Hang Cool Teddy Bear

Hang Cool Teddy Bear may not be an explicit sequel to Bat Out of Hell -- not in its title or in its composition, with Meat Loaf once again parting ways with Jim Steinman, the architect of the Bat songs -- but it sure has enough bombast to trick anybody into thinking it's the fourth volume of Bat. It's not, of course: unlike those three career-defining records, Hang Cool Teddy Bear boasts an actual narrative -- a hazy, unformed tale of a wounded soldier -- instead of merely being conceptual, a difference that should give the album shape, particularly when married with Rob Cavallo's crisp, bright production. Cavallo corrects all the errors of the heavy-handed metallic Bat Out of Hell III -- its slick processed grind playing like an unfortunate artifact from the moussed and teased '80 Sunset Strip -- but the album still lacks the songs of Steinman. Instead, many other writers craft tributes to that over-the-top sound -- notably, Justin Hawkins, who made his bones with the parodic rock of the Darkness, American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, Bon Jovi & Desmond Child -- winding up with fist-pumping, Springsteen arena-anthems and guitar-laden rockers. Meat Loaf also gets assistance in the studio by a true motley crew -- Steve Vai and Brian May double-team on guitar, Jack Black sings backing vocals, and House's Hugh Laurie pounds the piano. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

As a devoted Meat Loaf fan that has seen him try different styles before, I can say that this is definitely not one of his better pieces of work. If you're more fond of Meat Loaf's Trilogy albums rather than others like "Couldn't Have Said it Better" or "Welcome to the Neighborhood", then this album may not be for you. The songs by themselves aren't bad. They just don't really suit Meat Loaf's voice talents. However, unlike previous albums before "Hang Cool Teddy Bear", we can hear Meat Loaf doing something he's not done before: explicit swearing. I found this to be a big turn off. Overall, I was really disappointed by this album. I still am and will continue to be an avid fan of Meat Loaf, but this CD probably won't be seeing much play from my collection...

To fully appreciate what this album holds and offers you need imo to be prepared to put what he has done before to one side, not to forget them, but so as not to cloud your ability to open your mind and really listen. Many of the lyrics seem at first glance simple, but there is a wealth of meaning in them if you allow Meat to connect you with them. This is everything Meat can bring as an actor who sings, not simply performing a series of complex and cleverly worded lyrics, full of metaphor and simile that hits you in the eyes .. but all the depth and meaning you expect in a Meat Loaf album is there if you listen and let the emotions connect. And if you've not been a fan of Meat Loaf before? You should try this new album, which is 21st century rock and roll delivered with passion, amazing vocals, incredible guitar from Steve Vai and Brian May, and stupendous drumming from John Micelli. This is not an album with a series of tracks .. it's an epic show, a musical, with each song building the story. To lose one track, one note would be to weaken and lose the story and meaning. To me it is simply the best thing Meat has done. Not to be compared to any other album, because this is bigger than what we'd expect from a concept album. This is simply in a new class of its own. His finest hour (and a bit) .. so far! Leave behind the words so often used to describe Meat as a performer. Operatic It's not .. no, it's the pure and unfettered rock Meat has in his vision .. It's not bombast either .. nothing of pretension here, this is raw, but never rough, honesty. Treasure all your Meat albums .. but come prepared for a new adventure and a new thrill-ride! This is not only unfettered rock . it's unfettered Meat ... and the ride is amazing .. the adventure huge

Great Album, Truly Meat Loaf at his Best. Different from his old stuff, but without a doubt one of his best albums in terms of content. Do yourself a favor and pick up this record.
