When I saw this set, I thought it would be a wonderful family activity. My son is only three and a half, but he is obsessed with anything technological or mechanical. It extends beyond a casual interest in playing video games or messing with a toy car. As soon as he could walk, he went after the vacuum, the blender, the air purifier, the fan, the lamps, etc. He also went after the tools. He wanted to plug things in, push buttons...and disassemble everything. Despite having every imaginable toy within his age range, he still continues to "stalk" anything with a plug. We just had to get our third vacuum and second carpet cleaner. So, we have been looking for different toys to encourage his curiosity and hold his attention and deter him from "fixing" certain things. I was sent three K'Nex sets, for free through the Spark Reviewer Program. This set, which is for grades 5-9, the K-8 Construction Building Set, and the Kid K'Nex Transportation Building Set, which is intended for Pre-K to 1st grade. These sets are all wonderfully designed, and each set comes in a nice sturdy storage container. This set comes in a blue storage container that measures approximately 14" x 9" x 7". The tub contains 820 pieces. The set comes with three discs, "Computer Control Software", "Teacher's Guide & Building Instructions", and "SCE (Simulated Control Environments) & User's Guide". I was able to install the software disc onto my laptop in just a few minutes. A warning "failed to register" came up (apparently because I'm using a later version of Adobe Flash Player), but it still installed correctly. I did encounter an issue with the Teacher's Guide. My computer did not recognize the disc, so I couldn't open the files from it. I bypassed this issue by simply opening the disc on a different computer and transferring the files to a flash drive. I was then able to open the files without any further problems. The files are VERY detailed. Each project has several pages of step-by-step fully illustrated instructions. This set is clearly marked for ages "10+" and "CAUTION-ELECTRIC TOY". Obviously, this is not a toy for my son to use unsupervised. My son definitely is not old enough to use this toy. He can't resist pulling apart the structures while his dad and I build them. However, he is fascinated, and we get to spend quality family time even if we don't get to finish building all the sets. This is something he will have to grow into and it is fun even for adults, so he will get years and years of educational fun out of this. The price of this set is a bit intimidating, but the software is incredible, and the projects are very time consuming. I would imagine a teacher could use this set for months of activities. The pieces are also compatible with other K'Nex sets.

I guess this can be more of a group project, parents looking to further educate their kids at home, home school, classrooms... Computer operated not remote controlled. There is a difference. But once you jump into building it, there is a bazillion different combinations that a child, kid, preteen, teenager, or adult can come up with. Because lets face it, just because we're grown doesn't mean we don't find things like this completely cool right? Then once you agree on a design, and there are many possibilities, you load the programs and watch it come to life. How completely cool is that? This is one of the descriptions I found on this... he K'NEX Education Computer Control Set provides exciting, dynamic materials and lessons that will offer students a program of study that uses hands-on exploration in conjunction with an engaging inquiry-based approach to learning. Students will design and write programs to control five dynamic K'NEX models. Once the models are constructed and the programs are written, students will progress through a series of meaningful learning Tasks and Challenge Activities designed to guide their learning and challenge them to use critical thinking and problem solving skills. The Teacher's Guide outlines a series of 5 comprehensive lessons that introduce students to computer control technology, writing programs to operate models, and rigorous content in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Science process skills, the engineering design process, the core concepts of technology, science inquiry, and the role of invention and innovation in technology are emphasized throughout the lessons. The set comes complete with 699 K'NEX® parts, enough to build 5 computer controlled models, one at a time, a K'NEX Interface and software (with site license), motors, push button switches, reed switches, a buzzer, and LEDs. Grades 3 - 8. Building instructions and teacher's guide aligned to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math standards included. Packaged in a strong storage tub with Snap-on lid. STEM Education focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts taught through problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning and critical thinking. STEM Education requires students to be active participants in the learning. K'NEX® models offer hands-on learning opportunities that encourage scientific inquiry, investigation and experimentation. Our inquiry-based lessons challenge students as they build, investigate, problem solve, discuss, and evaluate scientific and design principles in action. Aligned to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math standards. Students learn and practice programming skills with K'NEX models on screen, Build fully functioning K'NEX models, design computer programs and use the K'NEX Computer Control Interface, Builds 9 models: three Cars, Garage, Toll Booth, Swing Bridge, Amusement Park Ride, Programmable Safe and Hockey Goalie, Compatible with interactive whiteboards and PCs. For grades 5 to 9

Within an hour my 10 year old son had learned to write simple computer programs to control the structures that came with the kit. He spent several days in a row building the models described and modifying them to his own liking. Then he moved on to building his own creations and writing programs to control them. The down side to this kit is that there are no printed instructions and finding the information on the disks can be tricky at first. There is also no information about using the digital input jacks that are part of the system.

This is a tough one to review. On one hand, the educational possibilities are limitless, but on the other hand, the interface is clunky, uses old operating systems and the programming directions are virtually non existent. The k'nex assembly directions for the first lesson in the book has you build a car. I did this. It was NOT the same car that the first lesson in the teacher's guide required. I had to spend another hour taking apart the car and reassembling it so the motors could attach. The directions were not clear on this. The computer program is for older operating systems. Also, this is NOT IOS compatible- if you have a MAC you are out of luck. I had to use an old XP based laptop. For a set that has so many possibilities it seems ridiculous that K'nex education is still selling people antiquated software on CD's instead of giving access to just download across multiple operating systems. The teachers' guides and assembly instructions are all on CD. Get ready to scroll and print PDF's for hours on your dime for ink and paper as colored ink is required to assemble these correctly. It's my opinion that at this price- one pre- printed color copy of each guide should be included. It is not. There was absolutely nothing that was easy or quick in getting this ready to learn from. That is the biggest drawback. In addition, after everything was installed, you still had to manually open folders to find the driver for the USB cable. It did not work without this but there were not directions to tell you that the driver would not install without manually doing it yourself. Luckily I am good at trouble shooting. Getting the lesson printed, the assembly directions printed, the drivers and software loaded and the car assembled took one full day. All of these drawbacks were frustrating HOWEVER after pushing through the lack of information and trouble shooting it myself once the set up was complete, my 9 year old was able to create his own programs and run the car and learn from the interface. Note that this is NOT remote controlled. There are many cables- power cord, USB and interface wires that attach. Although this is clunky and often times frustrating to use the student learns a lot from having to know where the wires are patching in. This kit is for an instructor that is at least moderately familiar with the ideas behind programming (no code is needed, but the basic knowledge of flow diagrams and Windows Based software troubleshooting is required). Check out the video to see what the computer screen looks like, the first car project with its interface, and the motion of the vehicle.

One of the wires was frayed upon opening the box. I covered it with electrical tape and then we finished building it. It worked very well and my 5 y/o son loves it.
