Banana Youshimoto's depiction of the lives of Japanese youth has changed her country's literature and earned international acclaim. In her latest work, she delivers two tales of resonant grace, of young women coming to terms with change and heartbreak. Publishers Weekly,Like twins whose paths diverge dramatically, these two gentle stories share little beyond the mesmerizing voice of their creator. The surreal subject matter and dreamy narration of "Hardboiled" make it read rather like a bedtime story gone awry. When the young female narrator realizes that it's the anniversary of her lover's death, several curious events suddenly make sense: a stone from a creepy shrine that finds its way into her pocket; a fire at an udon shop where she'd just been eating; and a nighttime visitation by the ghost of a woman who committed suicide. "Harboiled" drags a bit, but "Hard Luck" is a pleasure, even if it's almost as downbeat as its predecessor. This time, a young female narrator is standing watch over her older sister, Kuni, whose brain is slowly dying after a cerebral hemorrhage. As their parents gradually lose hope for Kuni's recovery, the narrator makes her own peace by forging a bond with her sister's fianc?'s brother. In this gemlike story, Yoshimoto (Goodbye Tsugumi) takes a subtle, graceful look at the relationship between the sisters and the fault lines in this grieving family, elevating her little book from fine to downright moving. For me, this book is v...

For me, this book is very much similar to "Kitchen"--two separate novellas which are somehow related. They are both lightly written yet hit the reader strong. I love Yoshimoto's clear prose that show us characters who keep their emotions in check, and yet manage to transcend and redeem themselves, all the while serving as guides for our own liberation.

-Another set of novell...

-Another set of novellas from Yoshimoto. The first is about a young woman traveling in the mountains. She comes across and ominous shrine and is haunted by ghosts, memories and her past for the rest of the night. IT is the anniversary of the death of her former lover and she comes to terms with what the woman meant to her, how she has changed as a result and the idea of loss. The second story concerns a family dealing with the eventual death of a sister who is slowly losing brain function. The sister in particular is having a tough time dealing with imminent void left by her other half. She interacts with her sister's fiancés' brother, getting help from his quirkiness in the tough time. She has to face the past and learn how to use it with out dwelling on sorrow. Once again Yoshimoto shows that she seems incapable of writing a full-length story with character development and plot. She is good at snapshots of people going through specific emotional needs, but I would like to see her branch out. Still these are problems that not too many Japanese women voice, so that is of token interest. The first story is a through away, lacking charm, wit or depth. Its biggest draw for some might be the lesbian relationship. The second story has it moments, and can strike a chord on the lost of a loved one. Slightly more power than most of her writing but still not her best work as it is punctuated by unnecessary characters (fiancé's brother). The publicity junket on the cover calls her a female Murakami...I don't think so.
