Day one review

Bought and have to exchange right away - didn't even make it out of the parking lot. It was experiencing odd, repetitive sounds. Wal Mart exchanged with no problem so I did not deduct ratings for that. Second unit seems to be working fine except two of the letter don't read as the correct letter. We put in the letter "S" and it thought it was a "N". We have other letter that work with this so it's not a huge issue for us. (We have the single letter unit too). I am going to replace the batteries to see if that helps though. The "Word Whammer" came with batteries installed so they might not be very fresh. One good feature is that our letter from our "fridge Phonics" work too. I was worried I might have to keep the letter seperated but luckily, that's not the case. The only true thing about it that I don't care for is all the extra talking and music. I wish it was a little more staight-to-the-point when it reads the letters/word that is put in it. I am sure it is this way to keep the attention of the child, but sometimes it just seems to drag on for a bit too long.

Leap Frog Word Whammer

I ordered two for my 2 1/2 year old twin grandsons. They love it, and you can already see that they are picking up on the phonics, recognition of letters, and they love the music. I had seen one of these at my Nephew's house. His wife raved about what their five year old had learned over the past few years with the toy. I feel that anything we can do to encourage children to read and learn will make live so much more fullfilling for them.

Very nice toy.

The next step after the single letter Leap Frog Phonics is the Word Whammer. The Whammer does a good job of pronouncing the words but sometimes will recognize some letter combinations as words that are not really words. One of the better learning toys out there.

leap frog fridge whammer

We have yet to enjoy the full scope of this product, but I believe it's because I bought it too soon for our three year old. She is bright, and can speak two languages, knows her colors, shapes, ABC's, counts correctly, etc. As a matter of fact, Leap Frog helped her to learn the short sounds for her letters. She is just not ready for this product right now, as she is too busy playing lately. It did not hold her attention. She didn't appear to get frustrated, but simply showed disinterest when we sat to play with it each time. For now, it's in the closet awaiting another time and another age.

Wonderful Classroom Addition

I bought this for my daughter's Kindergarten class. Her teacher does different stations where they can use the computer or go to the listening center. Another mom and I each bought the word whammer for a learning station. The teacher sets it up where 2 kids share one word whammer. It has been a wonderful addition to the classroom and the kids really enjoy it.

Will grow with your child

My child is only 2 so she can't speak well yet but is relatively familiar with her ABC's. She loves the "load a letter" mode as it sings the letter and the sounds it makes every time she loads a letter. The toy has "load a letter", "word builder", and "word hunt" mode. Right now, she enjoys the "word builder" mode more if someone plays with her as she hasn't been able to make any real words when she plays by herself, but she still enjoys playing by herself as it will still say the name of the letter as she puts it in the machine. These modes are progressively more complex so I know when she starts learning more words she will be able to enjoy and utilize the word builder and word hunt modes more effectively.

Great Teaching Tool

I purchased the Magnetic Alphabet Set for my three-year-old last year and he loved it. He enjoyed singing along with it, and promptly learned all of the letters and sounds. He received the Magnetic Word Builder for Christmas this year and we were very excited to find that the letters from his Alphabet Set work also. This way he is able to spell more words and he can identify the upper and lowercase letters without mistakes. It makes me so happy that he is able to do something productive and educational while I am working around the kitchen. I can ask him to spell a word, and he puts letters in the Word Builder until he gets it right. It is amazing to watch his three-year-old brain work.

Great toy

my son is 17 months old and right now is just enjoying the songs and lights and putting letters in and out of the slots. However, he loves playing with magnets on the fridge so it serves a couple of purposes. He will be able to grow with this product too as he learns letters and words, very happy with the product!

Letters not compatible with Fridge Phonics, Boo!

We had the single letter Fridge Phonics for a while and my kids loved it. They learned to identify UPPERCASE letters and their sounds. Now that they are older, we got the Word Builder which features lowercase letters, but I am SO disappointed to find out that the letters from our older Fridge Phonics are NOT compatible with it! With kids, lets face it, letters get lost, especially since there are so many. I was hoping that we could use both sets and have enough for the occasional misplaced letter, but no such luck! I'm especially not happy since it seems my unit came missing the letter "u". I'd return the whole unit, but the box got thrown away already. Other than that it seems to be a great toy for learning word families, rhyming words and helping them learn to spell, sound things out and read simple words. I just wish they'd consider their customers before they make a change like this-- I believe the older version of the Word Builder WAS compatible with my single letter Fridge Phonics. Guess I waited too long to buy this item! I do find that my children have a challenge when doing the word builder mode because the letters are usually scattered all over the floor or fridge. If they had some kind of case or board that could also hold the letters in order it would make storage and finding the right letter when needed much easier!

great product

I bought this product for my daughter when she was 18 months, and she has been able to identify all of her letters by the time she was 20 months old with this, and other means. I love this product because i can have my two year old take letters and spell words with it and she will know the word in five minutes. This toy is a great learning tool, i would not recomend any learning tool to be any sole means of education but if you ise it porperly, it is amazing. and fof the person whose toy conked out, you need to take it back and exchange it. mine owrks great, and so does all of the ones my friends own.
