Koolatron P27 Voyager cooler

This cooler is large and cools nicely. I tried another larger cooler, but the plug got too hot. This plug fits snugly in the car receptacle and does not overheat. For short trips I just use renewable blue ice and it stays cool, and for long trips plug it in to the car. I suggest loosely securing the wire to the vent grill to take the strain off the wire connection to the unit. Constant moving of the wire could eventually cause a failure.

basic but works

I had a Rubbermaid thermoelectric purchased in 1994 which finally failed. The Koolatron P27 replaces it. Some comparisons are interesting: 1. The P27 clearly has more effective insulation. Despite a much lower weight and thinner walls, the actual insulation is at least as effective, and probably slightly better. 2. The P27 actually fits in the trunk of my Audi A4 so I can plug it in the 12V outlet there. The Rubbermaid would not usefully fit. 3. The P27 is much handier--weighing perhaps half as much, and has a much smaller exterior size. 4. True, the P27 is not so long as the Rubbermaid, and has somewhat lower internal volume. A full rack of Baby Back Ribs barely fit diagonally in the P27. I did a couple of tests, just to find the limiting temperature difference the P27 could reach. Heating, and empty, it stabilized after about eight hours at a little over 173F. So in this case it reached almost exactly 100F higher than the room ambient. I conclude that it will easily keep already hot foods hot for transport (such as a dish going to a potluck). On the cooling side, it took about three hours or less to stabilize at 34F in a room which was slowly climbing from 68 through 71F. As with the heating, I conclude the P27 can keep cool things cool easily, with not much special care. For frozen things, I think it can greatly slow their rate of thawing, but in that use one should prechill it, and consider adding extra cold things (deeply frozen water ice, or "blue ice" or the like) if the actual payload is small. Parts such as the hinges, opening strap, and top lock seem cheaply made, but are effective in their task and not obviously weak. The claim to an interior clean cubic foot of available space it not quite true. An enclosure for the cooling mechanism intrudes on one side.

travel companion

We used this on a trip this Thanksgiving and it worked very well. Kept things cold as needed. It is somewhat noisy but it did the job and I am sure it will be used again soon

Very Good

it cools off whatever you put in it very quickly. It makes no noise. You can feel the warm air blowing out of it with the fan running and the lid closed. I showed it to my neighbor to goes to a lot of tail gate parties and he thought it was a good idea too.

Keeps on trucking

I am an OTR truck driver. The best and most durable cooler I have ever found. I had one identical to this in my truck for 5 years until I literally crushed it. I immediately reordered it.
