A Beautiful and Uplifting Novel

How can a book that begins with a death be so uplifting? The novel opens with Maddy meddling in the lives of her daughter and husband from the great beyond. But she does it in a way that's not only engaging, but often touching and humorous. Her daughter, Eve, and her husband, Brady, must navigate the depths of their loss, while they try to stitch together why Maddy committed suicide. In bits and pieces the story of Maddy's life (as well as those of the rest of the family) come out. The novel is told from all three points of views, and each voice is distinct. The characters experience rage and despair, but even when they're acting out, I felt sympathy for them the entire time. As a mother myself, I could desperately feel Maddy's longing to make sure her family would be okay, that they could heal and come together. The ending is lovely and I won't say more about it, because all the threads of the novel tie together so nicely, and I don't want to give anything away. But be assured that though this book is all about a death, it was absolutely heartening.

Brilliant and unexpected

I loved many things about this book, but especially the pacing--a slow build to a truly climactic conclusion that I never saw coming. The author is able to get into the heads of such different people--a grieving teenaged girl, her grieving and deeply flawed father, a blind pre-teen--and to capture each uniquely and intricately. No one is a cookie cutter--not even the suburban moms who swoop in to support the teenager, who easily could have been caricatures. This novel took me deep into the lives and minds of its characters, revealing through the details of their ordinary life the signs of much deeper troubles and triumphs. And when I got to the end...well, it took me completely by surprise and flipped so much of what I'd been thinking all along. I Liked My Life and its rich characters stayed with me for weeks after reading--I missed them when it was over. A beautiful novel for our times.

Tremendous debut!

I have no patience for books that don't have me immediately hooked and desperate for more and I Liked My Life did not disappoint. I so easily related to each of the three main characters at different points throughout this beautifully written novel. I particularly enjoyed navigating the story through all three of their unique voices. Madeline, Brady and Eve are all such well developed and complex characters that you can't help but become attached to all of them. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book and the delicious ending was entirely worth the wait! I am already looking forward to reading more from this incredibly talented author.

Great Read!!

As a 21 year old college football player, who rarely reads a book cover to cover, I was blown away by how captivating "I Liked My Life" is. This novel really takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster through the lives of a broken family, something I was pleasantly suprised to experience. I look forward to more work from Abby Fabiaschi, as she expanded my reading boundiares with her great story "I Liked My Life".

One of the Best I've Read In A Long Time

Abby Fabiaschi's debut novel is uplifting, thought provoking, and laugh-out-loud funny. I felt connected to each character and pulled for the happiness of Brady, Rory, and Eve. What I appreciated most was how Fabiaschi successfully unveiled this story with grace and without predictable plot choices. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
