Granada Does It Right

The Granada Series is on for any serious collector. Well performed and written. Brett does the character more than justice. Very close to Sir Doyle's written articles....

A must for any true Sherlock Holmes Fan!

This Granada Series is just incredible. Jeremy Brett is THE best Sherlock Holmes I've yet to see on the screen. David Burke who plays Dr. Watson in the first Season is spot on as well. It threw me off a bit to see Edward Hardwicke take his place through the rest of the production but I grew to like him just as much. Jeremy Brett superbly brings Holmes to life with his "to-the-tee" acting as Sherlock Holmes is depicted in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings. His speech, laugh, gestures, even the way he sits in his chair with his knees drawn up to his chest are exactly as described in the actual stories. I've read that Jeremy Brett maintained a 77 page manual on Holmes' mannerisms during the production. He strove to be the best Sherlock Holmes, ever. And I think that you will agree that he perfectly did so. The gentlemen that play Doctor Watson excel at playing their roles as well. What makes this production so very special is that screen writer John Hawkesworth was meticulous at keeping things as close as possible to what was written by A.C. Doyle. Being a big fan of Doyle's works I would be so put off by the producers of earlier movies taking liberties with their "works". Like sometimes portraying Dr. Watson as an aloof "sidekick" and not the intelligent partner he was to Holmes in Doyle's stories. And the using of the stereotypical "Elementary my dear Watson" line which was never once spoken by Holmes in any of Doyle's stories. You will find none of that. Attention to detail and superb acting in a very convincing Victorian backdrop make this series a fine tribute to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works. The supporting actors, well chosen sites and era appropriate costumes and props convincingly bring to life 41 magnificent stories. If you are a true Sherlock Holmes fan this series is a must have. You will not be disappointed!

Excellent Rendition of Holmes

Jeremy Brett does an excellent job of capturing the flavor of Holmes as I read him in Doyles stories. While Basil Rathbones rendition is very good, he doesn't have the same raw personality that I feel Holmes reveals in the book.

Jeremy Brett

I saw these episodes years ago when they were on PBS. Brett was the best Holmes of all time. I didn't realize any of this series was still available until I happened to see it on the Walmart site. I immediately ordered it. It arrived on time and in great condition.
