I chose the K'NEX Thrill Rides - Web Weaver Roller Coaster Building Set - 439 Pieces - Ages 9 and Up - Construction Educational Toy as my son, since he was little, has told us he wants to be an engineer. Honestly, he's nine now and I admit it's been hard to pull him away from the video games, so I wasn't sure what to expect. He's already abandoned his Legos. I have to say; my son was thrilled when the box arrived. He immediately got to work putting this together. I wasn't sure if he'd be able to do it alone, but I was still working at the time, so I had to leave him to his ministrations until I was finished working. Surprisingly, he finished before I did! It didn't take him long at all (approximately one and a half hour +/-) and he never needed any help. Obviously, this set does have small pieces, so depending on your child, he or she may need adult supervision and/or assistance. He said he rated it a “10/10” when I asked him, and noticed he played with it after completed a few times, but I admit, he's already abandoned it. So, I think these sets are great, I just don't know if they can hold their attention long.

Came with broken pieces
We have had other K'NEX sets, but this was the first thrill set we ever attempted to put together. It looked awesome on the box. It came with 439 pieces and no extras. That's right. Don't lose or break any because there are no extras! My 13 year old worked on this for 4 hours before realising the parts she needed next were broken. Now there is a half constructed monolith and it's parts littered across her bedroom floor. It is very disappointing. Also the directions were not very good.

Great for a tinkerer

My son is a huge fan of K'nex, but I am not so much. However, this Web Weaver Coaster was definitely one of the coolest options I've seen so far. I love that the track is glow in the dark, so they can see their handiwork in the dark. I also like that it's a self-propelled car, so it gives them a lot more options on how to build the track. They can do a horizontal or vertical design, and it will works ok.

I will preface this by saying that K'Nex are nothing like legos, and parents need to understand that K'nex pieces are harder to put together. You have to make sure everything is facing the right direction, you have to make absolutely sure you have the right piece, and if you make a mistake, going back to fix it can mean undoing a lot of work. My son is very patient and detailed, and has been into building toys for years. Other kids have not had the patience, so just be aware of that when buying this. This is not a toy they can put together quickly and start playing. It took my 10 year old about an hour to put it together on his own, but he's spent hours more "tweaking" the design to his liking.

Again, this is a fantastic toy if you have a patient child who likes to tinker.

Great

My son loves K'NEX and this is a rather large set.

Good quality that is typical of the brand.

The instructions can be downloaded and your child can either copy the design or make his or her own.

My husband did have to help with some of the assembly but that would be typical of such a large set.

Once it's put together the motor works to bring the cars onto the tracks and they then go down the tracks like a roller coaster does.

It does require two AA batteries, which are not included so you'll want to make sure you order some or have some on hand when this arrives.

Very interesting set.

Great for engineering/design interest development and shows children how gravity/momentum work.

This is definitely one of the more interesting sets we have.

K'NEX Thrill Rides - Web Weaver Roller Coaster

We had a fun time assembling it together. The storage bucket is nice, but the pieces barely take up any space in it. I guess that just means you have tons of extra room for storing additional kits!

The book of instructions is almost 100% visual when it comes to builds- great for kids. Building instructions range from simple to more complex. If you happen to lose the manual, the back of the book provides instructions for accessing the information online.

Overall, it's a really cool set! It's a great way to get kids building, creating, and imagining. Highly recommended! We had to use the step by step instructions and they were EXTREMELY helpful! Some times it was hard to attach the pieces to the main creature without knocking other parts off, but thankfully we were able to look back and see where the part we knocked off came from and get right back on track. The pieces fit together nice and snug so they don't come loose easily, so make sure to be careful snapping on new pieces...they can be a pain to get loose! We will be buying other sets soon. The only improvement I can think of is if the kit came in a box that could store the full size project so it could be stored safely with resealable bags to keep the parts in while we work on it! Especially when we had to put it together over several days since we are a busy crew!

My son and I had a great time putting this together and was very rewarding to see it work when it was completed!

Very Fun and Exciting!

My eleven year old loves doing crafts, puzzles, and just making things. So, I thought this K'Nex Web Weaver Roller Coaster building set would be right up her alley. She opened the box and started working on it. The Instruction manual does not have many words in it. There are more pictures with arrows pointing to things. Well, my daughter was able to build the structure of the coaster with no trouble. Then it was time to connect the coaster track. Well, that is when I had to get involved because things started getting a little bit confusing and frustrating for her. As my husband watched us work on the tracks that kept coming apart, he decided to step in and offer us some assistance. It was well needed too! He was able to see that some of the things we did were not quite right. After about an hour we had the tracks completely assembled. My daughter had charged the little air propelled car the night before. So, she put it on the tracks and OMG! It was so cool watching this car zoom around the structure we put together. It went so fast! My husband played with and tweaked the track for a while after my daughter and I had left…LOL. The tracks also glow in the dark, and the car is quite noisy when it is on. I think this would be a great toy for the right child. If your child likes to build things, like a lot of pieces to put together, and likes to troubleshoot problems this toy is for him or her!

Great...

When I was a kid and went to any theme or ride park I would look up at the roller coaster and say who built this thing. Now your child can build their own idea and have it run. It amazing how they developed science and construction in a toy. You have to use your mind to construct your own ride using the 439 pieces they provide in this set. Talk about having fun but, seeing their face as they have completed it is so wonderful. You will keep hearing about it everyday. You have fun while learning it's a great gift.

Fun and educational

When I 1st opened this and saw all the pieces and parts, the task of building it seemed quite daunting. I decided to give it a shot anyway. The instructions are extremely well made and detailed--but not in an overwhelming way. Each piece is a different color so it's easy to identify and follow along with the directions. Every level of construction is another step. The 1st step or 2, included studying the angle of the connector and making sure I didn't make a mistake. The steps move very smoothly along. I felt really comfortable and got quicker at putting it together. I only had to go back twice to readjust the angle of these blue pieces. It was pretty neat seeing how structures are reinforced with support beams that give strength and allow movement at the same time.

The car on this thing goes super duper fast! It's a mere blur of red in the picture. My kids love this thing. After playing with it for several days, part of the track popped off the connector, leaving a looser part of track. The car still gets around it for the most part, occasionally getting stuck and having to be nudged.

The car plugs in like a usb (to a wall block or pc) to charge. You have to pull off the front of the car to access the charging port.

I have very little spare time, but I fit this in my day and very much enjoyed putting this together. It took me about 2-3 hours but it went quickly.

These are awesome kits. However, putting together once is great, but not something I would enjoy doing again and again with the same kit. I told my kids, basically, once it's up, it's staying up. And if it gets torn apart or something, that'll be it.

These are fun, and interesting to build. They are functional and educational toys. You feel accomplished after putting it together. I docked 1 star due to the track not staying on securely; as well as the toy basically playing with itself. My kids enjoyed watching the car go speedily around and around, but they can't necessarily PLAY with this. They can turn the car off and manually move the car around, but have to be gentle. The building is fun, the observing is awesome, but there's not much else to do with this toy after that. It's really neat...just not something they can actually play with for long. Probably just my kids' ages. They are younger than the age group this is meant for.

Exceptional quality.

Didn't work great

Building the k'nex pieces wasn't so bad. You just have to be careful to make sure all the pieces are facing the correct direction. We had to pull a few apart. When it came time to build the roller coaster it got difficult...some of the tabs didn't snap correctly, some of the pieces were difficult to maneuver and my 10 year old ended up needing adult assistance. We finally got it out together but the car didn't work as expected. The fan was powerful and when the car made it around the track once it was really fast. After that it never made it a full loop around. It'd go for a second and then just shut off. We tried to see if it might be user error but it was pretty basic so we didn't see what we could be doing wrong. We did like that it charged by usb rather than battery. Just think it needs a better design.

Good building set with some room for improvement

This is a good build set with creative think and some degree of coordination. It would be a great project for a Sunday afternoon. The set came with detailed step-by-step instructions with illustrations. There were no missing pieces. It took an adult about 5 hours to complete. The electric car presumably took equal amount of time or less to charge (it was plugged in at the start and worked fine after the roll coaster was completed). I was pretty amazed at how sophisticated the roller coaster was designed how smooth the car can speed up and down the set.

That's said, I believe there are a few things that one should be cautious about. First, the car travels extremely fast through the track and does not have illumination by itself. However the tracks are fluorescent. Therefore, if you plan to test this set in a dark room, please ensure to put safety googles on. As when in the dark, the whereabouts of the car could not be easily identified. At the speeds it travels, one could easily be hurt if the car flies off the track (not that it happened to me, but just to be pre-cautionary). Secondly, also because of the speed of the car, it actually mobilizes the entire roller coaster, making it shake and wobble, and relocate itself quite a bit. It gets a bit better when on the carpet. This is not a potential safety concern though.
