 GB Ram G580 runs slower than my 1 GB Dell Latitude D800 with Windows 7 Ultimate. Right now, I am very frustrated and disappointed in both Lenovo and Windows 8. Lenovo should have sold this with Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate. Windows 8 is not ready for prime time, if your focus is doing productive work.

Bad Hard drive

I bought this laptop for my girlfriend's son. Right out the box, it seem to take a very long time to boot. This got progressively worse over time. After about a year, it stopped booting altogether. I used the Recovery disks but after booting once, it hung again. Eventually I figured out that it was bad hard drive. After putting a new one in, the laptop finally boots as quickly as it should. I'm fairly certain that the hard drive was faulty from the start. Other issues that I've encountered are the power management software telling me that the battery is not a genuine Lenovo even though it's the battery that came with the laptop. Now that the hard drive has been replaced and some of the bloatware removed, the laptop is working much better although I really don't like the touchpad.

Pros: Price (bought some place else, but still, this laptop has a good price). Everything works in Linux Ubuntu 12.04.2. You can even install it with the UEFI secure boot BIOS option on (in other distros you may not). Other distros may need two extra drivers, the wl broadcom driver and the alx atheros driver. Ubuntu gives you the option to install the wl driver automatically after installation, the alx driver gets installed automatically during installation. Cons: Windows 8. In W8 the pad has a mind of its own. No led light for the num lock, and the other indicators for power, capslk, and batt are in a bad location instead of being right in the upper part of the keyboard/laptop, plenty of space there. Screen is so-so, not the best, but for the price everything is OK.

I wanted to love this laptop, it was a great deal for its specs. But there were several performance issues that couldn't be overlooked, and I didn't know if it was an issue with Windows 8 or the laptop itself, so I ended up returning it. The Adobe flash plug-in crashed anytime I opened up a YouTube video. Tried to update flash player, but the installer would never open. Trying to adjust Norton antivirus settings proved just as futile. Firefox kept freezing 2-3 minutes at a time. I checked the CPU usage, but the computer never even hit 30%. Even something simple like Minecraft would take about 15 minutes to open. Lastly, I don't care for Windows 8 and their weird app system. If Lenovo sold this same laptop with the option for Windows 7, I would get it in an instant.

i had just bought this PC about a little more than 2-3 weeks ago and it was working fine and then the store warranty passed and it was fine.... until the screen broke. the screen is extremely fragile and poorly designed because it broke from a simple single earphone being placed down onto its key bored (i was listening to Pandora) and being closed (i take care of my stuff and close my screens lightly too i don't slam them shut) so then... after coming back to it later.... i find the screen has a crack on it and i cant see about 3/4ths of the screen. Summary: no i would never recommend this to ANYONE especially someone with children or someone who wants a computer to last more than a week PS if you buy this computer buy a monitor because the screen will NOT last
