I need to back up some files even though the hard drive from my computer is not dead yet.

    • A. As long as you have an internal IDE/PATA hard drive to put into this case, then yes, this serves the same purpose as a portable USB flash drive.

    • A. It works pretty much the same way. You can back up anything you want to it, even a system image in case of a disaster.

    • A. This isn't quite like a flash drive, which is very portable and has no moving parts. You'll need to install a 3.5" hard drive into this enclosure. You can insert a hard drive with much more storage space than available with flash drives, but this won't fit in your pocket. Functionally it's storage, just like a flash drive.

    • A. No, this is an enclosure for a hard drive. You would need to install an internal-type hard drive in this enclosure. For portability, I would recommend a flash drive. The Inland enclosure has a USB connector, but it just isn't as small or "pocket-friendly" as a flash drive.

I foolishly ordered an external HD enclosure without realizing that there was even a difference in how the HD connects. The SATA unit I bought has a single connector and does not connect, so unless there is another type...I assume the 10yr old IBM HD (out of an emachine XP tower) that I have, and has 2 connectors...one being power, will work in this unit.

    • A. This case fits only 3.5" IDE/PATA hard drives, which are common in older desktop computers. IDE or PATA (Parallel ATA) hard drives have a "40-pin" (actually 39 pins) connection along with a 4-pin power plug-in. SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives have two flat-type connections.

    • A. if it is a long 16 pin it is called a IDE, so yes this is the one you want.

    • A. This is made for the older IDE interface which has a power plug and a wide ribbon cable socket with a bunch of pins. It will work fine with the drive you describe.

    • A. SATA also has two connectors, one for power and one for data, but there are no visible pins on the drive like IDE has. This unit is for IDE drives only, the kind with the wide ribbon cable for data.

    • A. Yes, it should work. SATA is newer, the older harddrives are IDE. (I did the same thing you did)

    • A. You most likely have an IDE HD enclosure (like this one) and, as you discovered, an SATA HD will not interchange with the IDE drive.

I installed an old Western Digital Caviar IDE 80gig 7200rpm into the enclosure and it worked like a charm. No hang ups. First I transfered the old stuff I found on the old hard drive to my computer. Then I formatted the old hard drive to erase it. Then I transferred all my stuff from the computer onto the fresh hard drive. Backed up all of my info, Pictures and documents with no problem via the USB cable - So much fun when something goes right with gadgets!. Seems like a good deal seeing they only charged me 97 cents shipping!. Go get ya one !. They work!.

after struggling with another brand that had a bad power supply and then a defective USB interface .. as well as a 1 hour assembly time .. it was a real pleasure to find this product .. it went together in no time and was on the air in less than 2 minutes .. best of all it worked the first time .. the enclosure is aluminum and runs cool with vents at each end (unlike the other brand that claimed to be aluminum but was mostly plastic made to look like aluminum and no vents). the price was much lower than compairable products. my only small complaint is that the power supply takes up more room in the outlet than it should. no problem on most power strips .. data trasnfer was very fast and trouble free. i think i will get a few more of these for backups. inland has a nice affordable product here.

Excellent quality at a very nice price. Works as expected and includes the A/C adapter, USB cable and Driver Disk if you need Win98 SE drivers. This drive enclosure has a power switch to easily and safely power down the drive. All materials in construction are rugged and heavy duty. No skimping on it's construction. I am using this equipment with Win XP OS and it works flawlessly. Excellent buy! Thanks Walmart!

Not keen on reviewing things, but this product deserves some good publicity. my setup 40gb ibm deskstar 7200rpm windows xp Pros 1. aluminum case seems to keep unit cool nicely. 2. no fan, but decent venting on front and back. 3. snug fit ensures hdd doesn't rattle in unit. 4. nice push-button power swtich. 5. normal power plug, not the S-Video type. 6. compact and professional appearance. Cons 1. tight fit for the internal wiring. 2. tiny screws. 3. plastic tabs to screw the faceplate to the unit. The cons are more nits to pick than anything else. Installation was a little tougher than i expected due to the snug nature of the unit. Just massage the wires into the shape needed to fit and it will be ok. Some screws require a eyeglass screwdriver, but once installed, you shouldn't have to worry. I wouldn't recommend swapping hdd's in and out of this unit. get a toaster dock instead. the plastic face plates have plastic tabs that you screw into to hold the plate on the metal body. due to the snug nature of things i would have preferred metal tabs. not a big deal if you are not constantly taking it apart. BOTTOM LINE ---------------- This appears to be a solid little unit. a normal power plug is a huge plus, after having many problems with the pinned s-video plugs in the past. power button is in a good location and has great feel. nice fit and finish and once assembled looks very sharp and professional. the unit is great price and great value. i would buy another again as soon as i need another external hdd.

Product does what it says it will do. I transferred a hard drive from a dead computer to this hard drive enclosure. The transfer was pretty easy, much easier than I expected. Plugged it into a USB port & the computer recognized the drive. Total time, less than 30 minutes. Most time was taken in removing the drive from the computer case. The drive was removed from a Compaq desktop. Very happy with the product and price. Recommended.
