I purchashed this for my daughter and the Magic Chef for myself. The Igloo is a lot smaller with a smaller reservoir for both Ice and Water. The Igloo is a lot quiter than the Magic Chef and keeps up with her needs. It only has 2 different ice sizes. If I were to purchase another I would get the Magic Chef, even though it makes quit a bit of noise when running, I like the larger Ice bin and the larger water reservoir plus it makes 3 different size cubes. They both work great and I would recommend either. The Igloo has a lot smaller footprint and takes less space and I will probably get one for my motorhome this summer. Both seem to produce the same amount of ice, but if you have a large family and use a lot at a time, I would go with the Magic Chef. If space and noise are an issue then the Igloo. Hopes this review helps in your decision.

My husband and I are full time R/Vers. The fridge in the rig we own is small in comparison to fridges in homes. The freezer is very, very small. If you put ice trays in it you have very little room to freeze anything else. With the Igloo ice maker we can get all the ice we want in a short time and do not have to wait more than twelve minutes to have ice. I recommend this product to any one who likes ice in a hurry. We compared several other products but for the cost and the performance of the Igloo you cannot beat it.

I have had this ice maker for about a month now and am very pleased with it. When I read reviews on this product, one person made mention to be sure and read the directions about cleaning the machine before using it. I noticed that another mentioned that the ice had an odd taste. When I got the machine out of the box, it had a very distinct plastic smell. I cleaned the machine according to directions. AND, left the lid up and let everything air out over night before making ice. The plastic smell was gone the next morning and the ice tasted just fine. There are a lot of benefits to reading reviews and I appreciate the person who said to be sure to read the directions for first time use, and the other who mentioned the bad taste. Taking these two things into consideration, I put forth the effort necessary to have a good experience with my purchase.

If you have never had a portable ice maker, you need to understand that they are not refrigerated Once the ice is made and falls into the ice bucket, it starts to melt. The unit is insulated so the ice lasts for hours and what melts gets reused to make other ice cubes. Portable ice makers make ice best when the air temperature around the unit is cool, as in an air conditioned room. Outside in the sun, the ice will take longer to form and melt faster. It is also best if you use cold water rather instead of room temp. water. I usually use cold water, keep the ice bucket out of the unit and then allow the first few loads of ice to dump down into the water to help keep it cold. When the ice in the water is gone, I allow a few more loads to dump down into the water. My old ice maker, a different brand, had a small metal bar that would get cold when the ice bucket was full and the unit would stop making ice. After you dumped the ice out, you would have to keep your finger on the bar to warm it up before it would start making ice again. This unit has a light sensor. As soon as the ice is not blocking the sensor, the unit starts making ice. That's a really nice feature. I have not had this ice maker for very long, and in fact I bought two of them, but I had both of them making ice for several days in a row to test them out and they both did well.

    • A. Yes. I turn mine (in my office) off at night, and the ice melts back into the reservoir. I turn the machine on ~7:45am, and have enough ice for a drink by 8:15am. I leave the machine on all day, but once the tray is full of ice it stops making ice until that ice has melted and then it makes more again.

    • A. No filter. The water is poured in a reservoir that sits under the basket that the ice is dumped into. Since I want "clean" ice to put in my drinking water, I use spring water in the reservoir to make the ice. The reservoir holds a little less than a gallon of water -- about 3/4 or so of a gallon.
