Solid Laptop, disappointed with battery

Customer review by Lenovo

4.0 stars 8/31/2012 by Lenovo
by Lenovo

Everything about this laptop is good - the wifi is strong, the keyboard is amazing, the display (upgraded) is perfectly fine, etc, except that the battery has thoroughly disappointed me. I was told by customer service, before purchasing this laptop, that on maximum battery life mode the 6 cell battery would last me about 9 hours. I was told that on energy saver mode it would be more like 7 hours. Instead, I have to charge my laptop every 3 or so hours on energy saver mode (with default setting, and while just on Word or web browsing!) - this is ridiculous. I am so upset with this because I'm a college student whose laptop will not last through her consecutive classes. 20% of the reason I bought this laptop was for the good battery life. I would recommend that people pay the extra money for the 9 cell. I wish that Lenovo would send me the 9 cell battery as an apology for lying to me about the length of the battery life. I'm not bashing the computer, it's great, but the 6 cell battery is sub-par.

Reliable, solid machine. A few downsides

I've been using the T400 series (T420) for about a year now. Overall, fantastic computer: you get what you pay for. A little on the expensive side, but nothing will break on a Lenovo. My previous Lenovo lasted me 5 years, and I got it used from another memeber of my lab, so I don't even know how long it was going for. My only complaint is the track pad. I don't like the "bumps"/"ridges" on the track pad. I much prefer a smooth surface. Not only is it not great on the fingers, this one doesn't have good sensitivity. I almost always carry a USB mouse with me for that reason. This isn't a crucial feature to me, so I still definitely recommend this computer (and this brand) to everyone. They make excellent products. I opted to upgrade to the 9-cell battery; great choice. You get really good battery life. The only downside is you have some battery sticking out the back of your computer. Still fits in the 14" sleeve no problem. Definitely worth it for me since I travel a lot and hate having to find a plug in.

Noisy fan for a Thinkpad

Customer review by jala

I have worked with many Thinkpads over the years, so in these comments I'll focus on what has improved and what has degraded. The baseline is mostly previous generation Thinkpad T and X models. The T430 has the modernizations I would expect and appreciate - processing speed, mini DisplayPort, etc. The current Intel hardware performs well. But I feel that Lenovo has degraded the T series in some ways with this last revision. First, I have never heard such a noisy fan on a real Thinkpad. What an unpleasant surprise. Even near idle it is too loud to tune out into the background. Second, this new keyboard from the Edge series is good and bad. It is good for typing words and letters. It is bad for anyone who uses top row function keys. The classic Thinkpad keyboard was so much better, in my opinion. Third, the touchpad surface is surprisingly abrasive. Maybe mine is from a bad batch, but I have never used a touchpad that roughed up my fingertips like this one. To summarize, this T430 is a bit of a disappointment.

Excellent value. Still the gold standard.

My T430s arrived a couple of days ago. I have been a ThinkPad fan for a long time, and although ThinkPads aren't what they once were, this laptop is still far superior to any of the junk you can find on the shelves at Best Buy or Costco. The build quality is excellent. The laptop feels solid and durable, but it is very light and wont be a problem to cart around. The screen is bright and clear. The first thing I did was wipe the drive and install Windows 8, and to my delight it runs like a dream. Windows 8 is extremely fast on my SSD drive, and required no additional drivers at all from Lenovo. The one thing I am still getting used to is the new keyboard. It is far superior to Apple's iToys or anything else out there, but I don't understand why Lenovo messed with perfection. The previous traditional ThinkPad keyboards were perfect. It also wouldn't kill Lenovo to update the design a little, but I suppose the current form factor works incredibly well, so like the keyboard, why mess with it? I strongly recommend the T430s.

Great Computer!

I got this computer for College and it is absolutely awesome! My Dad has used ThinkPad's since the early 2000's and they have always proved to be durable and long lasting, not to mention able to take a beating. It has easily handled all I could throw at it from graphics intensive games to long essay writing. Battery life is great with the 9 cell battery I can get between 6-9 hours of work done or 4-5 hours of gaming. the keyboard is good although former ThinkPad users will know that the old one was better. the ThinkLight is very useful when trying not to disturb your roommate or seat partner on an airplane. It gets a little warm after more than an hour or so of intense gaming but that is to be expected from any laptop. Highly recommend the upgrade to NVIDA Graphics and the 9 cell battery. If looking at a New ThinkPad T series either wait for the T450 or buy one of these excellent T430's.

All sorts of problems

Customer review by Lenovot430s

I've had all sorts of problems with Lenovo. I'm not a very picky buyer, and I usually don't spend time writing reviews (almost never). But I waited weeks to get this T430s and when I got it, so many things were wrong with it. They had the wrong video driver, the Windows OS had to be re-imaged. After doing lots of reading, I saw that a lot of people send their laptops back to Lenovo because of related issues. I think their process is very fragmented, so there's no good quality assurance. I've purchased cheaper laptops for friends and family, and all their laptops from different companies (even Dell!) never gave issues where I had to ship it back. And even though this is the most expensive laptop I've purchased for myself, it's been the most unreliable. If you decide to buy this product, write here what was your first major issue, and you'll be surprised how often this shows up.

Thinkpad T430 - Best In Class

Customer review by AxisofRAGE

The new Lenovo ThinkPad T430 improves upon the tried and true T420 in both design and feature enhancements. The kept the same basic form factor as the T420, but reinforced it with a carbon fiber chassis which provides additional strength and actually feels lighter than the T420. Pros: - Keyboard - Optional display card (NVIDIA) - Resolution (1600x900) - High build quality - Battery life - Matte display - Dolby v2 Audio Cons: - Weight The new keyboard design is a giant leap forward for the Lenovo lineup. Very responsive, nice spacing between the keys, and a soft resounding click make for the best keyboard available. Lenovo has successfully combined some of the best features from their consumer lineup into thier enterprise workhorse. From the Dolby sound to the nVidia Optimus graphics, the T430 is a definite winner and the industry standard for business laptops.

Great laptop, not so great keyboard

I have loved Lenovo products for years and am constantly excited to see the latest offerings. My employer's official platform is Lenovo, so I've used your machines for nearly all of my 13+ year career here. Our latest model is the T430S, from a performance standpoint, it's great. The only drawback I have found is the keyboard. I much prefer the keyboard from the T420S. I do not like the placement of the home, end, insert, delete, page up and down. I liked having the back and forward buttons around the arrows, the new top right corner is different from all of our previous models. T43, T60, T400, T410, T420, etc. It is not information technology focused as I often use page up/down, home insert and delete. At work I use a docking station with multiple monitors, with a regular keyboard. However, while away from work I often have to turn on the light to be able to see the keys since they are no longer isolated at the top right. The T420 had the extra large delete button, which was great, as I found the use of it to be much more frequent than insert. Now, there's no way to identify it without memorizing the new placement or looking.

Keyboard layout

Customer review by jdoe

This is another great T-series laptop. The keyboard is very nice -- worth the keyboard legend only available for Thinkpads. However, I do not think the new keyboard layout is better than the classic one. Having PgUP/PgDown key on the bottom is inconvenient, especially for a long time Thinkpad enthusiastic like me. You just need to stretch your finger to access page up/page down key for the classic layout. Now you have to move both your palm and finger together to access pgup/pgdown key. And I hope Lenovo considers adopting IPS panel for T-series lineups as well. IPS display is the best for crisp, clear font output. If you read pdf documents a lot or work on Word all the time, you are definitely willing to pay more $$$ for an IPS display option. So far it is only Apple that goes in this direction -- with a hefty price tag.

Originally ordered a Dell, but it had extremely poor battery life and would often overheat. I sent it back and found a refurbished T430s on the Lenovo outlet site. I run Ubuntu as my primary OS, but have it dual-booting with Windows 7. Great battery life ~5-6 hours if just surfing and/or word processing, ~3-4 hours if streaming a lot of music and/or video. Runs Ubuntu like a dream. Backlit keyboard is great. I don't use the trackpoint, but it doesn't get in the way at all. I actually have Ubuntu installed on the 16gb mSata SSD, but the home folder is on the regular hdd with Windows 7. As a result, bootup time in Ubuntu is ridiculously fast. Overall, the build quality is lives up to the Thinkpad T-series reputation, but as the "s" indicates, it's not as big and bulky as the regular T430.
