Hylo Brown & The Blue Ridge Mountain Boys: 20 Old-Time Favorites

Say No More

The combination of a smooth voice, boyish good looks, and a cool sense for making Texas-style honky tonk palatable (some might argue 'watered down') to contemporary country listeners has made Clay Walker a hitmaker since his self-titled debut album hit stores in 1993. From the point when his initial single, "What's It To You," hit No. 1, he's released several more successful records and charted enough times to merit a Greatest Hits collection of his very own. Now, with the release of Say No More close to a decade since his debut, his career appears to still have plenty of steam.

Musically, Walker's always played things on the safe side. He hails from the same home town (Beaumont, Texas) as George Jones, and while there is a traditional honky-tonk framework supporting much of his material, he also has a soft spot for clean-cut power-pop. Obviously, Walker's eyes are on the charts, which have certainly done him right over the years. So it's little surprise that his newest collection, Say No More, doesn't break any new ground.

That's not to say it's a disappointment. In fact, innocuous as some of the songs may be - the uptempo ditty "I Love It," the lively cover of the overplayed "La Bamba" - for the most part Say No More is actually rather enjoyable. "If You Ever Feel Like Lovin' Me Again" has a simple, gently rolling melody, the arrangement peppered with tasteful touches of fiddle, piano, and steel guitar. The spare, slow-paced "She's Easy to Hold" is surprisingly rich and thankfully free of the saccharine overtones marring so many contemporary ballads. And the swift-moving "Texas Swing," while it lacks the brilliant mania of the Texas Playboys or the Musical Brownies, is nonetheless lively and fun.

Walker's attempt at a working-man anthem, "Rough Around the Edges" is hardly true of his music on the whole, but it does contain an appealing, pared-down arrangement at its core. While that song's a blue-collar come-on, "Could I Ask You Not to Dance" is the flipside of the coin. In the latter, Walker's protagonist is in a familiar barroom, and his ex is about to dance with someone else - so he pleads with her to wait until he's gone. Sensible listeners might wonder why the poor sap is even there in the first place; still, there's conviction in his crackling voice.

It's a curiosity what Walker might truly achieve if he had a little more of Hank Williams' grit and grime on his clean white shirt - and if he was willing to take a few more chances with his music. Criticisms aside, Say No More shows Walker - along with fellow Beaumont native Mark Chesnutt - holding steady as one of Music Row's more substantial neo-traditional singers.
