Where's The Beef???

Flavor is decent, but there is hardly any beef in this can! Basically, you are getting an expensive can of gravy with only a few, very small pieces of beef included! There's not enough beef for 2 people & really not even enough beef for 1 person for a meal. It did satisfy my craving for some roast beef gravy over some instant mashed potatoes that I whipped up. I'll probably not buy this again though because I can buy a can or jar of beef gravy a lot cheaper by itself.

easy roast beef for one

A half can over buttered noodles, or your favorite rice, some veggies, and a quick roast beef meal for one. Not something I would eat every night, but great to have on hand when you don't want to cook a whole roast for that once in a while craving for beef and gravy

"Meef", a good staple for your bunker or shelter.

It is actually not terrible but it isn't something you'd want to eat that often. I'd say for camping or the zombie apocalypse but otherwise buy cheap beef and cook it 8 hours and you'll get something like this only without the taste of can and all the salt? I have to say if you put it over some mashed potatoes, it isn't bad at all, it reminds me of school lunch "Meef" with gravy from 1970's. Those were the good old days, no pesky laws on how much Salt, Fats or preservatives were in kids foods. It may have been horrible for you but at least it tasted pretty good. Those days are over pretty much, but this is a throwback to the saltier times. I had a kid named Jose from Dominican Republic in my class, he didn't speak English too well, and one day he mentioned to me that his favorite school lunch food was "meef" with potatoes. I always cracked up when I think about it. The "meef" they served in school tasted just like this! As soon as I opened the can and took a whiff, It brought me back to my school days, and also reminded me of my first dog "Joe Cool" who we fed Alpo Beef Chunks which has a similar smell when you open can. Don't worry, the smell goes away when you heat it.

Not the best, but FAR from the worst!

I was doubtful about trying this after reading the other reviews so I only bought one can. Heated in a saucepan and poured over some hearty bread. It was actually good. There were several large chunks of beef that I had to cut up because they were too large to be bite-sized. Maybe I got lucky because some reviews said there was no meat. Probably enough for 3 moderate servings. It was decent tasting (not the best roast beef I've ever eaten but far from the worst). However, I added salt, pepper and garlic powder. Have since ordered several more cans to put in my "disaster supplies". Won't mind rotating them out and eating the ones close to expiration. Pretty happy with my purchase.

Good but not Great- But Great Possible

This is a good product for camping, long term storage, boating, etc. where space and prep facilities are limited. We can't give partial stars, so I gave it a 4 star rating when a 3.75 star rate was more accurate. Here's my breakout evaluation of the product: 1) Taste: 4 Stars- Like a quality beef stew without the veggies. Meat is lean, flavorful, and cooked to an enjoyable tenderness. The brown gravy is good, but a little too pentiful and a little too salty. 2) Quanitity: 3 Stars- a little too much gravy and a little too little beef. However the imbalance is not outrageous. One can is a basic meal for a big man. If they literally added 1.5 additional ounces of beef, reducing gravy by a like amount this would be a 4 star rating. If they added 3 oz beef and reduced gravy by a like amount, I would give it 5 stars. I would rather pay an extra $.50 per can and be pleased with the beef quantity vs. feeling neutral on the perceived value transfer. 3) Healthfulness: 3.5 stars, noticeable lack of nitrate based preservatives which is really good. However the salt content of a whole can is 65% of USRDA- that is high for anyone with a blood pressure problem. The product has a very low fat content for both regular and saturated fat and no trans fat- and that is a winner. Cut salt content by 50% and this is a 4.5 star product for health, given that it is red meat based AND it would still taste great. 4) Gourmet Applications: 4 Stars- This product would be excellent with potatoes, served over noodles or even asparagus. Serving convenience is excellent, open the can heat it in the microwave and serve - I would add black pepper, onion, garlic powder, and even a bit of hot pepper to take the flaver to 4.5 stars. 5) I will put away a supply of this product for my pantry and if salt content is cut and beef quantity improves, that quantity would also increase substantially.
